L209 ENGLISH GEORGIAN EARTHENWARE 1860s UN-BANDED BLUE RING SPONGEWARE PITCHER
LOT# 209 Detailed Photos. Click to enlarge. Estate Road Show. Item Description. The Estate Road Show is proud to showcase this original 1860s to 1870s English Spongeware full sized 8.5 inch tankard pitcher. In an early plain Georgian style un-banded configuration, completed in a gorgeous blue finger ring hand Dabbed finish. This classic Georgian style buff clay rimmed bottom tankard is part of the second generation Victorian highly decorative Spongeware, which is generally considered between 1855& 1875, when hand Dabbing switched to the stick spatter application finish. The early to mid Victorian Scottish/ English molded serving pieces are few and far between. Furthermore, 90% + of the wares from that era were finished in one of the four disciplines exclusively, those being Brush Stroke, Spattering, Dabbing, or Sponge Spattering(Stick ... moreSpattering) please see the history below. Our special antique is strictly early hand Dabbing and is a truly valuable collectible. Research consulted: Spongeware 1835 to 1935 Makers Marks& patterns/ by Henry E. Kelly, Arnold& Dorothy E. Kowalsky; Spongeware& Spatterware 3rd Edition/ by Kevin McConnell Spongeware is a specific decorating discipline that although can be found as early as 1820, according to some historians, officially originated in Scotland ca. 1835. The technique was amenable to early earthen wares, but would also later apply to Ironstone, and English semi porcelain, which fostered a century long love affair with the finished products. Manufactured In the numerous factories of early Industrial-era England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales the art form was well received whenever it was discovered. The term Spongeware was strictly Scottish/ English in lineage, while the term Spatterware became first associated with, and then supplanted the Spongeware reference in America. This information is taken from the classic reference by Henry Kelly and Arnold and Dorothy Kowalsky, Spongeware 1835-1935. Spongeware or Spatterware was first recorded in Scotland ca. 1835, a

This"Gypsey" pitcher has sometimes been referred to as"The Witch Pitcher" because it has elaborate detailed images. Referred to by experts as'relief molded" of a woman wearing a pointed cap like a witch, stirring a large pot over a fire. She and a companion are deep in a forest, which is detailed with tree trunks, twisted branches, and leaves. The opposite side of the pitcher shows a family, also deep in a forest in a shelter. The father is watching over a young child and a woman caring for a baby. The family dog lies at her feet. The base of the pitcher is made up of twisted tree roots which wrap around and then swoop upward to form a large tree trunk in front which swells into the pitcher's spout. This spout is covered with finely detailed leaves and the pitcher gives the impression of a tree sheltering these two groups of people. There is a fi

Thoune(pronounced“toon” is a town in west-central Switzerland where many small potteries have operated for generations. Thoune pottery is often tin-glazed(also known as faience) earthenware decorated with edelweiss and other flowers. Johann Wanzenried was one of the best-known 19th-century potters in Thoune. And this pitcher bears his mark with its distinctive JW. In 1872, Wanzenried(1847-1895) followed his father as the owner of the family factory, so this item was made sometime between 1872 and 1895. It measures 6 1/2" high and 6 5/8" across the top of the handle to the end of the spout. The pitcher features incised multicolored floral and geometric designs on a blue background. Antique 1800-1849 Rockingham Yellow Ware Brown Earthenware Peacock Pitcher
Antique Rockingham Pottery Antique Rockingham Pottery(circa late 1800's) ~LARGE YELLOW WARE PITCHER/JUG- PEACOCK MOTIF~ 8& 1/4" tall; 6& 1/2 by 5" in diameter across top; 7& 1/4" from spout to handle; base about 6" in diameter; holds 64 ounces. Raised Relief Mold of Peacock and Tree Branch. Beaded upper and lower ring. Brick wall" design encircling the lower part of the pitcher with a column design running up to the spout. Yellowish under-glaze covered by dripping dark brown glaze. Magnificent design! Some history on this Rockingham Pitcher: Rockingham is highly-fired earthenware or stoneware. Generally with a buff to yellow paste and a brown mottled and streaked glaze, often characterized by patches of the vessel’s body showing through. Rockingham is generally not felt to be a specific ware type; ... morerather simply a type of glaze applied to yellow, buff or(rarely) white-bodied ceramics. Rockingham is typically characterized by relief molded decoration. Rockingham glazed vessels were inexpensive, mass-produced wares of the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, manufactured in both England and North America(Claney 2004:xiii) The original use of the term Rockingham can be traced back to the late eighteenth century in England. Around 1770, the Swinton Pottery developed a rich brown glaze for white earthenware that quickly became popular and eventually came to be known as“Rockingham” glaze(Cox and Cox 1983:108) The famous brown earthenware glaze discovered by the Rockingham pottery was imitated by many potteries and made its way across the Atlantic to be used on many decorative and utilitarian pieces from a variety of U.S. potteries, the most famous of which was at Bennington, Vermont. Excellent Antique Condition: No chips. Cracks, nicks or repairs that I have been able to detect; there is crazing that can be seen on the bottom interior and exterior.
