Presenting an exceptional vintage Maori Maripi Patu masterfully hand carved from one solid piece of Native timber. The club-like body is intricately carved ... morewith a pierced design and decorated to both faces with traditional swirling motifs intended to confuse the enemy. Discs of inlaid Paua shell add a dazzling detail. While this piece looks very much like a fierce and imposing Patu (and would compliment a collection of such) it was infact traditionally a cutting implement called a Maripi and not a weapon. Traditionally shark teeth were bound with fibre to the curved edge. This exceptional example perfectly exhibits the use of the bound shark teeth by using faux shark teeth to complete the form, wonderfully exhibiting the traditional technique and creating a striking display piece.

Medium: Timber Carving BAULE(BAOULE. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the ... moreComoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. OLD AFRICAN WOOD CARVING OF A GAZELLE - MARKED: "HANDCRAFTED PATRICE LUMUMBA"
THIS IS A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT ITEM. A GAZELLE OR ANTELOPE ON A BASE. ALL CARVED FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD. THE TYPE OF TIMBER IS UNKNOWN. WE EXPECT IT IS AN AFRICAN SPECIES. IT IS VERY HARD AND SMOOTH WITH A FINE GRAIN. THE MAKER SEEMS TO HAVE CHOSEN THIS PARTCIULAR PIECE OF TIMBER BECAUSE THE GRAIN FLOWS WITH THE LINES OF THE ANIMAL.SEE PICTURES. FROM APPEARANCES. WE WOULD ESTIMATE THIS TO HAVE BEEN CARVED SOMTIME AROUND THE 1940's OR 1950's. BUT THAT IS JUST OUR BEST GUESS. WE HAVE OWNED THIS CARVING FOR FIVE YEARS AND DO NOT KNOW IT'S HISTORY. IT IS BEAUTIFUL TO TOUCH AND HAS A LOVELY"PATINA OF AGE" THE BRASS BASE PLATE LOOKS ORIGINAL AND IS ENGRAVED WITH THE WORDS: HANDCRAFTED PATRICE LUMUMBA. IN RESEARCHING THE MAKER WE FOUND REFERENCE TO ONLY ONE MAN WITH THIS NAME. THE PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA WE FOUND ON GOOGLE ... moreWAS AN AMAZING HERO OF AFRICA. BEFORE MANDELA. LUMUMBA WAS AN INSPIRATION TO ALL WHO STRUGGLED FOR FREEDOM. CHE GUEVARA CALLED HIM"THE MOST IMPORTANT MAN TO STAND ON AFRICAN SOIL. THERE ARE CURRENCY AND STAMP ISSUES DEDICATED TO HIM FROM MANY COUNTRIES.AND A UNIVERSITY IN RUSSIA NAMED AFTER HIM.AND MANY, MANY OTHER TRIBUTES. PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA(2ND JULY 1925- 11TH FEBRUARY 1961) SPOKE OUT AND STOOD UP FOR THE FREEDOM OF HIS COUNTRY AND OF HIS PEOPLE. BECOMING THE FIRST DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. A BRILLIANT AND CHARISMATIC LEADER. WHO WAS CRUELLY ASSINATED BY COLONIAL FORCES IN 1961. WE TRIED TO FIND OUT IF THIS MAN MAY HAVE CARVED OUR LITTLE GAZELLE. BUT WITH NO SUCCESS. WE DID EMAIL AN AMERICAN SCHOLAR WHO WAS FAMILIAR WITH PATRICE LUMUMBA IN 1960-61 AND THEY SAID HE DID NOT CARVE AND WOULD NOT HAVE ENGRAVED THE PIECE IN THIS WAY. WE WONDERED IF HE MAY HAVE CARVED THIS AS A YOUNGER MAN.DURING ONE OF THE TIMES THE COLONIAL GOVERNMENT IMPRISONED HIM? MAYBE SOMEONE WHO KNEW HIM AT THAT TIME MAY HAVE MOUNTED THIS CARVING IN THE BRASS BASE with the engraved words.BECAUSE IT ALL LOOK OF THE SAME AGE? WE D

This auction is for a wonderful old dish.Made from an antique African slave bangle. The large heavy bangle is made from white metal/coin silver and would date to the early 19th C.The piece has,at a later date been made into a bowl-with the addition of a handmade copper liner. There are some dents in the bangle-from age and wear but it is very well made and heavily detailed.I hope that you can see this from my photo's. It weighs over 400 grams and measures 12cm in diametre. It stands 5cm high.It is a majestic piece.I have owned this dish for years now and don't even remember where I found it.When I purchased it I didn't even realise what it was-it was much later that I found out it's history.I am currently divesting myself of some of my own tribal bits and pieces. So you may want to check out my other auctions also as I am always ... morehappy to combine posting on any of my listings and I will be listing more items over the next few days. Postage within Australia would be $8.95.Please use the ebay postage calculator to find your International postage quote. You can email me if you have any other questions.Thank you for looking!

Baule Mblo Costume Mask, Ivory Coast , African Tribal Arts, African Masks
Item: Baule Mblo Costume Mask Specifications: 36 x 24 x 12 cm Origin: Ivory Coast(see ethnographical notes below) Context: Used in skits and solo dances. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the ... moreland of Senufo. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples, supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is demonstrated

RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C Please look to Sotheby's Catalogues. Miller's& Carter's price guides for similar This impressive Lost Wax sculptural vessel was made by the Yoruba group of Nigeria. The Yoruba peoples of Nigeria have what is probably the longest extant artistic tradition in Africa. The nation state is comprised of numerous subsections that were joined historically by the rise and collapse of the Ife(12th to 15th centuries) and Benin(13th to 19th centuries) polities. Each of the sub-kingdoms– including Oyo. Ijebu and smaller units towards the west– had their heyday, and are loosely united through language and culture, although they still retain a measure of independence in terms of their ... moreartistic traditions. The Yoruba are sedentary. Agriculturist and hierarchical, and are ruled by hereditary kings known as Obas. Access to the supernatural world is supervised by a very complex arrangement of priests and spiritual intermediaries, who straddle the cosmological border between the tangible realm of the living(aye) and the invisible realm of the spirits and the hereafter(orun) The creator of the world is Olodumare– the source of all ase(life force) and his spiritual minions include all manner of spirits, gods and ancestors who can be appealed to or appeased through human intermediaries. Most Yoruban artistic heritage is designed to thwart evil spirits, and to placate or honour those that bring good fortune to the populace. Without contextual information. The function of this item is uncertain. Given its dimensions, it is likely to have occupied a ritual role, This is an impressive piece of African art. Women, who are believed to make the soil more fruitful, are responsible for the tasks of planting and harvesting the crops. Men are responsible for clearing the fields for planting and practice some nominal hunting. Political Systems The Babanki.
