Ag, dry goods, metals, timber and people came to and from Stockton by ship and boat via the San Joaquin Delta system from the San Francisco Bay in the 1800's. So it is certainly likely this piece could have made a long journey before arriving in Stockton. There were artisans in Stockton during the 1800's producing earthenware and glass goods. A good example of early pottery from these area may be found by seaching for"Stockton Art Pottery" online. Joseph Pech along with his sons W. J. and Frank established the Buckeye Pottery in Macomb in 1882. Pech. Born in Bohemia on June 15, 1827, apprenticed for 12 years as a potter in Vienna, Austria. Buckeye Pottery was located on Carroll Street. Near the railroad. At the peak of its production. The company employed 20 individuals. The clay came primarily from Macomb County. Wares were marketed to Illinois. Nebraska, Iowa, and other western states. In 1939. Haeger Company purchased Buckeye Pottery and used the pottery to manufacture Haeger floral artware. Offering great antique stoneware jug that has a nice cobalt blue stamp on the front indicating it was made by Buckeye Pottery Company located in Macomb. Illinois. The center says it is the Blue Ribbon Brand, and it is a 3 gallon size. The piece has a cream colored base and then a brown glazed ... moretop with an applied handle. It contains approximately 3/4 of a gallon of tap water. I do not know who made this jug or where this jug was made, but I'm 100% convinced it is old. The clay is a metallic color. From the surface, it is sitting on, to the rim is approximately 11" The arch of the handle is slightly above the rim. The bottom is 6 1/4" in diameter. This jug has 0 cracks, however around the bottom are some minor to insignificant chips. On the rim is a larger chip. EXTRA LARGE 3 GALLON OVOID JUG STONEWARE BLUE DECORATION ANTIQUE AS OFFERED
This large antique ovoid jug was acquired at a New Hampshire estate sale a short while ago. It is a beautiful jug with blue on it and these large specimens of ovoid shape are getting really hard to find. Unfortunately. This jug has received some abuse and there are cracks throughout and two small chips on the bottle mouth. Look carefully at the pictures to make sure these are defects that you can live with-still, this jug is very impressive. The cracks start at the top(two of them)one goes through the blue decoration and splits in two and then travel about. In the blue area, you can clearly see the number 3 stamped. There is also a weak name stamp but the only letters I can make out are" ANNGE. The backside crack runs alongside the handle and down and then crosses over under it. This all being said, the cracks are still quite tight but ... moreI would not be swinging it around by its handle-best to pick this up by its bottom. There is a chip on the bottom and as you can see there are felt circles to protect surfaces. There are several flaws in the glaze and a couple of kiln"bumps" all made in the jug's production. It measures about 15" tall. While I make every effort to give an accurate description. Up for sale is a wonderful Huge 3 Gallon Antique Stoneware Jug/ Crock. It measures 16 3/4" tall by 9 1/2" wide across the base and weighs 14lbs. This Jug does have a very thin hairline from the bottom edge to the brown section were it starts to taper up to the spout. It is a thin hairline and still holds fluids nicely. also there is a small chip to the right of the bottom hairline otherwise the condition is great. it has the big finger hole on the top but this jug would be a challenge to throw over your shoulder. Its huge! It would make a great decorating item, it has the number 3 with a flower on each side of the number but no makers name that I can find. Old Cobalt ? 3 Gallon Stoneware ? Beehive Salt Glaze ? Crock Jug
I know NOTHING about stoneware. In fact. I don't even know if it qualifies as stoneware, but here goes- 14 1/4 inches high with a 10 inch diameter bottom. There are no markings on the jug except the number 3(three) in blue and I assume that to be the volume of the jug- although the more I look at it, I'm thinking it could be the letter B. There is a definite crack in the finger handle and that is all there appears to be- doesn't look like it ever broke off- shows no sign of repair. It has been in our possession at least 40 years- it was purchased in Washington state(Spokane, if I remember correctly) but we have the place for sale and will be moving into a ground floor apartment with no outbuildings so it must go. Of particular interest is the brown"mottling" on the top and handle- we've never attempted to clean it ... moreso we have no idea if it will come off- original plug never been out. Decorated 3 Gallon Jug Stoneware A.J. Buttler New Brunswick NJ Antique 1860's
This auction is for a 3 gallon stoneware jug with salt glaze finish made by hand by the A.J. Buttler Manufacturer in New Brunswick. NJ, circa 1860, before the U.S. Civil War. The maker's mark imprint on the jug has a misspelling; it reads as follows: A.J, BUTTLER, MANUFACTERUR NEW-BRUNSWICK. NJ The maker's mark imprints are deep on the first and second lines but the third line is faded and doesn't appear to have been embossed well at all. This is a 3 gallon jug as evidenced by the large. Cobalt blue#3 won the front. There are also brushed cobalt blue"floral or leaf" designs along each side and below the 3, as well as around the front of the bottle's neck directly above the imprinted words. The jug is in excellent condition. There is a blob of blue glazing on the bottom design and I also noticed a tiny"hole" ... moredoesn't go all the way through) that looks as though it happened in the manufacturing process as there is cobalt blue glaze alongside it. There are also two smallish nicks toward the jug's bottom. Below the far left design. The color of the jug is primarily light brown. With a gradual deepening of the color towards the base. The jug itself weighs nearly 10 lbs and stands about 12" tall; it is 39" in diameter at the widest point and about 36" at the base. I will ship this out to the winning bidder via UPS ground. Rare Antique 1800's 3 Gallon Jug Dark Brown Salt Glazed Stoneware Wide Mouth!!
Rare Antique 1800's 3 Gallon Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug This is a rare opportunity to own a very old 3 Gallon salt glazed stoneware handled jug with a wide mouth in a very dark brown. I'm estimating 1800's. But it may be older-look at the pictures and judge for yourself. It has a primitive"3" near the top. No other marks. The top is slightly darker than the bottom. 14-1/2 inches high and has a 9-1/2" diameter. The mouth is almost 4" across. Condition: Very good given it's age. Handle is intact and solid. No chips around the mouth and only minor chips around the top edge of the body. The top has some lighter color in a very few small spots-may be paint drips or an old attempt to touch it up. Regardless, it only adds to the patina of the jug. The bottom has some damage as can be seen from the last 3 photos, ... morebut it appears to be age related. There is the start of a hairline crack near the bottom, but the jug appears to be solid and should be around for a very long time-see last photo. See high resolution photos for more! This is a great old jug and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's home! PA Pennsylvania 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug. Tobacco Spit Glaze 3 Gallon H.P.Co. Jug. Stands about 13.75 inches tall. Condition is fine, with two small 1/4 to 1/2 shallow chips in the bottom, top and handle are mint. As for the tobacco spit. Turkey splatter, whatever you want to call those marks: I'm no expert on these old jugs. And I can find no other example of this phenomenon on Hawthorn Pottery output. I bought this jug in a country auction in PA, so I have no provenance for it beyond that. A little suspicious, I took my knife to the edge of one of the splatters, and although hard, I can get the blade to shave the surface of the lump. What this means, I don't know. Are ... morethe tobacco spit globs real, or maybe just some add-ons? Seems like a lot of deceptive work for an item that is already collectible and didn't sell for all that much in the live auction. Perhaps these old salt-glaze lumps are softer compared to the thinner glazes on the rest of the jug? I'll leave that up to you as the buyer. We have for your consideration a 19th century antique Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug with a Cobalt Blue Double Wheat decor. This 3 gallon single handled jug is in an ovoid shape. The jug is solid and heavy. But it has the following age-related flaws, shown in the photos. There is a chip along the outside top rim(mouth) There is a hairline crack to the left of the cobalt design. There are several places that have flaws in the glaze.
