I see a few shallow chips on the front rim(where the white portion begins) There is a 3 inch rough section along the rim on the back, as well as a small hairline crack. There is a small spot on the mouth of the jar where it wasn't completely covered with the brown glaze. I believe any other imperfections I see are only production flaws. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times including a few of the customary(almost obligatory) tiny rim chips. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware pot/jar in the style of the third or fourth century B.C. Warring States Period. The style of pot, the intricate impressing, and the grey clay color suggest it might be of Chou origin. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. Antique. Western Stoneware Co. 1 gallon, top pattern Western Shoulder jug. Rare top patterned, No 1 in a maple leaf. Measures 10 1/4 inches tall and the base is 7 inches across. Has a very thin hair line crack on the spout(picture 7) but not bad. There is a mold defect when it was fired, and appears to have caused a glaze bubble which made the hole on top of maple leaf. This not a chip but occured during the firing process. Makes in unique. There is a chip on the bottom of jug which you cannot see when sitting on a surface. Comes from a smoke free home. Nice old one gallon whiskey shoulder jug from Western Stoneware Co. in Monmouth. IL. It has been used and shows some wear mainly around the bottom. There is a surface crack around the bottom(pic. 4) but the jug doesn't leak. The bottom edge has a couple of chips, see pics. 5-6. There are a couple of spots where the brown shiny glaze wasn't applied uniformly at the factory. I do not have a cork for this jug. Shipping allows for double boxing. For your consideration is a 1/2 gallon shoulder jug. Made the Western Stoneware Company. This company was formed in 1906 as a result of A.D. Philpot buying out seven regional manufacturers of stoneware products; then merging them together. These seven companies were located in three different states(Illinois, Missouri and Iowa) The headquarters of Western Stoneware were located in Monmouth, Illinois. The maple leaf and writing are in blue and cannot be scrubbed or scraped off. Below the shoulder, this jug has an off white glaze and above the shoulder, is brown glaze. The style of the maple leaf leads me to believe this jug was manufactured before 1940. This jug has a total height of slightly more than 9" From the surface it is sitting on to the shoulder is slightly more than 6" and the bottom is almost 5 1/2" in diameter. On ... morethe shoulder, are two chips; one of these chips is in the center of the front. The other chip is on the right side, but close to the back. Very close to the back, on the left side is a crack. This crack starts near the shoulder and continues all the way down the side and on to the bottom where it becomes two cracks. Vintage Western Stoneware 1 Gallon Jug Monmouth, ILL Pattern Top
This is a great vintage Americana one gallon stoneware jug with handle. The dark brown glazed portion on the top has a very decorative leaf pattern on it. This particular jug has a corn cob stopper in it. The jusg is 11 inches high and 6 3/4 inches across at the bottom. On the side it has a blue oak leaf with 1 WESTERN STONEWARE CO. MONMOUTH, ILL. in the center of it. It is in great condition.

This item is in excellent condition with NO chips or hairlines(see handle notes below) 11" tall x 7" wide I'm not a Western Stoneware expert so please review the pictures carefully and let me know of any questions. The only place that looks odd is on the handle. I took extra pics of it(see last 3 pics) Its STRUCTURALLY SOUND but appears to have been produced with a flaw. I don't believe its been fixed in any way.

Rare Size Antique Western Stoneware Advertising Jug / 6 1/4 inches tall
The item for sale is a hard to find small antique stoneware Western Stoneware jug in good overall condition. This piece is original. The jug has ho chips or breaks. There is a seam separation where the top section meets the base section(see pics) This does not go through and the piece does not leak even under pressure. This is unusually small measuring 6 1/4 inches tall with a 4 1/4 inch base diameter. Please see the pics for details. This is being sold as we found it in an estate clean out. Thank you.

Vintage 2 1/2 Qt Western Stoneware "Moonshine" Whiskey Jug--Beige, Reddish-Brown
Offered is this vintage glazed stoneware"moonshine" whiskey jug. Made by Western Stoneware and bearing their familiar maple leaf logo. The jug sits about 9" high and is approx. 5 1/2" in diameter across the bottom. I have measured its capacity and it will hold 2 1/2 quarts. The jug is in very good condition except for two small chips. One near the top opening and a smaller one along the edge of the handle(see last photo) Otherwise, there are a few of the typical bumps and blotches in the glazing found on these jugs.
