F. H. Cowden, Antique Stoneware Canning Jug, Harrisburg, PA - 1881 - 1888
F. H. Cowden. Antique Stoneware Canning Jug, Harrisburg, PA- 1881- 1888 Nice stamped antique jug made by F. H. Cowden in Harrisburg. PA in the 1880's. It has an unusually large mouth, 2.25" wide, for use as a canning vessel. F. H. was the successor to his father. John W. Cowden's, stoneware business in Harrisburg, PA. The elder Cowden started his pottery business with Isaac J. Wilcox(Cowden& Wilcox) as the Civil War started in 1861. The son. F. H. Cowden, enlisted in company C, Two Hundred and First Pennsylvania volunteers in 1864, served one year, and was honorably discharged at war's end. When he returned, F. H. worked with his father and took the company over on the elder's death in 1872. From 1881 to 1888 he operated the business alone as F. H. Cowden. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL F. H. COWDEN JUG. F. H. Cowden was the ... morefifth generation of his line of descent in America. The original ancestor. Matthew Cowden, came from the north of Ireland and settled in Chester county, PA around 1730. They were likely of Scots-Irish ancestry and documents reveal Revolutionary War as well as Civil War involvement. His father laid out the city of Harrisburg with Alexander Hamilton(also Scots-Irish) in the 1850's. The stamped mark on the jug clearly says. F. H. Cowden, Harrisburg, PA" although the"H" is not clearly impressed. Measures 10 1/4" tall. Please see our feedback page for buyer comments. Payment Details: Payment Due: payment is required within three days of your purchase but we understand that there are circumstances when additional time is needed. If you are unable to pay within three days. Please contact us so we can make arrangements. If we have not heard from you within seven days of sale, the item will be re-listed. TF McDonough 1 gallon stoneware advertising jug Scranton Pa
I live in a Victorian house and found this jug in the basement. It was painted red but I noticed some of the paint was chipping away and letters were peeking out underneath. I stripped the paint from it and did research on it but I couldn't find anything other than it was a store in West Scranton PA. There are still tiny remnants of the paint stuck in the deeper pores. Pictures are included. The jug doesn't have any chips. It is two-toned from the firing process. There is a superficial crack on the handles and around the neck that I think also happened in the firing process. I believe this is a one gallon jug, it's 8 1/2" tall, 5 1/2 across approx and 18" in diameter around the thickest part. If you have any questions or require more photos please feel free to ask. Thanks Jen

Hawthorn was the site of the Hawthorn Pottery Company- one of the leading small industries of the Redbank Valley. Hawthorn Pottery got its start in 1894 when W.T. Putney and E.A. Hamilton purchased the land, buildings, and pottery-making equipment from George Alabaster. Alabaster was a well-known potter from nearby New Bethlehem, but little is recorded about his operations in Hawthorn. At the time, Hawthorn was known as West Milville. Sons of a Moon Township(now Center Township) farmer, in the town of Bridgewater. The exact location of their operation is not known at the present time, but we do know that they obtained their clay from a hillside near the confluence of Brady's Run and the Beaver River, around 1840. This date can be confirmed by a listing in the 1841 Bridgewater Business directory showing James and William L. Hamilton as potters. The Hamiltons produced utilitarian salt glazed stoneware in the form of jars, crocks, and jugs decorated with cobalt blue flowers, vines and lined embellishments in the typical German or tutonic tradition. in 1847. Russell purchased property in Boro Township. It was probably at this time that he began to produce stoneware marked, R.W. Russell(with and without"Beaver Pa. as his trademark. Many of the pieces produced by the Russell pottery were decorated with unusual leaf and flower designs sometimes coming from both sides of the piece and meeting in the center. The Russell pottery is shown on the map of Boro Township in the Caldwells Centennial Atlas of 1876. It was located near the confluence of Mudlick Cre
