Antique Stoneware: Rare L. Kendall Ovoid Jug w/ Cobalt, Chelsea, MA, ca.1840, NR
An uncommon 2Gal. Ovoid Jug from Massachusetts. Ca.1840's. This bears The cobalt-washed stamp of Loammi Kendall, who started a small stoneware manufactory around 1836 in Chelsea, just north of Boston. His production numbers were relatively small and his name is rarely mentioned in discussions of early New England potters(L. Watkins, pp.45-46) This appears to be one of Kendall's earlier Ovoids. The form is not perfect, and the top indented- most likely bottom-stacked in the kiln. The upper and lower handle terminals are primitively brushed with vibrant Cobalt, and there is a wonderful hand-carved stopper that sits perfectly in the spout. This piece has typical manufacturing imperfections(clay scars, stack marks, inclusions, etc. but no post-production flaws! Please see photos for further description and details. An ovoid jug standing 15 inches tall. It measures 5¼ inches in diameter at the base and about 9½ inches in the middle. It is marked: THOMPSON& CO/ 2/ GARDINER. Decorated in blue near the handle. A large shallow lip chip and some tiny base rim nicks. The base has hairlines and three hairline cracks extending vertically from the base.The vertical hairlines extend about 3 inches from the base. The condition is excellent with only a few tiny glaze bursts from the original firing. The neck has five incised grooves and there is a single one at the bottom. The jug is in good condition but the handle was broken at one time and repaired. It was broken up at the top and at the lower end- see pictures. I think a better repair could be done. I will be listing a variety of nice estate-fresh Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is a nice LITTLE ANTIQUE 19THC OVOID STONEWARE JUG. It is 8" high. Looks to be approx. Mid-19thC vintage. But uncertain of precise age. Irregular shape with droopy top lip and indented on one side. Jug has two incised lines around the shoulder. I not believe the jug has any chips. There is a"patchy" area on the top of the handle, but upon close examination it looks to be probably a manufacture flaw, as it appears to have the original glaze over this area(see close-up for your own examination) A small dent spot on the front of the jug also looks to be a manufacture flaw. 1850-1880'S "Beehive" Ovoid Salt Glaze Stoneware Jug With Orignal Cork
This is a 19th to very early 20th CENTURY OVOID SALT GLAZE STONEWARE JUG with COBALT MOTIF. VERY LARGE VINTAGE STONEWARE JUG. VERY UNUSUAL TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL CORK(wood stopper) The JUG is called a“BEEHIVE” style and the motif on the front of the jug is supposed to be a bee. It is Pennsylvania-New York Stoneware. 1850-1880, but it could be from several makers. the piece is hand painted. Stoneware like that is fired to a VERY high temperature(about 2300 degrees F) and about 1720, American potters began producing a form of stoneware developed in many Europe centuries earlier-stoneware glazed with salt and decorated with cobalt blue with a Beautiful Symbol painted in Blue. Salt glazed stoneware like this was very common in the 19th-Century America and potters produced it all over the country, sometimes stamping it with their maker’s marks- ... morebut most of the time, they did not put on an actual name-like this one. It is 11 3/4" tall and the base diameter is 7 3/4" It has an attached handle. There is a cobalt blue decoration on the front of the jug and the handle is accented with the blue cobalt. Antique American Folk Pottery Hand Thrown Ovoid Stoneware Jug With Drip Pattern
Here for your consideration is an antique American Folk pottery stoneware jug. This is a hand thrown piece. Ovoid in shape, measuring 12 1/2" tall and is 5" in diameter at the base. This has a deep tan salt glaze finish with a drip glaze design and circular rib marks. There is no potter's stamp or other identification marks but the ovoid shape is earlier than the straight sided shape. This would indicate it dates to about the mid 1800's. This is in good condition with some character flaws common in the manufacturing of these pieces like glaze skips and small"grit" pieces. There is a small nick on the belly but nothing that distracts from the beauty of the piece. There is a chip to the lower edge rim but it is glazed over so I think it must have happened during its removal from the wheel and is part of the piece's ... morecharacter. Circa 1800 to 1825, or so, and most likely Pennsylvania in origin. Jug is only 4 1/4" high with a 4" diameter, and it is in excellent, original condition with just a couple of very small flakes on the rim and the base edge. It features a reddish-orange ground with dark manganese dribbles around the upper shoulder with a clear lusterous lead glaze that is still in near perfect condition. The jug is very finely potted by a master potter with good balance and many fine details worked into the clay not commonly found on most early redare pieces. Up for auction from our own collection is a very early Reddish Brown Glazed Stoneware Ovoid Jug. We bought this at a Wisconsin farm auction over 35 years ago. It stands 10 5/8" tall. And is 5" in diameter across the base and approximately 7" in the middle. This is a very early piece of stoneware and I would guess it to be from the 1850's to the 1880's- but please look carefully and do your own dating. It is in excellent condition with just the small pictured chips on the top of the rim spout and some glaze pops. There is also a glaze miss on the handle. EXTRA LARGE 3 GALLON OVOID JUG STONEWARE BLUE DECORATION ANTIQUE AS OFFERED
This large antique ovoid jug was acquired at a New Hampshire estate sale a short while ago. It is a beautiful jug with blue on it and these large specimens of ovoid shape are getting really hard to find. Unfortunately. This jug has received some abuse and there are cracks throughout and two small chips on the bottle mouth. Look carefully at the pictures to make sure these are defects that you can live with-still, this jug is very impressive. The cracks start at the top(two of them)one goes through the blue decoration and splits in two and then travel about. In the blue area, you can clearly see the number 3 stamped. There is also a weak name stamp but the only letters I can make out are" ANNGE. The backside crack runs alongside the handle and down and then crosses over under it. This all being said, the cracks are still quite tight but ... moreI would not be swinging it around by its handle-best to pick this up by its bottom. There is a chip on the bottom and as you can see there are felt circles to protect surfaces. There are several flaws in the glaze and a couple of kiln"bumps" all made in the jug's production. It measures about 15" tall. While I make every effort to give an accurate description. This stoneware jug measures 11" H on a 4 1/4" base. Diameter is approximately 8" at its widest point. Clear makers mark and#1 with a cobalt wash. Redware Ovoid Orange Speckled Antique Jug
This is a wonderful antique Redware ovoid orange speckled jug in a great early form. It measures 9" H and the base is 4 1/4" in diameter. It is 6 3/4" in diameter at it's widest point. It has a nice speckled decoration throughout and an applied strap handle. As you can see in our photos. Due to the age of the piece, the glaze has lifted in several places along the bottom edge of the jug. There is a small chip on the edge of the handle, along with the various marks and bumps that are a part of these very old pieces. Salt Glaze Ovoid Crock or Jug, New York, 19th Century Signed Lyons
I am so pleased to offer this wonderful antique ovoid stoneware jar or crock. Finished in a Salt Glaze finish. This crock is in great condition with no cracks or repairs. The applied handle is perfect, which is a rarity for a crock jug of this age. There is one small chip about 1 inch in diameter at the base line. The measurements of this jug are 12 inches tall, 6.75 inches diameter across the base, and circumference around the widest part at the middle is 25.5 inches. The glaze is in perfect condition with firing imperfections. There are some variations in the gray color due to the high mineral content in the soil that occurred during the firing process. This color variation is a rusty shade at the base of this crock. Salt glaze pottery is stoneware with a glaze of glossy, translucent and slightly orange-peel-like texture which was formed ... moreby throwing common salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of the firing process. Sodium from the salt reacts with silica in the clay body to form a glassy coating of sodium silicate. This crock has a classic ovoid shape and a terrific eye catching look. The term ovoid is used in a broader sense which refers to the shape of an egg. The 3-dimensional version of an oval is called an ovoid. Purchased from an old New York estate. This jug is signed"Lyons" Lyons, New York was a very large stoneware producing area of New York. Many noted and prominent potters are from this area. Lyon's pottery production started around 1822, in a location where the new Erie Canal was to open. The business flourished after the Erie Canal opened with canal boats used to bring in clay from NJ and Long Island and Albany. These boats also delivered finished wares all along the canal. If you are a crock or stoneware collector, this jug will be a great addition to your collection. I do apologize for the cost of postage, this jug is heavy.

Antique Primitive Ovoid Redware Slip Decorated Jug, 1800s Folk Pottery
Here's a beautiful. Antique, redware jug in very good, as found condition! It has a fabulous, ovoid shape and is whimsically slip decorated and banded all the way around the upper third portion. This jug has an applied handle with thumbprint that connects with the spout that has never been broken and isn't chipped. The rim around the spout has some very old wear from past use; the edges are uneven and a couple chips are worn smooth. There is an early, carved, 3-inch, wooden stopper tied to the handle with handmade cord that adds some intrigue and charm to the piece. We found this old jug in the cellar of an old barn and it's just as we discovered it. Still dusty and a bit dirty. The patina hasn't been altered in any way. It has wonderful coloring and is blackened on the lower third portion on one side. Most of it appears to ... morebe unglazed with the possible exception of the area just above where the decorations begin as well as a few random spots within them. In the blackened portion of this jug is a spider hairline that is thin, faint, and not a structural concern. The overall height including the wooden stopper is 12 1/2 inches; without it, the jug stands 11 inches high. The spout measures just 1 inch in diameter while the bottom is 4 inches across. The bulbous midsection has a diameter of about 8 1/2 inches and a 26 inch circumference. It was likely used to hold water back in its time and wasn't considered anything special. Now days, antique redware is very collectible and great for interior decorating. This jug is a well-preserved, primitive piece of folk pottery that we offer to the highest bidder without reserve. ANTIQUE 2 GAL. OVOID STONEWARE JUG-COBALT BLUE ACCENTS-MARKED “GOODWIN WEBSTER”
This is a lovely Antique 2 Gallon“Ovoid” Stoneware Jug featuring Cobalt Blue Accents around the Handle and Neck. The jug is clearly marked in front by the maker“GOODWIN WEBSTER” Horace Goodwin and Mack Webster operated the pottery in Hartford. Connecticut from 1831-1840. The ovoid jug is beautifully shaped standing 13” high and measuring 9” across its bulbous center from which it tapers upward to its 1-3/4” diameter neck and downward to 5” across its base. The jug has a period stoneware Gray/Tan color and features a wonderful Saltmarsh Glaze. The short somewhat off kilter neck has 2 decorative incised rings and the handle is similarly decorated its entire length with 3 incised lines, the deepest of which is at the center with a lesser one on either side. There is 1 tight hairline near the bottom and 2 old small chips along the edge of the ... morebase which can’t be seen when placed upright. The handle is noticeably chipped to one side of the incised decoration from long ago adding further to the character of the ovoid. There is no staining or discoloration. The jug has a 1/2” drilled hole near the base and must have been used as a lamp at one time and could again if desired. This is truly a lovely Antique 2 Gallon“Ovoid” Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Blue Accents marked“GOODWIN WEBSTER” which makes a striking display.

RARE DOUBLE HANDLE OVOID JUG INCISED BIRD ON BRANCH WALLINGFORD, VT
This antique ovoid jug is from the living estate of a Connecticut collector. The maker of the jug is unknown. On the jug is S.E. Leonard. Wallingford, VT. S.E. Leonard did live in Wallingford, VT, however, he was not a crock maker, rather a blacksmith and hotel owner. Any flaws or damage have been shown in the photographs. The left handle has a hairline crack at the top running approximately 2" from the open rim down. The is also one other where the left handle is thumb pressed onto the body, running horizontal approximately 1" otherwise, the jug is in very good condition. with no chips or cracks. Also, in the photographs, I noticed the color is off. The jug is a dark sand color, not a gray. The true color is in the close up photo of the incised bid. The jug measures as follows; 18" high top to bottom, 10" wide across ... morethe widest part of the handles, the handles are 9" from where they are attached to the top and attached to the body, 37 1/4" diameter around the widest part of the body, and 6" across the bottom. Antique Rare E.Wentworth Norwich. Conn. Ovoid Stoneware Jug 11 1/2" tall x 8" wide( at widest point) Does have some cobalt blue markings. Impressed in blue it is marked E. Wentworth Norwich Weighs about 5 1/2 lbs. While other forms of ceramics became more widely available during the 1800s. Local potters continued to produce the ever-popular stoneware. In Norwich, Armstrong& Wentworth and Sidney Risley were two well-known 19th-century stoneware manufacturers. Peleg Armstrong was married to Erastus Wentworth’s sister. The partners purchased the Norwich pottery business of William Cleaveland in 1814. This jug is made by E. Wentworth only so I assume it was made before 1814 when he was partnered with Peleg Armstrong. A lot of the jugs I found were done by Armstrong and Wentworth. Great Condition!
