Antique Stoneware: ca.1870 NY Beehive Jug w/ Cobalt, AO WHITTEMORE, Havana
A commanding 3Gal. Beehive Jug bearing an impressed. Cobalt-washed stamp that reads: A.O. WHITTEMORE, HAVANA, NY. This is the mark of Albert Whittemore, who operated a stoneware manufactory in Havana Village, just west of Ithaca 1863-1893; the area is now known as Montour Falls. Whittemore Beehives are quite scarce, and this one is very impressive. The brushed Cobalt Floral Is flanked by a pair of freehand"3's" The capacity is also impressed on the shoulder, just above the cobalt decoration. This is an early Whittemore Jug that dates to around 1870. The overall condition is excellent. There are some tight hairlines near the lower right side(see close-up) one travels about 3/4 into the base. There are also some typical imperfections created during manufacture(stack marks, glaze skips and drips, etc) The applied strap handle and ... morespout are nearly flawless- there is one tiny nick on the inside rim. This is an antique primitive beehive crock jug that belonged to my Mom. It appears to be very old but does not have any markings on the bottom. The handle is bent. But appears to be the original handle. There are a few spots where the glaze did not stick to the crock when it was glazed. There is a dark spot near the top of the jug. There are also a few chips around the top and bottom edges. The jug is about 10 1/2" tall and 25" around at the widest point. PayPal only please. Two Gallon Beehive Style Multi Colored Stoneware Jug
For your consideration is a two gallon stoneware jug. This jug is the beehive style with a slightly ovoid shape and the glaze has more than one color. This jug was made in such a way that part of the handle is above the opening. This jug has a maximum height of approximately 11 1/2" and the bottom is almost 9 3/8" in diameter. The yellows and browns are the different colors in the glaze. However the dark red was made by me where I colored glaze peeling, glaze flaking and other imperfections with a permanent felt tip marker; I can't criticize myself for the coloring, because it does look better. This jug has 0 cracks, however it does have a chip on the opening and many chips around the bottom. Please, carefully examine the pictures, as the pictures are part of the description. An exceptional 19thC. American Beehive Jug. Glazed in extra-dark(almost black) Albany Slip, ca.1860. Features an applied strap handle, very-desirable Bird's Beak Spout, and a single incised line around the shoulder. Unmarked, but likely a Southern piece for Molasses or Whiskey. This is a very nice example with beautiful, early form and proportion; 1Gal. capacity. Excellent overall condition. There are a few minor nicks on the spout, two glaze skips on the body(handle left) and a crescent-shape scar that occurred in the making(see close-up) Also, several drips and fingerprints near the base. Antique Beehive 8” Tall Stoneware Jug
This small handled jug(half gallon. Possibly) is in very good condition. It has a semi-glossy glaze that covers the side and 1” into the lip interior. Besides minor scuffing, its only from-use blemish is a crack on the lip. During manufacturing, some glaze has dripped to the bare ring at the bottom of the jug. The provenance of the jug cannot be determined as it has no markings. It has a handmade quality in the irregularity of the cylinder and glaze drips along base. This is a 19th to very early 20th CENTURY OVOID SALT GLAZE STONEWARE JUG with COBALT MOTIF. VERY LARGE VINTAGE STONEWARE JUG. VERY UNUSUAL TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL CORK(wood stopper) The JUG is called a“BEEHIVE” style and the motif on the front of the jug is supposed to be a bee. It is Pennsylvania-New York Stoneware. 1850-1880, but it could be from several makers. the piece is hand painted. Stoneware like that is fired to a VERY high temperature(about 2300 degrees F) and about 1720, American potters began producing a form of stoneware developed in many Europe centuries earlier-stoneware glazed with salt and decorated with cobalt blue with a Beautiful Symbol painted in Blue. Salt glazed stoneware like this was very common in the 19th-Century America and potters produced it all over the country, sometimes stamping it with their maker’s marks- ... morebut most of the time, they did not put on an actual name-like this one. I really don't deal with jugs a whole lot. But this one really caught my eye. It really has that beehive shape to it. Especially since the bottom narrows down just like the top does. Most times it is just the top. There are two things that I will mention about it and you can decide for yourself with the pictures. Towards the bottom below the handle is a small dime sized piece that is chipped off a little. It does not go through and is just on the surface. But is there just the same and needs to be mentioned. The other one is on the handle where the thumb is placed. It is a different color than the rest. I am not sure if this was made like this to give the thumb a not so smooth surface for gripping possibly. It looks to have been made like this from the factory because the color closest to the spout bleeds over onto the lighter colored part. Regardless. Large Brown Stoneware Beehive Moonshine Whiskey Storage Jug
Up for auction I have a nice old stoneware jug. I do not know if this is considered a 2 or three gallon jug. The jug is 13-1/4 inches tall. 9 inches across and weighs 10 pounds. There is one bad chip in the side, near the base as shown in the pictures, and there are 2 more I did not really get in the pictures but they are only a fifth of the size and the rest is just the minor roughage you would expect to see. The handle and spout are in good shape. The lighter colors you see around the spout and handle is where the jug was not fully glazed. There are some light spots near the base also. Vintage Brown Beehive 9.5" Stoneware Jug with Intact Handle & Cork
This is a vintage(or antique. Age unknown) beehive stoneware jug with an Albany Slip style glaze. The handle of the jug is still intact and it appears to have the original cork(see top view photo) or at least one with notable age to it. There are several larger chips on the lower portion of the jug(see side view photos) and other smaller chips as well. The jug measures 8" tall to the bottom of the handle and 8" across the bottom of the jug. It stands 9.5" to the top of the cork. We believe this to be a 1 gallon jug based on the dimensions. There are a couple of incised marks on the bottom but they do not appear to be lettering of any kind so the maker is unknown. My knowledge of this item is limited and I have described this piece to the best of my ability. Antique Hand-Made Ceramic Jug This is a very old hand'spun' piece of domestic pottery. There is nothing fancy about it at all. There are some inclusions in the pottery. Under the glaze but that is very common with the older, home'spun' pieces. They didn't make them to be pretty-they made them to be functional. Most likely was made by some small, local potter& then traded for goods or services. Or, it could've been made by the user. In other words-this was NEVER made to be an heirloom! This is old brown stoneware marked"A.O. Whittemore-Havana NY" a beehive shape jug. It is approx. 12.75" high and a max. 9.5" in diameter. It is kind of a light brown in color with a cobalt blue flower on the front. In overall very good condition with the only significant cracks being noted above. The base is flat and the top shows no chips. There's an old auction house stick I've left on.

Antique Salt Glazed Brown Beehive Jug Circa 1890's Recently acquired from an estate in the Finger Lakes Wine Region of Upstate New York. This original, lovely salt glazed brown jug would be an excellent addition to your collection. The stout beehive ceramic style is 6 1/4" tall with a diameter also 6 1/4" Signed in the scratch style of the days by"Fred S. Classey. a local grocer long before the days of prohibition, the rustic glazing technique is predominant in this piece. Please note all the pictures for the random surface and colorization common of salt-glazing. Leaving interesting markings, drips, and color variations. As you can see in the pictures there is normal pitting and markings but no major damage to a ceramic in very good condition at 100+ years old!
