Antique Victorian Silverplate basket Middletown Hard White Metal Quadruple Plate
Up for auction is this Victorian silverplate basket from Middletown Plate Company. Marks on the bottom include Middletown Plate Co. Quadruple Plate with a set of scales in the center. Underneath are the numbers 1633 1/2. Under that is HARD WHITE METAL. The basket is about 9 3/4 inches across and almost 4 1/2 inches high. Not counting the handle. With the handle extended, it's about 11 inches high. The floral pattern appears cut into the metal. In the center is what looks like a monogram, but I can't be sure what it is. Around the edge of the basket is a pattern of continuous shields. The bottom is unmarked except for the markings indicated above. The basket has wear consistent with its age. There are a few small dents in the rim which are more evident when looking at the bottom. There is some pitting on the interior. I am not sure ... moreif there is a slight depression at the monogram. But I can feel it. I am not sure how well this basket will polish up. The item in this listing is from a collector who had vast areas of interest. He housed his collections in temperature controlled buildings allowing access to only a chosen few. He was retired from the U.S. Army and had served in World War II and the Korean War. He left us in 1997. And I am trying to help his wife find homes for his beloved things. I am not an expert on these items. So forgive me if my terminology is less than adequate. Before bidding. QUADRUPLEPLATE" and on the rim at the bottom are these numbers" 405-906-397" I think these numbers may have to do with the silverplate, but not sure. This is a heavy tray weighing approx. 2&1/2 lbs before packaging. 27" circumference, 13" hieght, base on 4 legs 17&1/2" around, handle is 20" around side to side.The designs are clear,large flower in center,raised design on top of handle,Lovely dropped design around edge of bowl, pedestal base is engraved with circles of flowers, the 4 feet have cut out designs that continue around the bottom of base. Middletown Bride's Bridal Wedding Basket, Quadruple Silverplate, Roman, Grecian
This is a silver plated bride's basket that we believe was made during the Victorian era by the Middletown Plate Company. This unusual piece is decorated with Roman/Grecian figures including gladiator or warriors. Palm fronds and flowers. The inside of the bowl has detailed etchings of flowers and leaves on four sides. The basket has a pedestal base which gives it a nice, elegant look. The basket is marked Quadruple Plate. A term most commonly used during the Victorian period. The maker's mark is Middletown Plate Co, who merged with International Silver in 1899. We believe this is an antique Victorian era bride's basket. This item is in good vintage condition with heavy tarnish that actually looks lovely on this piece. Middletown Quadruple Silverplate Brides Basket 1771 1899-1910
Estate auction find that was extremely tarnished. I polished it with Semichrome Polish and I think it will polish even more if you work on it. I wanted to make sure the plating wasn't worn off like some old pieces. It is in good shape except for a few dark flecks which will probably polish out and one spot underneath the basket that is either tarnished or worn off. The bail can be up or down. It measures 10" diameter. 7" tall or 14" to top of bail when it is up. Engraved on the bottom is a balance scale and Middletown Plate Co, Quadruple Plate, 1771, Hard White Metal. Antique Victorian era brides basket in very good condition with original glass basket that fits perfectly. It is approximately 12 inches tall x 10 inches wide. At widest point, handle of basket) The base of the silver plated basket is approximately 4.5 inches wide. The quadruple plated silver basket was made by the MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO. See mark in picture provided. I have included a bit of MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO. history below. There are also some numbers on the bottom of basket and part of the marking says, HARD WHITE METAL" I polished the basket prior to taking pictures so that you can see much of the silver is gone from years of polishing. But there remains a nice patina. The metal basket is sturdy and sits level. It has a beaded rope design with flowers and tassels on the handle. The base has flowers and what seems to be an Asian influenced ... moredesign. See pictures. The glass brides bowl is white with a teal color around the ruffled edge. When held up to the light the glass takes on a pearlescent look. See picture. It measures approximately 7 inches in diameter. It does have one barely noticeable chip in the glass. See pictures. Your eye is not immediately drawn to this and it does not detract from the beauty of the piece. This little basket is great to use for teas. Luncheons or dinners where it functions both as a decorative piece and a functional piece to hold berries, small cookies, or chocolates. MIDDLETOWN PLATE CO- Middletown CT business started in 1864.
