Vintage Commemorative Firemen's 2 Tone brown & Tan Glazed Whiskey-Moonshine Jug.
Hi and welcome to All In All Thrift. For your consideration we have a gorgeous Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 Dept 6 Stoneware Whiskey- Moonshine jug. That is approximately 2 pints and measures at 7 inches tall and about 4 inches wide. It was made in Monroe. N.Y. This commemorative jug was for a" Wet Down" of 2 of the departments new fire trucks back in 1987. It has the name Claude on the bottom which I believe must have been a member of the department. It also says Twin 1500GPM Pierce Pumpers. August 22, 1987. Underneath the Jug is Monroe Mugs, Monroe, N.Y and the telephone number and USA molded in. A"wet-down" is a ritual celebrated ... moreby many fire departments in the United States in which firefighters commission a new fire apparatus by anointing it with water sprayed from the retiring pumpers39;s tank water or from a neighboring firehouse's apparatus. The ritual dates back to the late 1800's when horse drawn pumpers were used throughout the nation's Fire Service. Fire departments continue to celebrate this tradition with the help of a driver in the seat and the company's transmission in reverse. After being wet-down and blessed. The company is slowly rolled backward into the bay while firefighters assist by pushing upfront. This wonderful item being offered is an old. 1 gallon moonshine jug with thumb handle. This nice piece of glazed pottery is almost 12 inches tall and 7 inches wide at the bottom, and weighs almost 6 pounds. This old jug is in good condition. The jug does show wear with scuff marks, dings, etc. and has a few chips on the side of the jug(see last photo) Please look at photos carefully. This listing is for a traditional shaped Jug. It has traditional colors of Americana Jugs Used to Store Liquids. The Letters USA are stamped into the bottom of the Jug. The Jug is 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. The Jug weighs just under 1 pound. The cork is broken. I will also include another used cork. It is not quite the right size but will work or you can get a new cork at a craft or hardware store There is some crazing on the bottom, it does not come through the finish. I found this in my Grandfather's Collection. It has been stored in his attic for years. I think it is a whiskey/moonshiner jug. As far as I know it's an antique and because of that. It isn't 100% perfect. It has some flaws as shown. Please use your own judgement as you view the pictures. I tried to upload many different views. It has some wear. And what appears to be chips or nicks on the body of the jug. I cleaned the outside before I listed it, but the inside might need some more cleaning, not sure. Please view all 12 pictures for more details on the condition. Top part looks like it was glazed because it has a nice shine to it. Some camera flash glare shown in the pictures though.
