Gorgeous 19th Century Bridal Brides Basket, Antique Glass HP Bowl, Silverplate
Up for sale is a beautiful Victorian 19th century bride's basket with hand-painted cased glass fluted bowl and quadruple silverplated holder with ornate handle. The color on the upside of the bowl begins with a clear edge then flows from dark rose to pale pink and very pale pink in the center. Yellow dots. Flowers, and scrollwork and blue and white flowers are all handpainted: You can feel the depth of the paint, which is in very good condition. Silver color leaves also grace the bowl, but some of this paint seems to have faded. I see no chips or cracks in the glass bowl. There are minute spots of what looks like ash on the all-white bottom; there is also a bubble in the finish of the upside that looks and feels a bit like a pimple and is about the size of a pencil eraser; these are from the manufacturing process done more than one hundred ... moreyears ago. The quadruple silverplated basket was made by the New Amsterdam Silver Co. and has the number 2971 engraved in the bottom; the number 5446-x is etched into the bottom. The basket is in good condition but is in need of polishing. The base appears to have most of its silverplate intact with the exception of the inside of the base where the bowl sits; some parts of this have a greenish cast. The handle seems to have some silverplate loss as well as some minute pitting. All in all this is a wonderful piece for something that could very easily be 115 years old. Bowl is 11" in diameter at its widest. 3" high, and 3 1/2" across the base. Holder is 12 1/2" at its widest and 13" high. Please ask questions. The Victorian bridal basket is very interesting with figural accents. Around the rim of the basket are very well-detailed Knights in armor and the bust of a woman that could be a Queen. The base of the basket has a reclining dog and the four feet are hooves. The basket comes with what is believed to be its original etched glass bowl. The bowl is clear glass with a border of shields or crests that have a cross and circle, and there is a star in the bottom of the bowl. The basket is marked on the bottom as shown in the pictures. Absolutely breathtaking! This is a lovely example of Meriden B Company’s quadruple plate at its best. This bridal or cake basket. Tray, or platter is apx. 9 ¾” in diameter. It stands apx. 5 ½” to the top of the plate, and has a handle apx. 5” tall, for a total of apx. 10 ½” in height. The handle has a floral design. And the inside of the basket has what look like daisies and leaves. The edge of the basket is exquisite with flowers and leaves. The base is 4-footed, and has a more stylized design. This is a silver plated bride's basket that we believe was made during the Victorian era by the Middletown Plate Company. This unusual piece is decorated with Roman/Grecian figures including gladiator or warriors. Palm fronds and flowers. The inside of the bowl has detailed etchings of flowers and leaves on four sides. The basket has a pedestal base which gives it a nice, elegant look. The basket is marked Quadruple Plate. A term most commonly used during the Victorian period. The maker's mark is Middletown Plate Co, who merged with International Silver in 1899. We believe this is an antique Victorian era bride's basket. This item is in good vintage condition with heavy tarnish that actually looks lovely on this piece. ANTIQUE BRIDAL / WEDDING BASKET, likely silverplate, swing handle, well toned
An unusual antique BRIDAL or WEDDING BASKET(TAZZA) With a swing handle. I cannot find identifying markings of any kind, but it seems most likely that this is silverplate. The height of the bowl is about 4 inches, the diameter of the bowl is about 12 inches, and with the handle laid flat it is about 13 inches across. With the handle up the height is about 11 inches. The metal is deeply embossed(high relief) with figures of a variety of fruits and possibly nuts. I can see pears and grape clusters, but there are a lot of other things present. The decorations are very densely packed, with relatively flat surfaces only near the very center of the bowl. The handle is also highly decorated. The bowl sits on a 4 toed pedestal which is also decorated. I think it is likely the basket was made pre-1940 and certainly pre-1950. This basket has an unusual ... moreand colorful toning pattern(patina) It is darker on the underside than on top. And darker near the circumference than towards the center. In the gradations of toning you can see colors such as purple, red, and blue. A piece which appears identical to this. But with a different toning pattern, sold recently on eBay for $35.60. ~~Vintage Meriden Silverplate Footed Bridal Basket - Stork and Ferns - Details~~
Offered in this auction is this vintage footed bridal basket. I do believe it is a silverplate. Even if it is not marked that way. It does need a good clean up and I will leave that for the new owner. Very detailed at the edge and the inside of basket with a stork and ferns. Also look at the design on the handle. It looks to me, that it is bend a little. It stands 6 1/4 inch tall and with handle up about 12 inches. Basket on top measures 9 inch in diameter. Very nice vintage piece, which does need a little TLC.

An antique Silverplated Bridal Basket from the English manufacturer John Sherwood& Sons. We are pleased to present this antique Silverplated Bridal Basket for your consideration. An elaborate. Ornate piece, it dates to the Victorian period(circa 1890) and was manufactured by John Sherwood& Sons in Birmingham. England. The Bridal Basket measures 8-1/2 inches high(to the top of the handle when extended) And is 9-3/4 inches in diameter. It has a 4-5/8 inch diameter foot. It weighs 2 pounds(911 grams) Hallmarked in a style similar to sterling, it has a JS&S maker mark. JS&S Beaver trademark. Plus a Crown mark, all visible on the top surface near the edge(see picture 3) Although Sherwood used date letters on occasion. This piece lacks an additional date mark. Moderate tarnish and patina is found on the surface. Which we have left ... moreas found, with the exception of the small area around the hallmark(which polished up nicely) The original silverplate looks like it should be substantially intact if fully polished. The handle is hinged and works smoothly and cleanly. No dings, dents, or other damage are seen, and we rate the overall physical condition as very good. This is a substantial piece from a well regarded Victorian era silversmith. In exceptional condition for its age. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
