This fine antique Victorian circa 1870s large footed cake or brides basket by Meriden Silver Co. This large silverplate basket is ornately decorated with Hummingbirds and ivy vines around the ornate four footed base and also on the outer rim. The basket measures about 9 1/2" in diameter and stands 6" in height not including the ornate folding handle. With the handle extended the basket is 12" in height. The basket stands o n four fabulously ornate feet. The silver craftsmanship is excellent. There are no breaks or repairs. The only thing to note is some tiny dark spots on the interior bottom edge of the basket. see photos) This is marked for Meriden Silver Plate Co. Quadruple Plate. ... moreIt is numbered 1667. I have lightly polished th is piece to check for any silver loss or damage. The silverplating is still beautiful as this was always a cherished piece. Any further polishing will be left to the new owner. The Meriden Silver Plate Company was founded in 1852 by Charles Casper in Meriden. Connecticut, and was well known for producing a variety of different silver-plated items which ranged from wine coolers, pickle castors, napkin holders and much more. The company's silver items typically feature maker's marks with the company's name inside of a circular design. While their limited-edition silver items were marked with individual numbers. The company won a first place medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia thanks to their variety of silver-plated white metal hollow ware. GORGEOUS MERIDEN QUADRUPLE SILVERPLATED SERVING DISH BASKET MID-1800'S. Up for sale is this GORGEOUS Meriden Quadruple Silverplated serving dish basket. Model#1661. After much research, I feel that this basket was made in the mid-1800's. This basket features embossed birds, hammered marks, floral etchings and has four legs which are also beautifully detailed. The condition of this basket is great but one of the legs, which matches the rest, does not bend out, it is straight. This basket has a wonderful patina but if you choose, will need to be polished. The basket has been stamped on the bottom with Meriden Quadruple, 1661 and has a figure of a lion. Whoever placed this stamp did not press too hard because half of the stamp is unreadable or missing. This listing is for a lovely Rogers Smith Co Meriden basket from around the late 1800's-early 1900's with engraved Hummingbird and bee design-Signed by the artist on bottom!see photo of mark) It is a lovely piece with open daisy handle as well with the skirt having detailed aesthetic pattern as well as the side of the handles. The base and top flat area of rim are plain. And to bring out the effect of the piece I left natural patina from age on those areas. They I believe would shine up nicely if you choose. Some people like the patina, but the bowl would not have shown so beautifully if I had not shined it up. There are a few speckles that will shine up as well, but just wanted to give an idea of beauty of piece. The oval daisy area of the handle is a different metal, so that is probably the darkness it is, but is very pretty like ... morethat. It measures 10" across, 7 1/4" to top of basket with a 7" high handle. This piece would have been a stand alone with the engraving. Some pieces as you probably know were made to hold a glass piece, this one would not have. A tiny nearly invisible surface indentation shown in photo of flat edge with bee, just along that edge. VICTORIAN QUADRUPLE PLATE MERIDEN B. FRET WORK CUT WORK SUGAR BASKET SWEET MEAT Search Up for auction is Victorian sugar basket by Meriden B. Company from the late 1800's. I believe the basket is in Quadruple Plate or has been re-plated as it is in very good condition for its age. The Meriden B. Company merged with International Silver Company at the end of the 1800's and this basket still carries the Meriden mark and not the I.S. mark. It is small standing 6.5 inches tall to the top of the handle and 2.5 inches tall to the rim. It is 6.75 inch long and 6 inches measuring front to back. The cut work is fantastic. Victorian fret or cut work was often achieved by using a tool similar to a dental knife of today to carve the intricate details by hand. They were one of the first companies to form International Silver Co. in 1898. Highly regarded, this company was well known for their fine quality and elegance of design and workmanship. Has the very early mark that was used in the 1870's. The inner basket features a highly detailed floral motif. Only thing I found was that the rim is a wee bit out of round. Very minor. Silver plate brides basket or perhaps a calling card holder. Piece has sort of bright cut floral pattern. I have included a photo of the Meriden mark. Piece measures about 6&1/2 inches wide at widest and stands about 4 inches tall. Piece is in very good used condition. There are a few dents and some slight scratches but overall pretty good. The basket measures 11 1/4" tall x 5 3/4" in diameter at the base. The bowl measures 11 3/4" in diameter. It has a clear opalescent glass rim and a semi-polished pontil on the bottom. It is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repair. It does have a couple of bubbles. The basket could use a polishing, but is otherwise in very good condition. It is listed in my store. This brides basket is incredible and beautiful! PLEASE LOOK AT ALL 12 PICTURES)The basket sits on four rounded feet that are decorated with scrolls. Flowers and tiny leaves. Above that is a 1/4 inch band of scrolling work going all the way around. The mane band of the body has large campus leaves some round leaves, large flowers, small flowers and vines. Then there is another 1/4 inch band of scrolling work. The band that holds the glass bowl has a deep stripe pattern all the way around. The C shape connectors that connect the handle to the basket has flowers inside and out and round balls that connect it to the basket ring.The handle is a twisted handle. This silverplate basket has so much going on. It was made by Meriden, and marked on the bottom with an applied piece of silverplate Meriden silver plate Co. No 7017 and a lion holding a ... moretrophy in the middle, this mark dates it to(1869. There is no silver plate missing and no broken metal. This piece was sealed years ago to keep it from turning black, it can be removed by soaking in hot water over night then peal off. The glass fluted bowl was made by L.G.WRIGHT IN 1937. And it is marked with a M with a line in a circle.L.G. Wright Glass Company of New Martinsville, West Virginia, started selling glassware in 1937. Founder"Si" Wright contracted with Ohio and West Virginia glass factories to make popular pressed glass patterns, like Rose& Snow, Baltimore Pear, and Three Face, and opalescent patterns, like Daisy& Fern and Swirl. L.G. Wright items are marked with an underlined W in a circle. The bowl is a daisy and fern pattern it is opalescent and very ice blue. The glass is bright and the pattern is clear. Engraved with flowers and palmate leaves on the top with 2 inset picture panels showing what appears to be Mt Fuji. The volcano in Japan- with trees and flowers. The skirt has raised panels showing love birds and flowers in low bowl vases. The foot is also decorated with the bird and flower panels to match the skirt. Pierced work on the handle. A substantial, hefty piece. Measures about 7" to the top of the basket and another 6 1/2" to the top of the handle. Approx. 10" ... moreacross the under side of the skirt. About 9" across the top at the hinge points for the handle. Marked on the bottom with 2 circles- B Meriden Company& Quadruple Plate. Also the number 1893 with a scratched in number 685. Unpolished. As you can see there is one spot of loss in the bottom center of the basket. Other wise the finish is very nice with some light scratches from age and use. What an impressive beautifully detailed basket recently acquired at an estate sale. I am not an expert in silver or silverplate. But will describe as accurately as possible. It is marked Meriden B Company, pattern is un known to me. There is also the number 311 on one foot I have also pictured. Measures 10" tall, width 5 1/2" and the base opening is 3 1/8" There is detailed"beading" all over on the handle, and even tinier looking beading around the outer rim of the bowl. For accuracy only, I will mention that there is a teeney tiny"miss" smaller than a pin head that I have pictured on the rim and another area very small area where I can feel roughness. Here is rare and very beautiful bridle basket from the late 1800s in very good condition. It has a hand etched floral design on either side of the basket and it was made by the Meriden& wilcox co. Late 1800s, It is a rare smaller basket measuring 5 inches in diameter by 2 inches high with a beautifully braided handle that moves to both sides on a hinge, I've only seen one other like this one, and I've search the web looking for it, not many of the smaller ones like this one were maid. There really are no categories to place it in eBay. It is a centerpiece worthy of a better definition other than baskets. There are no compote category either. Anyway it is big. It measures 13" high. The diameter of the basket(compote would be solid? at the widest part on top is 10 1/2" Similiar to a large dinner plate. The porcelain is gorgeous and very very well done. I see no chips, however the small roses are so very defined that they are sharp to the touch and if there is a tiny chip, I could not even feel it. The bottom of the porcelain is marked with two lines and a crescent, underglaze. I have spent 2 hours through my extensive porcelain books and online and come up with ... moreMeissen, mid 19c each time, except for one Chelsea, English made company and that was not a definitive as the Meissen marks. I am exhausted. Personally I have owned and still do, some Meissen pieces and Dresden as well. This workmanship, to the best of my experience is either Meissen or English. Very well crafted and fine porcelain hardpaste. There are NO cracks, NO linecracks, NO discolorations, brilliant white and vivid blue. What's nice is.the silver round button style piece that screws the top on, is plated and it makes is so easy to clean both pieces. Now. The base. The base is made by Meriden Britannia Company, from Meriden, Ct. in the mid 1800s. The company was very famous for its fine pieces during the Victorian era and won many awards for their better pieces. They made sterling as well as silver quadruple plate and then silverplate. This is one of the earlier pieces and the silver is all intact. There are NO worn off areas. It features a sweet little bird on one side. I purchased this from a lovely estate this past summer and wanted it for my table for the holidays. Enjoyed it.now it is someone elses turn. I am fortunate enough to buy and sell and enjoy. Antique Victorian Silverplate Basket Sailboat Deer Aesthetic Ornate Meriden
Here is one of several Victorian silverplate auctions we currently have listed. Sometimes the photos just don't capture detail well. And in this case we could not get a really great photo of the center with the boat and deer. There is more detail than is showing, but between light reflections and tarnish it does not show. There is a lot of detail overall, from the hammered look the rim has, with raised up birds and leaves, each of those areas is framed with a checkered border. The sides of the base a foot area are also very detailed. Made by Meriden#1663. Measures 9 3/4" across and 4" high to the edge of the base.
