A 17th. century “Westerwald” salt glazed stoneware wine jug around 1690
From an old Dutch stoneware collection I’m offering a German beer jug. The jug was made in Westerwald in Germany at the end of the 17 th. century. The jug is decorated with leaves in manganese in a decorated grey square against a cobalt blue background. On top of the jug there is a pewter lid. Which dates according to my opinion, from a later date The condition of the jug is almost perfect, there are two very small hairlines in the handle and there is a crack in the foot(see pictures) furthermore there are no chips or restorations. The height is approx. 8,5” 21,5 cm)

Handles were generally recurved or curled up at the lower ends, but in the later 1800's this practise was abandon and plain handles or those terminating in a flat point were much more common. A 17th. century “Westerwald” salt glazed stoneware wine jug around 1680/1690
From a Dutch stoneware collection I’m offering a German beer jug. The jug was made in Westerwald in Germany at the end of the 17 th. century. The jug is decorated with leaves in manganese in a decorated grey square against a cobalt blue background. The condition of the jug is almost perfect. There are two very small hairlines in the handle and there is a crack in the foot(see pictures) furthermore there are no chips or restorations. I think the jug had a pewter lid in the past, because you can see a discoloration on the handle(see pictures) the height is approx. 8” 20.5 cm) Provenance: this Westerwald jug was excavated in the city of Amsterdam in the eighties on the Prinsengracht(one of the famous canals of Amsterdam) and has been in a private collection until recent.

Rare Cobalt Stoneware Crock 19th Century Antique Butter Churn Jug Westerwald
Up for bid is an incredibly rare 10 Liter Cobalt Blue Stoneware Jug Complete with Wooden Butter Churn. Likely dates to the 1870's-1880's. I cannot find many examples where the Cobalt Glaze was applied beyond the flower design and with handles like this one. The ones I found that looked similar to this were by the Bellarmine and Westerwald Pottery company in Germany which may explain why the measurement is in Liters rather than Gallons. The heavily decorated deep Cobalt design goes all the way around and is on both sides. Beautiful piece would make a wonderful water cooler. Two Gallon Jug measures 14" Tall and is 7.5" in diameter at the base and 10.5" at the handles. The opening is 5.5" in diameter. Crock is in very good condition without any chips or cracks inside or out. I recently acquired a large collection ... moreof some beautiful antique crocks and jugs which I will be listing in the coming weeks. Check out my! Please see pictures for details and condition. Condition is subjective and items are sold as is but I would be happy to answer questions or provide more pictures if needed. Also please let me know if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason before opening a case. I will work hard to make sure you are satisfied and you can always start a case if you are not happy with my response. Please realize that Ebay is pretty tough on sellers any time a case gets opened even if the customer is happy in the end and leaves positive feedback. If you have information that could help me improve my listing please let me know. Thank you

LARGE AND SUPERBLY DECORATED WESTERWALD STONEWARE BULBOUS JUG circa 1720 - 174
I am pleased to offer our collectors and dealers this large decorated Westerwald stoneware GR jug. The jug is superbly decorated, a tall bulbous form with a reeded neck washed in manganese. The frontal GR medallion is molded in the form of a large crown above the GR monogram with bird'supporters' on either side. And an angel head below. The medallion is surrounded by vines. Leaves and flowers; from Germany, Westerwald region. There is a white spot in the third picture in the flower- this is not damage but an extra piece of pottey that dropped there and was fired and never taken off. These wonderfully crafted attractive tavern jugs and mugs were made in large numbers during the late-seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. They were exported to England from the Westerwald region of Germany. From where many of them made their way ... moreon to the American colonies. Quite a number of these beautiful vessels have been excavated on east coast archaeological sites. They would have been used as tavern storage and drinking vessels for beer and wine. The neck of the jug is decorated with multiple grooves washed with manganese purple under the glaze. The top of the handle has a hole pierced in the clay to enable a pewter lid to be fitted. This would keep out flies and dust from the beer inside. These fabulous stoneware mugs and jugs represented a considerable advance in the hygiene of drinkers over the old porous earthenware vessels they superseded- they could be cleaned with relative ease and they did not easily chip or crack. The jug has a number'3' capacity mark incised on the shoulder- see photographs(number 10 is the smallest in the range of GR jugs made with number 1 being the largest) Time period is 1720- 1740. Size; 8 1/2"t x 3 1/2"b x 3"o
WESTERWALD STONEWARE JUG, SUPERB CONDITION, CIRCA 1740 - 1760
Westerwald Stoneware. In superb condition, bulbous Tavern Jug with a central GR medallion; with a number 6 capacity mark on the shoulder; Germany, Westerwald region, circa 1740- 1760. This is an elegant, perfect condition. Westerwald salt glazed stoneware GR tavern jug. The jug is of tall bulbous form with a reeded neck washed in manganese. The frontal GR medallion is petal- shaped and has a stylized crown above the GR monogram with rudimentary leaves and stems beneath. On each side of the medallion there are large incised flowers a little like tulips. The neck of the jug is decorated with multiple grooves which are covered with a very attractive translucent wash of manganese glaze. The neck also has three impressed circle near the top, which is very unusual because there is usually just one. These circles often appear on later GR jugs but ... moretheir significance is a mystery. The top of the handle has two holes pierced in the clay to enable a pewter lid to be fitted. This would keep out flies and dust from the beer inside. These fabulous mugs represent a considerable advance in the hygiene of drinkers over the old porous earthenware vessels they superseded- they could be cleaned with relative ease and they did not easily chip or crack. The condition is really superb- outstanding for this early date of manufacture. There are no chips. No cracks and no restoration. The jug has a number'6' capacity mark incised on the shoulder- see photographs(number 10 is the smallest in the range of GR jugs made with number 1 being the largest) Time period is 1740- 1760.
