The design is engraved on a copper plate, from which prints ... moreare taken on paper; these prints are then pressed on to the ware. It is then protected by a glaze. Most lustre ware is unmarked.

Staffordshire Sunderland Pink Lustre Jug ~ THE FAIRY OF THE SEA ~ c1860 NR
Staffordshire Sunderland Pink Lustre Milk Jug Pitcher c1860 ~ THE FAIRY OF THE SEA ~ Three Mast Ship Print and Verse ~ Almost 6" high to top of handle ~ 7 1/2" from spout to handle A similar jug with the same inscription was attributed to the William Ball of Deptford. Sunderland pottery, 1857- 1920s. This is a much thicker ironstone type of pottery than the usual thin pearlware type of 1820s but still very attractive. The verse reads: THERE'S A FRIGATE ON THE WATERS, FIT FOR BATTLE. STORM, OR FUN, SHE DANCES LIKE A LIFE BOAT, THOUGH SHE CARRIES FLAG AND GUN, WHAT'ER MAY TRY. SHE'LL STAND THE TEST, THE BRAVE. THE STAUNCH THE FREE, SHE BEARS A NAME OF STAINLESS FAME, THE FAIRY OF THE SEA. In excellent display condition; there is a small chip under the rim of the spout. A patch of gritty glaze by the ship and overall crazing ... moreto the glaze. Thanks for looking! No Reserve! There is all over fine crazing commensurate with age and resultant mild discoloration to the interior. The maroon glaze has flaked off due to over eager cleaning. Not bad for this lvoely 160+ year old pitcher. A lovely addition for the collector of Staffordshire or Lustre. Large Staffordshire Copper Lustre Jug ~'FANCY' PAINTED DECORATION ~ c1840 NR
A Large English Pottery Staffordshire Copper Lustre Baluster Jug c1840 ~'Fancy' Five Color Folk Art Type Painted Decoration ~ 7 1/2" high ~ 9 1/2" across from handle to spout I can't help thinking this jug should have been used in Sumpter T. Priddy's book'American Fancy: Exuberance in the Arts. 1790-1840 because it has all the characteristics of'exuberant' decoration. It has the same spirit of painting that much mochaware was decorated with and this shape and size pitcher was also used on much mocha. I'm not sure the pink used here for the dots around the center was a sort of dusty rose pink or brighter; if it was brighter, the pigment has faded, which is sad as it doesn't stand out as much as the other colors. In excellent display condition; there is wear to the lustre and decoration and some ... moreminor enamel flaking. There is also fine surface wear especially around the belly. See the pics for closeups of that, but there is no major damage or restoration; the inside bottom may have been repainted a long time ago as it is matte and not smooth but there is no damage to the base. Despite the points of surface wear this has fantastic presence and color. Thanks for looking! No Reserve! Please see the other English/ Historical Staffordshire/ porcelain/ pottery/ soft paste/ pearlware/ creamware I have listed. On Aug-04-14 at 11:05:08 PDT. Seller added the following information: Adding one more photo that may show the size of the jug better.

The piece is Staffordshire and a creamware, thinly potted jug with black transfer and silver lustre decoration. The transfer depicts an English country estate. The pitcher measures approximately 5.5" tall and 6.5" in diameter(spout to handle) The condition overall is quite good. The silver lustre is in good shape; the black transfer is faded and worn from years of use. There are no cracks. There is a small place on the table rim that I would not describe as a chip. But looks like it has been hit hard through the years(see pic) along with a tiny glaze flake. There is a flea bite on the end of the handle. Please note I ship only within the continental USA. Check out my other auctions if you like nice old things from ... morethe Mid-Atlantic Region. Thank you.
