Salt glazed stoneware Bellarmine/bartmankruge. Possibly 18th century. It is 8 7/8 inches high and 5 inches wide. Only the lip has been repaired by an amateur, nothing else is broken, cracked, or repaired. The clay pulled away in shrinkage and firing at the bottom of the handle, but that was"in the making" Purchased in Germany many years ago. It has a beautiful salt glazed surface and firing scars. ANTIQUE 17TH CENTURY BELLARMINE/BARTMANN OR "BEARDED MAN" STONEWARE JUG
This is a very nice antique 17th century Bellarmine/Bartmann stoneware jug. A Bellarmine or"Bearded Man" jug is a type of decorated stoneware. This jug has the signature decorative detail of a bearded face mask appearing on the lower neck of the vessel. Along with a medallion in the middle of the body. This Bellarmine jug is a nice size. And measures ~9 3/4" high x 5 1/2" wide at the widest point. The jug has a ovoid shape. Typical for this period, and a nice brown mottled glaze. Although it has been restored, the jug is in good condition for its age, and very stable. There are no major chips, but some minor chips on the perimeter of the neck opening, and one on the base. The face and medallion are clear, and easy to make out. The jug has a very nice surface and a pleasing patina. I do try to accurately describe this jug, ... morebut I am not an expert in this field, and ask that you please zoom in on all of the pictures for detailed close-ups. Thank you for looking. And any shipping cost overage will be promptly refunded.
