The folks making these were clearly interesting in production versus artistic quality at the time. This is perhaps a beer or liquor bottle of the period, perhaps ink or something else as well. It has no makers mark and is probably from the mid to lat 1800's. The bottle is relatively thick walled or hefty and stands about 5.75 inches tall and 2.75 inches in diameter at the bottom. Nicely primitive in appearance with a brown glaze or salt glaze with occasional red specks, etc. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. We'll start this old primitive pottery or stoneware bottle low so enjoy the auction. We'll pack this carefully. ANTIQUE VINTAGE CROCKERY JUG STONEWARE POTTERY TINY BROWN SPECKS ~NICE
This is a great piece of cream toned crockery. I'm downsizing my crocks and jugs which I have had since the 70's and boy this jug was well cared for long before me. It stands 11 inches tall with a base of 7 iches in diameter. It has a very nice sheen. There are some manufacturing blurbs. No cracks and only one man-made tiny chip on the bottom rim. Old Crockery Boot Leg Jug Stoneware Bottle Clay Folk Art Pottery Jug COOL!!
Up for auction is a very Old American Clay Pottery Jug. I know nothing about Old American Jugs. I think it looks like a Boot Leg bottle. A friend looked at them and I will tell you what he told me. He said that it has an applied handle-you can see the thumb print where it attached to the jug. It is pre 1900 and it is very crude. You can see all of the imperfections under the glaze. Globs of clay, and gouges out of the clay, star hairlines, all under the glaze. You can tell that this is hand thrown. It is so crudely finished. The base is not glazed, it has a nipple in the center with some chips on the edge of the base. Please look at the pictures, they are a very important part of the description. This jug is just under 10 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across at the base, 1 1/2 inches across at the mouth and 18 3/4 around. This Jugs color is really ... moreinbetween the light and dark colors on listing, more of a medium in color. the lighter in color. The 2 colors that are in the pictures are from the flash. This jug is in very good antique condition and is very heavy. It has some chips as stated it the description and otherwise I can fint no other issues. I am listing another jug.
