I'm sure it is not. It has all of the correct look, but isn't heavy enough. It is almost light enough for a sterling piece, but is just plate. I am pricing it accordingly. As for"issues" the worst thing I can say is that there is what I believe to be a pit in the silver inside the basket, hard to say, just looks really good overall. It sits squarely on its ball feet, unusual, as footed pieces are so often a bit off. I ship by FedEx and the post office. It appears to be definitely composed of multiple layers. You can actually see the layers on the bottom of the foot(last photo) It is a 10 panel basket with every other panel decorated. 4 of the 5 decorated panels and the inside center of the basket have various repousse scenes of birds. Trees, plants etc. embellished with very fine chasing and stippling. Extremely fine work. Antique Silverplate Cake Basket, Swing Handle, Paw Feet, Acanthus Leaves
Recently acquired is this elegant antique silverplate swing handle cake basket. With paw feet and acanthus leaves in an open area decorating the top part of the basket. The top edge of the basket has beading and on each end are shells and wing-like decorations. Measurements: the approximate height(to top of the handle) is 10” the length is 13” and the width is 9 1/2” It is unmarked, so I do not know the origin of where it was made or the exact time period of manufacture. The style of the basket seems to be American Empire/early Victorian with the broad paw feet and acanthus leaves. This cake basket came from a local estate and the family representative indicated this belonged to a grandmother of the family. Condition: the top surface of the basket is quite good. With a couple of tiny dings to the flat inside surface. On the wing-like decoration ... moreat the end of the basket, one of the“wings” is missing a small piece along its top edge(this could well be original to the piece, see photos) The swing handle works well. The surface of the underside has a slightly more grey color appearance– I am not sure if this is original or if perhaps there was some attempt to put a protective coating on it. One paw foot is bent upward(very slightly) so that it does not sit perfectly flat and it raised slightly. The underside of the paw feet show wear which is what is expected of an old piece of silver. This appears to be silver plate over brass as a brass color shows through in multiple areas. The floral design along the inside rim appears to have purposefully have the brass color showing through. A magnet does not stick to this item. The underneath rim as a mark of J C with a star between the two letters, and the number 855. This basket has no damage but could stand a good polishing. This superb piece features high-quality hand engraving throughout the bowl. The applied edge that is almost certainly sterling silver. This form is also referred to as a bride's basket. The top of the handle is engraved: E.I.F. to C.E.F. There is also an engraving along the bottom of the piece that reads: Presented to C.E. Fisk by his Aunt Mrs. Eunice I. Fisk who died March 21. 1852 as a token or remembrance. Based on this inscription, we assume that Mrs. Fisk left this piece to her nephew in her will. I reckon this an absolute stunner as a text book piece of Old Sheffield Plate from the late 18th century. The interior of the basket shows the hammer marks so it was worked on the old Sheild Plate principles of hammering out an ingot of silver annealed to copper. Height to top of the handle is 18 cm and the long side of the oval diameter is 15 cm. An elegant amount of bleeding of the copper and a vacant cartouche. Here is an antique Victorian silver plate swing handled bridal basket. This pierced or reticulated as well as molded and applied grape& leaf basket has all the bells and whistles of a Martin Hall made piece. This large 12 inch diameter basket. 9 inch tall to top of handle, and basket itself is 3 1/4 tall. Although its unmarked, the applied grape& leaf border is so intricately done, it was done by master craftsmen. Incredible relief to it. Weighing 1.13 lbs. this heavy piece looks so delicate, I tried photographing it in day light) There is an expert repair to the handle which is only visible on the underside of the handle. Opened her wedding gift and saw this tall Meriden Silverplate sparkling Compote Bride's Basket with the glittering engraved floral motif and the swing handle, she probably let out a little cry of delight. The amazing thing is that it still glitters much the same in 2014! An unusual antique BRIDAL or WEDDING BASKET(TAZZA) With a swing handle. I cannot find identifying markings of any kind, but it seems most likely that this is silverplate. The height of the bowl is about 4 inches, the diameter of the bowl is about 12 inches, and with the handle laid flat it is about 13 inches across. With the handle up the height is about 11 inches. The metal is deeply embossed(high relief) with figures of a variety of fruits and possibly nuts. I can see pears and grape clusters, but there are a lot of other things present. The decorations are very densely packed, with relatively flat surfaces only near the very center of the bowl. The handle is also highly decorated. The bowl sits on a 4 toed pedestal which is also decorated. I think it is likely the basket was made pre-1940 and certainly pre-1950. this is the mark for Eisenberg-Lozano inc. which was taken over by Kirk in 1970. wjhich dates it somewhere between 1953 and 1970. company was founded in 1953 they were importer& distributer of European& British made Silverplate. I am not positive but it sure looks like it says"INDIA" after the EL under the crown. is a good piece with no wear of plating swing handle with cutout ovals either side of a diamond. measures 3 3/4 to top of rim without the handle and 8" to top of handle is 6 1/2" dia.

Here we have today is a vintage 1920's Bernard Rice& sons silverplate swing handle basket#3985. This vintage piece is 5" tall from base to the top of the handle and the basket is 10 1/4" across. Basket is in vintage condition with pitting and silver loss to the top and bottom of the piece. The bottom is marked Apollo E.P.N.S. Bernard Rice& sons inc#3985.
