RARE Pre-Civil War (1859) T & R Boote White Ironstone "Atlantic-C" Ewer/Pitcher
RARER Than RARE! Pre-Civil War(1859) T& R Boote White Ironstone Ewer/Pitcher"Atlantic-C" Pattern Although it is difficult to see in the photograph with this listing. The back stamp on the base of the 7" tall"Atlantic-C Shape" ewer identifies it as the Burslem, Staffordshire, England Company T& R Boote's"Atlantic-C Shape" pattern, a pattern that was produced in 1857, 1858 and early 1859. Authenticating information and photograph of this rare ewer can be found on page 7, Vol. 17.4 of the White Ironstone Association's Notes, Spring, 2011. See"harmonicaguy" with White Ironstone Association's Spring Notes on Internet. The Atlantic"C" Shape(variety) was registered by the Bootes on March 21. 1859. They registered this Shape at least four other times, which are listed in the ... morePlate Book on page 44. A complete display of the Atlantic variations can be found in Volume 13, No. 2 of White Ironstone"Notes. According to the journal, White Ironstone Notes' Fall 2006, Vol 13 No 2) on April 17, 1857, T&R(Thomas& Richard) Boote patent registered a new design, Atlantic Shape. There are four other known Atlantic Shape registry dates. April 22, 1858, Dec.8, 1858, March 21,1859, and March 29,1859" see White Ironstone"Notes" p.7, Vol. 17.4, Spring 2011) The Journal explains that it is rare to find examples of the"Atlantic Shape-C" in the U.S.and speculates that few of these pieces were sent to or sold in the U.S. because they would have entered the market at the time of the Civil War when exports were perhaps impeded by the conflict. The Bootes had three potworks in Burslem: Kiln Croft Works(1835- 1864) Central Pottery(1842- 1870) and Waterloo Works(1850- 1863) They were known for gleaming white high quality ironstone and also for inventions that improved production in later years they were primarily tile makers. Ironstone china was first made in 1813. It gained its greatest popularity during the mid-nineteenth century. T
