7.75" pitcher, Stoneware, Gothic Details Relief, Charles Meigh, circa 1844
Size 7.75" hgih. White salt glaze, Here we have a very old stoneware jug with high relief gothic details made by Charles Meigh of Staffordshire England in the year 1844. The handle has a factory flaw on the bottom where it connects to the body. It looks like it has separated a little, other side is fine, see pictures of both sides) At the top of the handle there is a stress crack, the handle connects in a V only one side has the crack( see both pictures) Over all I would say the jug is in very good condition especially being that it is one hundred and seventy years old. A very nice crisply molded example of the'Bacchanalian Dance' jug by Charles Meigh in excellent condition with no damage and an intact lid. The pitcher measures 7 3/4 inches to the lip of the rim and 8 1/2 inches to the tip of the finial on the metal lid. The body is a buff or drab colored stoneware and it has an attractive applied mark dated Sept. 30. 1844. This item is from a significant collection of British stoneware and parian relief molded jugs that I will be selling over the next few months. Up for auction is a"Orgy of Bacchus" of"Bacchanalian" stoneware jug with a hinged lid made by Charles Meigh& Son. Old Hall Pottery, Hanley, England. Meigh has created in relief two paintings by the 17th century masters Nichoas Poussin and Perter Paul Rubens. Charles Meigh Manufacturers of earthenware at the Old Hall Pottery. Hanley. In 1835 he was the successor of his father. From 1850-51 he was in partnership under the name'Charles Meigh. Son& Pankhurst' From 1851 to March 1861 he traded under he name'Charles Meigh& Son' Subsequently he traded under the style'Old Hall Earthenware Co Ltd' I think this is a reproduction as all I can find is glue residue on the bottom where I believe held a label. The last picture is a manufactures flaw as it is smooth.
