This F. B. Norton& Co. Worchester. Mass. jug came from an auction in Vermont. When I bid on the jug, I had no idea it had problems. The top has chips, see the 6th picture. The bottom has one chip, see the 7th picture. There is some light chipping in the design, see the 8th picture. The handle has two cracks, see the 10th and 11th picture, and there is a crack around the top, see the 5th, 6th, and last pictures. It measures 14.5 inches tall and 8.5" in diameter at the base.

For sale is a large vintage two-tone 2 gallon whiskey stoneware crock jug. It stands 16" tall and is 8 1/2" across the bottom and weighs almost 14 lbs. The wording on the tan section is Mile End Distillery Co. Ltd. 86, Mile End Road, E. 2. Overall the jug is very clean and in very good condition, the only flaw I can see on it is a hairline crack on the back side(see photo 4) I do not know if the crack goes all the way through, or if is just in the glaze, but it does not take away from the appearance of the item. What better reason, to take a peek at our E& L P Norton, Bennington Vermont 2 Gallon salt Glazed Stoneware Jug with strong blue cobalt design and clear impression signature recently deaccessioned from one man's lifelong collection not far from where this was manufactured in the 19th c pottery. Jug shows well with very clear imprint in capital letters over numeral"2" over a bold and New England typical butterfly wing plume spray with dotted pistil on top done in thick and very stable cobalt blue slip. Strong single rear strap handle is particularly nice on this example and easy to grasp. It has an overall lightly dappled dimpled surface in tannish grey color with one mild line drip and kiss mark on rear from kiln ... moremanufacture. This is of course a two gallon size measuring 13.5" tall and 8" across base. There is also a tan dry kiss mark on lower front left bottom near edge which makes jugs all the more charming. Please study pictures taken outside in natural light to see this item and ask questions you may have of any concerns. Condition Report: Newly fresh to market. Not kicked around mall or dealer stock. This is a very fine Western Stoneware 2 gallon crock jug. It is 12 inches tall and has a 8.75 inches diameter base. It is two-tone with a vivid brown top and a cream colored body. It has a big blue number 2 and a blue western stoneware maple leaf on the body. There appears to be only minor ware on the base. There are no visible chips on the handle or spout. There are some minor chips on the top edge of the body. The overall presentation is very nice with great luster. This would make a very nice display item.

It has the common Albany slip glaze that is hand applied to the top above the shoulder and the classic bristol glaze below the shoulder. This jug was probably slip cast in a mold circa 1890-1920 and holds about 2 gallons. These type jugs were sold primarily to be used as water or vinegar jugs. It is not signed. The jug is in very good antique condition with some minor chips on the high sharp edges(see photos) No cracks. It is very heavy weighing about 12 pounds. The jug will hold fluid and does not leak. There is no maker's mark and the age is unknown to me. This is a used item that shows wear. There are blemishes in the finish- hairline cracks. Chipping, pitting and loss, but no cracks in the vessel. It's sound is a nice"ring" There is wear through to the clay body at the neck edge and 1 small chip opposite the worn area.
