English Staffordshire or Sunderland Pearlware Pink Lustre Pitcher c1820 ~ Sailors Farewell Jug ~ Black Transferware Illustration and Flowers ~ 6" high ~ about 7 1/2" from spout to handle An antique English porcelain bulbous pitcher with the Sailors Farewell illustration and verses. The transfers of the poems were not carefully applied and the letters appear cut off in places but this is all in the making. The main illustration shows the wife and children leaving the sailor with the ship in the distance, the other side of the jug has a verse'I envy no one's birth or fame' surrounded by a flower border. The rim and spout is painted with pink lustre and the pink lustre was painted throughout in squiggles. In overall excellent condition; there is no major damage to the piece but there is some beige staining to the pottery(probably ... morean over burn? mostly around the middle that fades to the bottom. This could be professionally cleaned to appear all white again but even as is. It has a very attractive display. The handle and spout are fine and except for around the top rim, the lustre is remarkably intact. There is one chip under the footrim that isn't seen when upright. Below. The chip under the footrim falls just under the handle, as you can see above it is hardly noticeable standing upright. Thanks for looking. No Reserve! THE SAILORS TEAR ON ONE SIDE AND"THOU NOBLE BARK OF BRIGHTEST FLAME" ON THE OTHER. EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR IT'S AGE. SEE CONDITION REPORT. APPROXIMATELY 8" high by 10" spout to handle by 6-1/2" widest diameter. This type of jug was one of the most important household utensils during the 18th and and early 19th century and was often the most common dedicated gift. Staffordshire Sunderland Pink Lustre Milk Jug Pitcher c1860 ~ THE FAIRY OF THE SEA ~ Three Mast Ship Print and Verse ~ Almost 6" high to top of handle ~ 7 1/2" from spout to handle A similar jug with the same inscription was attributed to the William Ball of Deptford. Sunderland pottery, 1857- 1920s. This is a much thicker ironstone type of pottery than the usual thin pearlware type of 1820s but still very attractive. The verse reads: THERE'S A FRIGATE ON THE WATERS, FIT FOR BATTLE. STORM, OR FUN, SHE DANCES LIKE A LIFE BOAT, THOUGH SHE CARRIES FLAG AND GUN, WHAT'ER MAY TRY. SHE'LL STAND THE TEST, THE BRAVE. We are offering in this listing an attractive& impressive Sunderland lustre English soft paste china pitcher(or jug) We are estimating that this pitcher/jug was made circa 1820's-1840's. The pitcher/jug measures 9 1/2 inches across the handle& spout by 7 inches tall. The top to the outside of the rim from left to right measures 5 3/16 inches& the base diameter is 4 5/8 inches. The pitcher/jug has a transfer decoration with lots of vibrant hand painted color details of Sunderland Bridge. The span of the bridge is mentioned on the pitcher as 236 feet& the height is mentioned as 100 feet. The other side has a transfer scene of a sailing ship. There is no name to indicate the specific ship shown. This scene is also hand painted with vibrant& exciting colors. Under the spout there is a transfer of a wreath comprised ... moreof leaves& flowers with a small sailing ship at the top. The details of the wreath& the surrounding areas are vibrantly hand painted with assorted colors. Also under the spout is the following wording: The man doom'd to sail With the blast of the gale Through billows alantic to steer As he bends oe'r the wave Which may soon be his grave Remembers his home with a tear" There is minor wear to the wording but the wording is easily readable. The pitcher/jug is extremely colorful& the colors are fresh. Bright, vibrant& visually compelling. All of the colors are of optimum intensity. This is truly a visually exceptional& exciting example of Sunderland lustre! There is some minor age wear to the luster& the hand painted decorations. This is mostly at the top rim with only tiny specks of wear here& there on other areas. There are no scratches& there are no points where the glaze shows obvious wear. There is an old repair to the left side exterior area of the spout. There is no damage or any sign of any repair or any chipping or any crack on the inside of the spout. So. Hunter, dogs and deer. Pitcher measures about 6 3/8" tall and about 7 3/4" wide from handle to spout. It is in excellent condition overall with no chips or cracks except for a small firing separation just above the handle, done in the making(see last photo) There are other minor irregularities in the making. There is a shallow glaze flake to the edge of the handle slightly over 1/8" long. There is some wear to lustre trim and some flaking to green color of"grass" There is some crazing in ... moreplaces and a few craze lines are slightly darkened. There is a small bump of unglazed ceramic inside bottom, done in the making. There are some darkened craze lines on the base. There is a small grayish smudge just in front of man's hat on one side.
