Antique. Western Stoneware Co. 1 gallon, top pattern Western Shoulder jug. Rare top patterned, No 1 in a maple leaf. Measures 10 1/4 inches tall and the base is 7 inches across. Has a very thin hair line crack on the spout(picture 7) but not bad. There is a mold defect when it was fired, and appears to have caused a glaze bubble which made the hole on top of maple leaf. This not a chip but occured during the firing process. Makes in unique. There is a chip on the bottom of jug which you cannot see when sitting on a surface. Comes from a smoke free home. Nice old one gallon whiskey shoulder jug from Western Stoneware Co. in Monmouth. IL. It has been used and shows some wear mainly around the bottom. There is a surface crack around the bottom(pic. 4) but the jug doesn't leak. The bottom edge has a couple of chips, see pics. 5-6. There are a couple of spots where the brown shiny glaze wasn't applied uniformly at the factory. I do not have a cork for this jug. Shipping allows for double boxing. Vintage Western Stoneware Company Gallon Jug 1902-1906
Vintage Western Stoneware Co identified by the Blue Maple Leaf without plant number indicating it was made between 1902 and 1906. This jug will hold 130 ozs of liquid(tested) It is 10 1/2" tall, 7" in diameter with a 1" opening at the top and weighs just over 5 lbs. It has a blemish just above the maple leaf and on the end of the maple leaf that we are referring to as a birthmark because it appears to have been made at the time of glazing, like it scraped another jug or the oven at some point. And the dark streaks are within the glaze and will not come off. On the bottom edge there is another blemish that is 3/4" long and also looks like it was part of the process. There is some minor crackling but you have to look real close to see it. For 100 years old this one is in very good shape.

For your consideration is a 1/2 gallon shoulder jug. Made the Western Stoneware Company. This company was formed in 1906 as a result of A.D. Philpot buying out seven regional manufacturers of stoneware products; then merging them together. These seven companies were located in three different states(Illinois, Missouri and Iowa) The headquarters of Western Stoneware were located in Monmouth, Illinois. The maple leaf and writing are in blue and cannot be scrubbed or scraped off. Below the shoulder, this jug has an off white glaze and above the shoulder, is brown glaze. The style of the maple leaf leads me to believe this jug was manufactured before 1940. This jug has a total height of slightly more than 9" From the surface it is sitting on to the shoulder is slightly more than 6" and the bottom is almost 5 1/2" in diameter. On ... morethe shoulder, are two chips; one of these chips is in the center of the front. The other chip is on the right side, but close to the back. Very close to the back, on the left side is a crack. This crack starts near the shoulder and continues all the way down the side and on to the bottom where it becomes two cracks. This is a very fine Western Stoneware 2 gallon crock jug. It is 12 inches tall and has a 8.75 inches diameter base. It is two-tone with a vivid brown top and a cream colored body. It has a big blue number 2 and a blue western stoneware maple leaf on the body. There appears to be only minor ware on the base. There are no visible chips on the handle or spout. There are some minor chips on the top edge of the body. The overall presentation is very nice with great luster. This would make a very nice display item.

This old jug was made by Western Pottery Co. in Denver. Colorado. The cork looks like it is starting to petrify, it's so old. It has a couple of chips, some scratches, some paint marks typical of stoneware that is this old. It measures 11 1/4" tall x 7 1/2" diameter& weighs 6 lbs. 12.2 oz.
