Early 1900's R.H. Macy's & Co New York Brown/ White Stoneware Jug
For sale is a circa early 1900's R.H. MACY'S NEW YORK stoneware jug. The Jug is Brown on the top and White on the bottom. It measures approximately 101/2" in height and 7" in width. The pottery has a glaze finish. There are two small chips at the top portion of the jug opening as well as a small glaze line in the same area. there is also a 2/1/2" brown line which I cannot identify in the white part of the jug. Up for your consideration is this beautiful Stoneware Crock Jug made by New York Stoneware Co Fort Edwards N.Y. New York Stoneware operated in Fort Edwards from 1861-1891 as seen on the front of the jug stamped. This is a good way to date NY Stoneware. If it is stamped Ft Edwards you can figure out it is a great 19th century piece. This jug is a 2 gallon and has the amazing Cobalt Blue Bird so beautifully displayed on the front that has not one piece of imperfections. There are some rub marks on the right hand side of the crock from being stored up against another. But there are NO CRACKS no HAIRLINES to speak of. It has never been broken or repaired. This is the REAL DEAL and i do not have a reserve on this crock. 3 gallon Blue decorated jug made by NEW STONEWARE CO. in the 19th Century. On the front of the jug it's stamp 3 for the size of the piece along with the makers stamp. Fort Howard New York" I believe the cobalt design is an abstract flowers. The jug is in good condition. But there are some flaws. First, this was at one time converted to use as a lamp and I removed a rubber and metal contraption that was used to hold the socket. You can see there is still some red on the inside of the spout from the rubber substance. What is left is just color, there is ... moreno dimension to it. It will take more cleaning to get rid of it completely. You can also see in the pictures that there are a few nicks around the spout. There are imperfections in the glaze with spots and little holes, perhaps from using salt in the manufacturing process. There is one green glaze drip to the right of the letters and below that, a spider hairline that could be a manufacturing flaw or the result of a bump. In another picture, I point out a line that looks like a manufacturing flaw to me. Halfway down one side there are two flaws that occurred during production when something touched the jug. In the top area, some clay pulled away. In the bottom spot, a piece of clay from the other piece was left. Finally, there is a chip and a couple of tiny nicks along the bottom rim. more After listing all these flaws(please review and enlarge all the pictures) this jug still displays beautifully! Please note that there is more beige color in the back than the front. There is no size marking on the jug, but I would guess it to be about one and a half gallons. Denby Pottery of England and is also stamped"T. Davids Co New York" The Thaddeus Davids Co. was a big New York ink retailer in the mid to late 1800s. I believe. But am not certain, that this is one of their ink bottles, made for them by Denby. The bottle stands approx. 9 1/4" high and is about 3 1/2" in diameter at the base. It is in very good to excellent condition. With no chips or cracks. There are some bumps. Dips, rough places, etc. on the bottle surface, under the glazing, obviously present at the time of manufacture. I think this is a fairly uncommon bottle. Antique Stoneware Advertising Jug. Charles& Co, New York" in SCRIPT, Brown& Tan Whiskey, EXC 8.25" Tall X 5.25" Bottom/underside diameter. 1 GALLON. Maker Unknown. Excellent Antique Condition. A couple of glaze skips. Crazing comensurate with age. One very small chip along the outside of the mouthpiece(see listing and photos please for greater detail) Script is clear and bright; shows almost no wear. 2 Glaze skips. Both about the size of the one pictured. Crazing is most notable on the bottom 1/3 of the jug as well as on the underside. One very small. Shallow chip along the outside rim of the mouthpiece(approx. 1/8" Any slight chips on the underside are under the glaze coat. 1/2" cut mark" under the glaze coat along the side brown area(see photo) I was able to find a"Charles& Co. Here for your consideration is an antique 1890's BASS& Co's BARLEY WINE Stoneware Jug. The double handle jug stands over 9 1/2" tall and app. 3 1/4" across its widest point. There are a few light chips at the base. Picture#6. There is some wonderful light antique crazing through-out. To the gloss finish. Really gives it that"Antique Look" to the jug. This jug is in Excellent Condition with 1 chip to the base at the rim. 2 surface secure lines at the handle, the top one goes all the way around, and 2 very small chips to the top outer spout rim. There are no other chips, cracks, and or repairs. There is slight manufactured roughness with some slight buildup of salt glaze at the top below the spout and on the top of the handle. 5 Gallon Whiskey Stoneware Jug WEST SHORE WINE & LIQUOR CO. NEW YORK pre 1910
Here is a nice old 5 gallon whiskey jug from a North Carolina estate. It is from the turn of the century from what I can find online about the company. The owner seemed to be sued a lot for not fulfilling orders and promises. I've been able to connect him to the beginning of Canadian Club and a few other huge whisky names. The crock is in decent shape for being over a hundred years old. It has a few notable chips and it has crazing throughout. There is a mark on the back that I can't tell if it's a scratch or crack. New York Stoneware Co 12"x7" Stoneware Jug - Great Cond&Markings
I have been trying to get to some good auctions the last couple of weeks here in history rich southern New England to freshen up the shop inventory for your shopping pleasure. This is a very nice piece of Stoneware and I want to say it is 1 1/2 gal for it sure looks bigger than 1 gallon. It is all nicely marked from Fort Edwards NY and the blue is nice and vibrant. Anyway I scored six nice stoneware pcs and will get them all in the shop and they are all from one gentleman's collection and I only wish knew more about stoneware and had more $$$ with me the other day because this as one great collection. It measures the mentioned 12" tall x about 7" wide and is in perfect collectable condition. I tried to picture it well to both show it off. Do most of the talking to hopefully answer some questions.
