For This Auction A DARLING Jug/ Milk Pitcher"DYE KEN JOHN PEEL" CK5236 HUNTING PITCHER WITH FIGURAL FOX HOUND DOG HANDLE by Wedgwood Barlaston ENGLAND The pitcher measures 6" tall x 6-3/4" across from spout to handle It is 3" across the top and base PLEASE NOTE: the trim around the rim of the pitcher is perfect. In the photos it appears that some of the red trim is missing. But that is just due to the high gloss of the glaze reflecting the light. There is an interesting story behind the title of this Pitcher: John Peel was an Englishman in the 18-19th century who loved to hunt. A well know song was written about him titled: DYE KEN JOHN PEEL" The word"KEN" is translated ... moreas KNOW Note that the title of the song may also be rendered as" Do You Ken[know] John Peel" and"Do Ye Ken John Peel" The highlight of this beauty is the adorable FIGURAL HANDLE OF A HUNTING DOG It is beautifully hand painted in full color. Back-stamp reads: Wedgwood DYE KEN JOHN PEEL 1829 Barlaston. England" Hand painted mark"CK 5236 V" Impressed marks hard to read. The first verse and chorus of the song are the best known: D'ye ken John Peel with his coat so gay* D'ye ken John Peel at the break o' day? D'ye ken John Peel when he's far. Far a-way. With his hounds and his horn in the morning? Chorus For the sound of his horn brought me from my bed, And the cry of his hounds which he oftime led, Peel's"View. Halloo! could awaken the dead, Or the fox from his lair in the morning. Some believe the end of this line to be'grey' Due to the colour of his coat made from local Herdwick wool. Vintage Wedgwood Relief Pitcher "D'ye Ken John Peel" ND2109
Unusual Wedgwood pitcher commemorating John Peel. An English huntsman born in 1776. The words to the song"D'ye Ken John Peel" were written by his friend in the 19th century. Ken means'know' so the title means Do you know John Peel? Just for fun here are the words to the original song that I learned as a child: D'ye ken John Peel with his coat so gay* D'ye ken John Peel at the break o' day? D'ye ken John Peel when he's far. Far a-way. With his hounds and his horn in the morning? Chorus For the sound of his horn brought me from my bed, And the cry of his hounds which he oftime led, Peel's"View. Halloo! could awaken the dead, Or the fox from his lair in the morning. The pitcher is in very good condition having no chips. Cracks, crazing or discoloration. The green accent is particularly striking ... morewith the white hunting scene in relief. Dimensions: 5 1/4" tall x 6" from tip of spout to the outer edge of the handle. John Edwards Ironstone China Pitcher 1890/1900
History on John Edwards is very limited but to the best of my knowledge this pitcher was manufactured between 1890& 1900 prior to the establishment of John Edwards& Co. This John Edwards Ironstone China pitcher is in excellent used condition as you can see in the photos. In photo#6 on the handle(below the decorative animal? you will notice a flaw which I believe to be from the manufacturing/firing process which does not restrict/hinder the usefulness of this beautiful piece. There are no cracks. Crazing or unsightly stains. On the bottom next to John Edwards stamp is an imprint which I am unable to read or identify and I do not know if it even means anything but thought I would mention it. This beautiful collectable measures 9" to top of lip. 8" from top of lip to handle, 4 1/2" base and 5" deep at widest point. ... moreUse it everyday or just admire it. Please contact me with any questions or concerns prior to bidding. Thank you!

Excellent original condition- no chips or cracks. About John Maddock& Sons: John Maddock and Sons royal vitreous pottery is a well-known and highly sought after category of antique pottery. Produced by the John Maddock and Sons company. This pottery is known for its ornate designs and superior craftsmanship. Founded in 1842, it was known only as J. Maddock until 1855, when it became known as J. Maddock and Son. Then, in it 1870, it became ... moreknown as J. Maddock and Sons. Many of the manufacturer's seals on the pottery give the full name of the company, and it is accordingly possible to date early J. Maddock pieces by the name used on the official seal. Production of original J. Maddock and Sons royal pottery continued until the mid-1960s. John Maddock began producing fine china under his family name in the town of Burselm in 1842. He had previously produced graniteware for export to the United States with other partners. The fine china produced by this firm quickly became noted for its intricate floral designs and its delicate appearance. Well-known production lines and styles include the"Majestic" and"Bombay" patterns that some consider the most exemplary of this firm's pottery. All of the pottery produced by this firm has distinct markings that make it possible to date and identify each piece. There are several markers which make it possible to narrow the time period down. It was not until 1906 that the firm began placing the words" CO" beside J. Maddock and Sons. If any piece has" CO" following the name of the company. It is possible to deduce that the piece was
