Buckeye Pottery Company 3 Gallon Antique Stoneware Jug, (late 1800s-early 1900s)
Joseph Pech along with his sons W. J. and Frank established the Buckeye Pottery in Macomb in 1882. Pech. Born in Bohemia on June 15, 1827, apprenticed for 12 years as a potter in Vienna, Austria. Buckeye Pottery was located on Carroll Street. Near the railroad. At the peak of its production. The company employed 20 individuals. The clay came primarily from Macomb County. Wares were marketed to Illinois. Nebraska, Iowa, and other western states. In 1939. Haeger Company purchased Buckeye Pottery and used the pottery to manufacture Haeger floral artware. Offering great antique stoneware jug that has a nice cobalt blue stamp on the front indicating it was made by Buckeye Pottery Company located in Macomb. Illinois. Up for auction is this very impressive 3 gallon Red Wing jug. Believed to be Redwing. Redwing was known for their target with tail designs, use of turkey droppings and their beehive shapes. You can see examples of this in Warmon’s Red Wing Pottery. Identification and price guide byb Mark F Moran As i s with all antiques. Especially Stoneware, there will be flaws. Most are because people don’t treat them right, but there are some factory flaws. This jug sat in my bedroom for years and was treated with care. Now I will list the factory flaws for you. There is one Factory flaw in the handle meeting the spout. The turkey dropping is inside the flaw showing it was done in the firing. Another factory flaw around the neck. Again the turkey droppings are over the flaw indicating that this was done in the making of the jug. Slight separation on the ... morehandle where it meets the jug also done in the firing process. Some blistering on the cobalt blue decoration. EXTRA LARGE 3 GALLON OVOID JUG STONEWARE BLUE DECORATION ANTIQUE AS OFFERED
This large antique ovoid jug was acquired at a New Hampshire estate sale a short while ago. It is a beautiful jug with blue on it and these large specimens of ovoid shape are getting really hard to find. Unfortunately. This jug has received some abuse and there are cracks throughout and two small chips on the bottle mouth. Look carefully at the pictures to make sure these are defects that you can live with-still, this jug is very impressive. The cracks start at the top(two of them)one goes through the blue decoration and splits in two and then travel about. In the blue area, you can clearly see the number 3 stamped. There is also a weak name stamp but the only letters I can make out are" ANNGE. The backside crack runs alongside the handle and down and then crosses over under it. This all being said, the cracks are still quite tight but ... moreI would not be swinging it around by its handle-best to pick this up by its bottom. There is a chip on the bottom and as you can see there are felt circles to protect surfaces. There are several flaws in the glaze and a couple of kiln"bumps" all made in the jug's production. It measures about 15" tall. While I make every effort to give an accurate description. Rare Antique 3 gallon blue salt glaze jug crock pitcher
You are bidding on a very large crock or jug. It does have a handle and I believe it's a 3 gallon because it sits tall on the floor. Almost 2 feet tall. This jug is a base color of a more grey than tan as it looks in the photo and has blue markings on it. The markings look like a bug and a signature but I have been unable to identify it without a doubt so I am not listing it as any particular kind. As far as condition there are a few chips and cracks along it. As well as a bubble in the glaze which shows up as a brown knot. You can see the chip on the photo. Up for sale is a wonderful Huge 3 Gallon Antique Stoneware Jug/ Crock. It measures 16 3/4" tall by 9 1/2" wide across the base and weighs 14lbs. This Jug does have a very thin hairline from the bottom edge to the brown section were it starts to taper up to the spout. It is a thin hairline and still holds fluids nicely. also there is a small chip to the right of the bottom hairline otherwise the condition is great. it has the big finger hole on the top but this jug would be a challenge to throw over your shoulder. Its huge! It would make a great decorating item, it has the number 3 with a flower on each side of the number but no makers name that I can find. Old Cobalt ? 3 Gallon Stoneware ? Beehive Salt Glaze ? Crock Jug
I know NOTHING about stoneware. In fact. I don't even know if it qualifies as stoneware, but here goes- 14 1/4 inches high with a 10 inch diameter bottom. There are no markings on the jug except the number 3(three) in blue and I assume that to be the volume of the jug- although the more I look at it, I'm thinking it could be the letter B. There is a definite crack in the finger handle and that is all there appears to be- doesn't look like it ever broke off- shows no sign of repair. It has been in our possession at least 40 years- it was purchased in Washington state(Spokane, if I remember correctly) but we have the place for sale and will be moving into a ground floor apartment with no outbuildings so it must go. Of particular interest is the brown"mottling" on the top and handle- we've never attempted to clean it ... moreso we have no idea if it will come off- original plug never been out. Decorated 3 Gallon Jug Stoneware A.J. Buttler New Brunswick NJ Antique 1860's
This auction is for a 3 gallon stoneware jug with salt glaze finish made by hand by the A.J. Buttler Manufacturer in New Brunswick. NJ, circa 1860, before the U.S. Civil War. The maker's mark imprint on the jug has a misspelling; it reads as follows: A.J, BUTTLER, MANUFACTERUR NEW-BRUNSWICK. NJ The maker's mark imprints are deep on the first and second lines but the third line is faded and doesn't appear to have been embossed well at all. This is a 3 gallon jug as evidenced by the large. Cobalt blue#3 won the front. There are also brushed cobalt blue"floral or leaf" designs along each side and below the 3, as well as around the front of the bottle's neck directly above the imprinted words. The jug is in excellent condition. There is a blob of blue glazing on the bottom design and I also noticed a tiny"hole" ... moredoesn't go all the way through) that looks as though it happened in the manufacturing process as there is cobalt blue glaze alongside it. There are also two smallish nicks toward the jug's bottom. Below the far left design. The color of the jug is primarily light brown. With a gradual deepening of the color towards the base. The jug itself weighs nearly 10 lbs and stands about 12" tall; it is 39" in diameter at the widest point and about 36" at the base. I will ship this out to the winning bidder via UPS ground. Rare Antique 1800's 3 Gallon Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug This is a rare opportunity to own a very old 3 Gallon salt glazed stoneware handled jug with a wide mouth in a very dark brown. I'm estimating 1800's. But it may be older-look at the pictures and judge for yourself. It has a primitive"3" near the top. No other marks. The top is slightly darker than the bottom. 14-1/2 inches high and has a 9-1/2" diameter. The mouth is almost 4" across. Condition: Very good given it's age. Handle is intact and solid. No chips around the mouth and only minor chips around the top edge of the body. The top has some lighter color in a very few small spots-may be paint drips or an old attempt to touch it up. Regardless, it only adds to the patina of the jug. The bottom has some damage as can be seen from the last 3 photos, ... morebut it appears to be age related. There is the start of a hairline crack near the bottom, but the jug appears to be solid and should be around for a very long time-see last photo. See high resolution photos for more! This is a great old jug and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's home! IL at Western Stoneware, which succeded Monmouth Pottery in 1906, when several area potteries merged. The brown top is intact but the rest of the jug really shows its age. You are Viewing an Antique Stoneware 2 Gallon#3 Beehive Jug/Crock Measuring Approximately 15 1/2" Tall and has a Diameter of 8 1/2" Color is a variegated Khaki tan/ brown and the jug has a nice salt glaze. Condition: Overall good with a horizontal crack that encircles all but 3" of crock~but it has not broken thru. Also. There are 2 vertical hairline cracks meeting or crossing thru the horizontal crack, small crack near bottom, and some manufacturing misses. Please review all photos carefully. Even in this condition. This jug is a great find makes a great decor item! Also. Makes an awesome garden piece when half buried on it's side! A rare and hard to find 3-gallon stoneware jug with great cobalt blue bird decoration made in the 1880s in Peabody. MA, ca by C. F. Worthen. Unfortunately this piece is compromised with a crack that goes down the side and well into the base. Still a great piece for display and priced accordingly.
