Good luck, and be sure to check my other Auctions ending shortly. Thanks. Some brief information on Puzzle Jugs follows: The defining feature of a puzzle jug is its pierced neck. Which makes it impossible to pour or drink the contents. In fact, the jug is made with a hollow handle and a hollow ring around the neck, typically fitted with two or three spouts. The idea is that the contents can be sucked up through the handle and drunk from one of the spouts by covering the others with your fingers. However, this might be a little too obvious, so the potters typically included at least one additional small hole, usually up underneath the handle, which also had to be covered before drinking. Large marked Davenport hunt jug from 1810-1825 (stapled handle)
We are listing this very large antique Davenport hunt jug- it is 7 inches tall and a whopping 10 inches at its widest point. It has the Davenport name over an anchor symbol impressed on the bottom. Indicating it was made between 1810 and 1825. It is difficult to find these large old hunt jugs and it is a striking display piece, with its well-sprigged hunt scenes and acorns& leaves border. However, note that it is discolored on the inside and the base, and there are two cracks on the handle(which is stable) One of the repairs was done in the early 1800s, since it employs two metal staples(the high-tech repair method of that period) See the close-up pictures for details. Antique 1850 - 1899 Doulton named saltglaze stoneware sprigged hunt jug
We are listing this mid to late 1800s saltglaze stoneware jug sprigged hunt jug marked on the front with the impressed name J. Chapman. The jug is only marked on the bottom with an impressed letter A. But the terminal of the handle is the standard one that Doulton used from the mid to late 1800s(see the close up picture) The jug is almost 5.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches at its widest point. In addition to the stag hunt sprigs around the bottom, it has the toby, smoker, drinker, tree and windmill sprigs typical of Doulton hunt jugs of the period. The jug displays well(and named ones are fairly hard to come by) but it does have its flaws. There is a hairline crack running across the bottom of the handle above the terminal, a small piece of sprigging missing off the end of a windmill blade, a repaired area on one side of the rim, and a y hairline ... moreon the bottom that then turns into another y hairline up the front with another thin hairline near that(see all the closeup pictures) All this sounds horrible, but the jug is quite sound and you can only see the flaws when you are close up. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada. Shipping to the United Kingdom and Canada will be charged at cost. Payment must be made by Paypal within three days of the auction ending. Be sure to check out our other current and upcoming auctions of hundreds of antique and vintage objects in glass. Large early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed and sprigged stoneware hunt jug
We are listing this large early 1800s Georgian blue and white glazed and sprigged hunt jug. In addition to the standard hunt scene sprigs which encircle the jug. There is also a beaded band below the rim, and three beaded bands below the sprigging. The base on this jug is unusually large, which is sometimes seen on jugs used at sea(for obvious reasons, with the shipboard hazards 200 years ago) The jug is 6 inches tall, 8 inches at its widest point, and displays well. There are hairlines at the bottom of the spout and down one side of the spout(and that one carries through to the inside as well) several separation lines and small losses on the sprigging, and some crackling to the glaze(mostly on the bottom) Still this is a pretty and impressive old jug- please view the close up pictures and judge for yourself. Interesting 1815-1835 Georgian hunt jug w/serpent handle & spout - Chrysanthemum
We are listing this interesting looking Georgian sprigged stoneware hunt jug made in the 1815-1835 period by the pottery known as the Chrysanthemum Factory. It is marked on the bottom with a raised white chrysanthemum pad with the number 20 impressed in the middle of it. You can see a similar Chrysanthemum#20 jug pictured and described on page 104 of An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs. This jug has a strainer inside the typical Chrysanthemum serpent spout. An intertwined serpent tails handle, sprigged hunt scenes all around the body, and engine turning above the base. It is 5.5 inches tall, almost 8 inches at its widest point, and in good condition for its age. There are the usual separation lines and discolorations on the sprigging, and slight rubbing on the top rim and the mouth of the spout. Please view the close up pictures and judge ... morefor yourself. To my knowledge, no one has ever been able to identify the actual maker of the Chrysanthemum Factory jugs- most of which incorporated this unusual spout and handle. Cute little early 1800s Georgian blue & white glazed stoneware hunt-sprigged jug
We are listing this tiny little early 1800s Georgian blue and white glazed stoneware jug. Which is sprigged all around with a hunting scene. Although the jug is unmarked, the sprigging is quite well done, as is the engine turned banding above the base- indicating this was from one of the better potteries of that period. The jug is less than 3 inches tall, less than 4 inches at its widest point, and in very good condition. The handle is slightly out of line, there are the usual separation lines on some of the sprigs and the side of the spout, and there are two tiny glaze pops inside the spout- but none of this negatively affects the look of this cute little 200 year old piece. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. We can currently only accept bids on this from the United States. The United Kingdom, and Canada.
