I can only speculate as to the purpose, and I feel it must have held a bowl or basket, such as a brides basket. the base has a ram, a baby sheep and a bird. around the top where the bowl would sit, are grapes and leaves. the base is like rocky ground. the best description is the photos, so please take your time and view the pictures. the piece is 7.5" tall and the top is about 6.5" wide. condition is wonderful. This fine antique Victorian circa 1880s large footed cake or brides basket by James W. Tufts of Boston. This large silverplate basket is ornately decorated with Birds and a Butterfly among the flowering branches and leaves. The entire interior of the basket is covered as pictured and has a gorgeous fluted edge. The basket stands on four ornate feet and has a fold down handle. This basket measures about 9 3/4" in diameter and stands 3" in height not including the ornate folding handle. With the handle extended the basket is 10" in height. The silver craftsmanship is excellent. There are no dings. Dents breaks or repairs, The quadruple plating is in very good condition and I see little ... moreif any losses. This is marked for James W. Tufts Quadruple Plate Boston pattern number 2741. I have lightly polished this piece to check for any silver loss or damage. The silverplating is still beautiful as this was always a cherished piece. The former owner had this piece engraved on the bottom for insurance purposes and to identify in case of theft. Any further polishing will be left to the new owner. The Jams W. Tufts company was founded in 1875 and was well known for producing a variety of different silver-plated items. This company was highly regarded for their very fine craftsmanship. This would make a fabulous center fruit bowl or can be used as intended back 130 years ago to serve pastries and cakes. Please view photos to further aid in description. Meriden Victorian Silverplate Brides Basket Cherub Floral And Bird Design C1890
This auction is for a beautiful Victorian silver plate brides basket made by the Meriden Silver Plate Co. About 1890. Item features original antiques silver surface not tarnish. This was a process done to the piece when new. It has a lustrous blue gray surface. Piece measures 11 1/2" wide 9 1/2" deep and 14" to top of handle. Piece is in nice condition with the exception to two small cracks to the edge of bowl as shown in photos. This will make a wonderful addition to your collection.
