Antique 1850 - 1899 Doulton named saltglaze stoneware sprigged hunt jug
We are listing this mid to late 1800s saltglaze stoneware jug sprigged hunt jug marked on the front with the impressed name J. Chapman. The jug is only marked on the bottom with an impressed letter A. But the terminal of the handle is the standard one that Doulton used from the mid to late 1800s(see the close up picture) The jug is almost 5.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches at its widest point. In addition to the stag hunt sprigs around the bottom, it has the toby, smoker, drinker, tree and windmill sprigs typical of Doulton hunt jugs of the period. The jug displays well(and named ones are fairly hard to come by) but it does have its flaws. There is a hairline crack running across the bottom of the handle above the terminal, a small piece of sprigging missing off the end of a windmill blade, a repaired area on one side of the rim, and a y hairline ... moreon the bottom that then turns into another y hairline up the front with another thin hairline near that(see all the closeup pictures) All this sounds horrible, but the jug is quite sound and you can only see the flaws when you are close up. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending. Be sure to check out our other current and upcoming auctions of hundreds of antique and vintage objects in glass. There is discoloration on some of the sprigs and a small missing piece of sprigging on one figure(see the last closeup picture) but his is a great rare old jug. One side sprig is Toby Philpot, and the other side sprig is a young boy with his dog- a unique combination of classical and contemporary 1800 themes. In addition to the sprigging on the jug there is engine turning above the base. 1878 James Dudson sprigged pattern experimental stoneware jug
This auction is for a large. 1878 James Dudson, stoneware, hand thrown jug. This piece is possibly an experimental or imperfect piece as it has four factory made holes around the rim, likely to prevent the jug from being sold. There is also a cream colored drip of glaze or slip on the interior wall. Please note that this piece is not made of jasper ware, it is actually made of heavy stoneware. The pattern is known as Sprigged. The base of the piece has several factory markings. The number 1304 is inscribed above two impressed WW. There are two additional symbols on the base which may be the decorator's and potter's marks. There is also a tiny unglazed spot on the base, near the number 1304, please see all photographs) This jug has no breaks, chips, cracks, nor flea bites and measures 8" high. 4.5" at the base and 3.5" ... moreat the rim. Thank you for viewing this listing and best of luck with your bidding.

Very nice Georgian (Scottish?) unusually sprigged highly glazed stoneware jug
We are listing this very interesting highly glazed stoneware jug which may have a Scottish origin(it is unmarked) The front sprig appears to be a Highlands warrior. And the two side sprigs appear to be Scottish shepherds with their flocks. In addition to the sprigging, the jug has a band of beading below the rim, and ring turning above the base. It is 5.5 inches tall, 7.5 inches at its widest point, and is generally in very good condition. There is a small piece of the bottom of the handle missing, very small typical separation cracks on the bottoms of the sprigs, little spots of wear or discoloration at the end of the spout and the high points of the handle, and a couple of minor glaze flaws- none of which detract from the visual effect of this striking jug(see the close up pictures) I have never seen another one like it. Nice early 1800s Georgian brightly glazed classically sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this nice early 1800s brightly glazed stoneware jug with well done classical sprigs which are different than those commonly seen on these jugs. The jug is also ring turned below the sprigging and quite impressive looking. It is 5 inches tall. 8 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition. There are typical minor separation cracks in the sprigging, some staining/residue around the inside of the jug, and a hairline inside the spout, but none of this detracts from the visual beauty of this jug(see the close up pictures) We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. Nice early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed and sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this nice early 1800s blue and white glazed stoneware jug with decorative bands around the rim. Three large classical sprigs, and ring turning above the base. The two side sprigs are from ancient mythology, but I do not know their meaning. The jug is 5 inches tall, almost 7.5 inches at its widest point, and displays very well. It does have minor flaws- slight rubbing on the spout, a couple of missing beads on the upper decorative bands, and a couple of separation lines on the sprigging(as well as crazing inside the jug, and thin hairlines on the bottom) but these do not detract from the visual effect of this old jug. Please view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Large early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed and sprigged stoneware hunt jug
We are listing this large early 1800s Georgian blue and white glazed and sprigged hunt jug. In addition to the standard hunt scene sprigs which encircle the jug. There is also a beaded band below the rim, and three beaded bands below the sprigging. The base on this jug is unusually large, which is sometimes seen on jugs used at sea(for obvious reasons, with the shipboard hazards 200 years ago) The jug is 6 inches tall, 8 inches at its widest point, and displays well. There are hairlines at the bottom of the spout and down one side of the spout(and that one carries through to the inside as well) several separation lines and small losses on the sprigging, and some crackling to the glaze(mostly on the bottom) Still this is a pretty and impressive old jug- please view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. Beautiful early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed and sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this beautiful early 1800s Georgian glazed and sprigged stoneware jug. This is a fantastic(but unmarked) piece. With its alternating acanthus leaves and bluebell stalks, wreath of hop vines encircling the neck, ring turning around the base, and very striking Bacchus spout- all covered by an exquisitely glazed finish. There is an 1830s acanthus and bluebell jug from the Cameron Hall Collection pictured and described on page 6 of A Collector's Guide to Nineteenth-Century Jugs Volume II, but it does not have the decorative spout and handle of this jug. The jug is almost 4.5 inches tall, almost 7 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. This is a truly exceptional 200 year old jug- please view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. Very unusual 1850-1870 Dudson dragon sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this very unusual 1850-1870 Dudson stoneware jug which has a mythical bird handle and is sprigged with four oriental-style dragons. It is only marked on the bottom with a hand incised number 1405- but on page 114 of An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs there is a picture and description of an identical jug(with a metal lid- while the listed jug has 4 holes for a lid. But has never had one) which is identified as a Dudson jug from the 1850 to 1870 period. The jug is over 7.5 inches tall, 7 inches at its widest point, and is in very good condition(with the following exceptions) There is a chip out of the bottom rim, two other smaller flakes out of the bottom of the base rim, and a tiny flake out of the top rim. Only the large chip actually affects the visual display of the jug, and even that is at the very bottom of the jug- ... moreplease view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. Even with the flaws, this is a very nice jug. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Cute little early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed stoneware hunt-sprigged jug
We are listing this tiny little early 1800s Georgian blue and white glazed stoneware jug. Which is sprigged all around with a hunting scene. Although the jug is unmarked, the sprigging is quite well done, as is the engine turned banding above the base- indicating this was from one of the better potteries of that period. The jug is less than 3 inches tall, less than 4 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition. The handle is slightly out of line, there are the usual separation lines on some of the sprigs and the side of the spout, and there are two tiny glaze pops inside the spout- but none of this negatively affects the look of this cute little 200 year old piece. Fantastic early 1800s Georgian brown and white sprigged felspathic stoneware jug
We are listing this extremely nice early 1800s Georgian white felspathic stoneware jug with very detailed white classical/mythological sprigs applied over a dark brown background. Although the jug is unmarked(as most of these felspathic jugs are) The quality of the finish and the details of the sprigging indicates this was produced by a pottery on the level of Wedgwood or Spode(I would add Turner as well, but their jugs did not usually feature the handle style of this jug) The large front sprig features four putti with a ram(one of the putti is unique to my knowledge) and the two side sprigs are different classical mythology scenes. In addition, the handle and the spout are nicely decorated, and there is a band of engine turning between the sprigging and the base. The jug is 5.25 inches tall, 6.25 inches at its widest point, and in very good ... morecondition for a 200 year old piece of pottery. There is a tiny flake on each side of the spout, a thin separation line under the top join of the handle, some faint hairlines on the bottom of the jug, and some of the usual minor separation lines in the sprigging. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. This is an exceptional early 1800s piece. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Large early 1800s Georgian sprigged and gilded stoneware jug (uncommon color)
We are listing this large. Very striking early 1800s Georgian glazed stoneware jug which features gilded trim, large white classical/mythological sprigs, and ring turning above the base. I have never seen another Georgian jug in this beautiful beige color- most are based on blue or dark brown background colors. The piece is unmarked, but the quality of the jug is typical of the major makers of that period. In addition to the three major classical mythology sprigs, there is also a decorative sprig band which runs below the rim. The jug is 7 inches tall, almost 9 inches at its widest point, and displays well. However, it does have several minor flaws, including- a hairline inside the spout, two chips on the top rim(along with missing gilding on the rim and the spout) a missing piece of sprigging on the band under the rim, chips on the spurs ... moreand bottom of the handle, and a chip on the bottom rim, as well as a few of the usual hairlines on the bottom and little separation lines on the sprigging. Still, this is a beautiful 200 year old jug in a rare color. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending. Very pretty early 1800s Georgian blue and white glazed & sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this very pretty early 1800s Georgian stoneware jug which is sprigged with numerous well defined classical mythology scenes(and a decorative band of leaves and grapes under the rim) Ring turned above the base, and beautifully glazed in blue and white. There is no maker's mark(just an impressed number 2 on the base) but this is definitely a top quality 200 year old jug by one of the very best potteries of the time. It is also a very substantial jug- 5.5 inches tall, 8 inches at its widest point, and quite heavy. This is a very attractive jug which displays very well, with only the following minor flaws- there is a hairline in the spout, a couple of very shallow glaze flakes on the bottom rim(which really can't be seen from the side) and tiny separation lines at the handle and the spout. Surprisingly, it does not have ... moreany of the usual separation lines in the sprigging- again indicating the superb quality of the sprigging and glazing of this jug. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself- this is one of the best jugs of this type I have ever seen. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending. Nice early 1800s Georgian highly glazed classically sprigged stoneware jug
We are listing this nice early 1800s Georgian highly glazed stoneware jug which is sprigged with a band of leaves and grapes below the rim. And has a series of classical mythology sprigs around the body(with ring turning below that down to the base) The sprigs are nicely done, although the heavy glaze fills in some of the details, and the rim has been gilded as well. The piece is unmarked(except for an impressed O) but obviously it was produced by a very competent potter. It is 4.25 inches tall, 6.5 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition. There is wear to the gilding(particularly at the spout) and some speckled glaze on the bottom. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. Very pretty early 1800s Georgian animal sprigged glazed stoneware jug
We are listing this very nice early 1800s Georgian glazed stoneware jug. Which is sprigged with an eagle, a stag, and a whippet(an unusual and rather unique combination of sprigs) In addition to the three sprigs, there is a row of beading below the rim, and ring turning above the base. The blue background glaze is a very attractive color as well. The jug is less than 4 inches tall, over 5 inches at its widest point, has no maker's mark, and is in very good condition for its age. There is a hairline which runs down the back side near the handle, but it is much more visible on the inside(you have to be within a few inches to see it from the outside) This is a very unusual and attractive 200 year old piece. Very nice mid 1800s Harding sprigged and engine turned glazed stoneware jug
We are listing this very nice mid 1800s engine turned and highly glazed brown stoneware jug with a band of blue floral sprigging around the body. It is marked on the bottom with the impressed marks HARDING and the number 30. I have seen several similar marked Harding pieces over the years. But I have never found a record of a pottery with that mark(although several Hardings were prominent in English potteries during the 1850s) The piece is over 4.5 inches tall, 5.25 inches at its widest point, and in excellent condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Nicely decorated early 1800s Georgian classically sprigged glazed stoneware jug
We are listing this very nicely decorated early 1800s Georgian glazed stoneware jug. Which has three classical mythology sprigs around the body. In addition, the jug also features a row of beading below the rim, a band of sprigged cross decorations below that, then three more rows of beading, and finally below the large sprigs there are bands of ring turning down to the base. Although the jug is unmarked, it was obviously produced by a very competent potter with all this complexity. It is almost 4 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition for its age. There is a little roughness on the spout and rim, some minor glaze flaws, and a small piece of sprigging missing above the lion's head- but none of this really detracts from the visual display of this great old piece.
