vintage stoneware wine jug, with handle and cork aged decor
This is a heavy classic stoneware wine jug it is believed to be from around the 1920's since it was my girlfriends grandmothers she got when she was in her early 20's and she currently is 93. It weighs a lone 6.83 pounds and has a glazed finished as you can see. There are marks as I have shown and that helps with the description. The age marks has not effected the integrity of this item at all. I just want this item to go to a good home and with someone who might have more information on this and can appreciate it. It measures approx. 14" tall and 10" wide. This is still a solid piece. There is some discoloration and some cracks along the outside(see pictures) However. This does still hold water and has no leaks. We've cleaned out the inside as best we could, but it wouldn't hurt to go over it again. This is great for some rustic/country decor. Nifty Mini Jug! Here is a very neat old slice of Americana. This truly a"Little Brown Jug" The small. Sturdy piece is about 3" diameter, 6" high, with a small handle& a 1/2" opening- probably holds around 10 oz. To give you an idea of its density, this small item weighs over a pound. It has a two-tone brown motif, with the dark brown limited to about the upper 1" of the jug. not quite to the shoulder. So far as I can tell, no maker markings, or writing whatsoever on this piece. Sons of a Moon Township(now Center Township) farmer, in the town of Bridgewater. The exact location of their operation is not known at the present time, but we do know that they obtained their clay from a hillside near the confluence of Brady's Run and the Beaver River, around 1840. This date can be confirmed by a listing in the 1841 Bridgewater Business directory showing James and William L. Hamilton as potters. The Hamiltons produced utilitarian salt glazed stoneware in the form of jars, crocks, and jugs decorated with cobalt blue flowers, vines and lined embellishments in the typical German or tutonic tradition. in 1847. Russell purchased property in Boro Township. It was probably at this time that he began to produce stoneware marked, R.W. Russell(with and without"Beaver Pa. as his trademark. Many of the pieces produced by the Russell pottery were decorated with unusual leaf and flower designs sometimes coming from both sides of the piece and meeting in the center. Washington in 1953.The jug is 9 1/2 inches tall& 7 1/2 inches in diameter.There is an almost unnoticeable 1 inch long surface crack at the top of the large part on the side& another 1 1/2 inch long at the bottom of the side.I filled it with water& it did not leak but I would use it for decorative purposes only.
