Which makes it impossible to pour or drink the contents. In fact, the jug is made with a hollow handle and a hollow ring around the neck, typically fitted with two or three spouts. The idea is that the contents can be sucked up through the handle and drunk from one of the spouts by covering the others with your fingers. However, this might be a little too obvious, so the potters typically included at least one additional small hole, usually up underneath the handle, which also had to be covered before drinking. Hi. I'm listing a vintage puzzle jug. I've only found one like this and I used the copy from google images. You will see the exact duplicate in the photos. I haven't any clue as to how old this might be, I bought it at a vintage shop about 12 years ago. The google image actually has the picture and the text, however it hasn't any information about where and when it was made either.The copy of the jug is exactly the right depiction. I take most of my pics. at night and have to use my flash and it just isn't the same as natural lighting. It's in relatively nice condition, there are a few small marks, as I've noted in the pics. The middle portion with the text has a sand like texture to it. The vessel, as google addresses it: is approx. 8 1/2" H& it is approx. 17" around the largest portion. A glazed. Two-tone Puzzle Jug, unmarked but likely English; the applied sprigs around the midsection are consistent with those from the Doulton Lambeth pottery. There are five scenes; three depicting drinking and general merriment, a windmill and a tree. Vintage 19th Cenutry puzzle jug England
19th Century Puzzle Jug from England. Jug is 6.75 X 5.00 inch's. Weight is 896 grams. Other then noted miner damage. Jug is in beautiful condition Had this apprised in 1987-1988 at the Mendel Gallery in Saskatoon Sask. By Sotheby's. Was told that it was made in England between about 1815-1840. Was told if it was not for the minor damage, he would expect it to fetch between $1200 and $1600(LATE1980 PRICES) Because of the miner damage he said this piece is still worth $600-$800(LATE 1980 PRICES) He said to find a Puzzle Jug of such primitive design is rare, and makes this a very hard piece to find. 800x600 Extraordinary Polychrome Pictorial Puzzle Jug HARLEQUIN& COCK FIGHT BOYS DRINK and be MERRY Elsmore& Forster Staffordshire England c.1860 This is an irresistible transfer printed ironstone puzzle jug. Probably made originally as a presentation piece at a local tavern. It stands 8-3/4” tall, 6-1/2” wide at widest point. Transfer printed in black with hand-painted brilliant high enamel color palette and gilt rims. It was made by the Staffordshire England ironstone firm of Elsmore and Foster. Clayhills Pottery, Tunstall, which operated between 1853 and 1871. These puzzle jugs and related barware accessories were wildly popular in pubs and gambling establishments. This puzzle jug has a hole in the handle connected through an inner tube to a hole in the bottom.
