1960s Mulga Wood URN SHAPED VASE- single stem vase Hi Ebayers! I’m pleased to offer this pair of wonderful old urn shaped vase. It looks like the ashes urn. It is made of Mulga wood. Mulga wood was a particularly favoured timber to make decorative household objects in the 1950s and 1960s. This was because of the interesting wood colouration of mulga wood. Just under the bark the timber is a tan/honey colour and the deeper old wood is a darker shade. It has the original sticker which has the words CROWN MULGA AUSTRALIAN WOOD over a map of Australia. It measures 10.5 cm or just over 4 inches high. It is in very good condition but is missing the insert. I have a money back return policy if not satisfied so bid with confidence! It is in restored condition with replaced brass fittings and a small amount of stringing has also been replaced. Despite being restored it still has the blemishes of age and it retains a sense of character and age beneath a new wax finish. Please note there is also a corner of veneer replacement on the lid(see last photo) The two tea containers are mahogany with rosewood lids. The oints of the containers have been reglued. The interior is original and has only been cleaned. The containers have original led linings. There is no glass bowl. Many caddies are sold with replacements. Hand-carved vintage painted Wooden Doll PEASANT WOMAN from Germany or Austria
Vintage Hand-carved and Hand-painted Wooden Peasant Doll This old lady comes from either Germany or Austria. Carved in the forests in the traditional style. I don't know her age, but I would guess at perhaps the mid-20th century. This peasant woman is seated. With her hands on a tray. Whilst it looks in the photographs as though she might be standing up, she was in fact meant to be seated. Underneath her bottom, on an unpainted section, is a hole so she was probably originally part of something else. Her feet are slightly sloped, so she doesn't stand up by herself. She is approx. 16 cms high. Her face is quite striking with a definite'expression' although it is simply done. She is wearing a traditional scarf over her head. Mulga wood(Acacia aneura) has been used extensively for Australian souvenir and gift ware throughout the middle of the 20th century. Its popularity began between the first and second world wars and continued through to the 1960s and 70s. The standard trade name(Mulga) is an Aboriginal word for a long narrow shield made from Acacia wood. Mulga is of great economic importance to Australia. Especially the pastoral industry. Mulga leaves are a valuable fodder source, particularly in times of drought, as it is palatable to stock and provides up to 12% crude protein. Wood from Acacia aneura stands up very well to being buried in soil, so is used for posts. It is also good as firewood, and good-quality charcoal can be produced from it. It also polishes up exceedingly well and as a result made a great medium for Australian souvenirs and gifts. Mulga ... morewas a vital tree to indigenous Australians in Central Australia; the wood was a good hardwood for making various implements. Such as digging sticks and woomeras. The seeds of Acacia aneura were once used to make seedcakes. The"mulga apple" a knob on the tree caused by insects) was commonly eaten by aboriginal people. Mulga tree gum is found on mulga branches and it provided a tasty, honey-like treat for indigneous people. Up for sale are three(3) different 1950's Mulga Wood Napkin holders. This antique inlaid porcupine quill box is at least 100 years old and would make a great object for display or perhaps as repair pieces for another box. It is ebony or ebonised mahogany(sorry I am not an expert. Only passing on what I have read) and the dot pattern would suggest that ir was made in Matara in Ceylon. Condition fair for age- 100- 160 years. Some quills and inlay missing. One hinge rusted and no longer attached- please look at the photos as form part of the description. SUPERB & RARE AUSTRALIAN CARVED TRAY P.O.W TATURA 1940
Special collectable tray carved 1940 by a Prisoner of War housed at the internment camp at Tatura.Beautifully carved with gum leaf decoration and Australian Map and Kangaroo to mid section.My guess is that the tray was probably carved by one of the many Australian/ German people who were interned during the war as(most unlikely) threats to their own country.The tray being carved to express their patriotism for their country.The prisoner number is present but have not been able to obtain info.The tray measures 61 x 35 cms. Quite large, appears to be carved from maybe Kauri Pine or similar.A good piece of Australian Military History

Vintage carved wooden old man figurine Denmark J Jensen c1930
Vintage Danish carved wooden old man figurine c1940 This appealing piece is in very good condition. The figurine is signed to the underside J Jensen and was made in Denmark. Jensen is a common name in Denmark. Like Smith in Australia so to research the artist was problematic with no positive leads. However the piece is similar to others I have dating to the 1940's and the wood appears to be lime wood commonly used for carvings like these. It is well done with facial features of a thoughtful old man. It has been stained to highlight the clothes. Cap and chair. There is no damage to the piece. The figurine is around 180mm tall. This rather roughly carved little box with its 3 carved out compartments. And swivel lid, is an object which appears to have been made with love for someone special. vintage inlaid parquetry box with Ancient Egyptian themes
I am guessing that this box dates from the 1950s. Though not sure. Inside the box is a Swiss music box mechanism that once played'Wiener Walzer' that doesn't really match the theme of the box which is Egyptian, so the inside decor of the box which is lines with fabric and has this mechanism could have been added later. Some of the inlaid pieces are broken or missing so it is by no means in perfect condition, however it is old and interesting. The sides are inlaid with pyramids and sphinxes etc, depicting scenes of Egypt. Will try and post some more photos soon. 20cm X 11 cm and 5 1/2 cm high plus it has little feet.
