Antique Vintage Forbes Silver Company Ornate Metal Silver Plate Bridal Basket
A beautifully ornate bridal basket from Forbes Silver Company. It is marked with the company seal and the number 200 on the bottom. It has a nice leaf and flower design etched into the surface with a raised inlaid flower design edge. The handle resembles grape vines with leaves and fruit. Was going to polish but think the patina gives it a wonderful antique feel. There is some surface scratching and a few small dings but nothing major. Its diameter measures 8-1/2 inches.

The internal of the bowl has a ~ 4 ½” circular domed bottom surrounded by eight egg-like smooth swells to complete the design. The handle is a rod-like piece with ends attached to the body of the basket in an ornate rod and pinion assembly. Atop the handle is attached scrollwork. An estate sale find. I don't know much about silver. Or silver plate. This basket is in great condition with no breaks anywhere that I can see. It measures approximately 12 to 12-1/2" to the top of the handle. The highest point of the basket itself is approximately 4-1/2" The widest part or diameter is a little over 12" It has a little tarnish here and there but nothing bad. It looks like there is a few minor specks in the bottom where possible the silver has worn off. I have tried to show this in the pictures. I pack with great care. Has"Forbes Silver Co. mark along with"Quadruple" and"206" on bottom side on piece. No personalized engravings. There is a flower and fern design etched into the center of the plate/ basket itself. The edge trim is not completely flat all the way around, I'm not sure if it is slightly wavy by design or if it has a couple of slightly bent places. Nothing appears broken and none of the trim looks stressed. The handle moves freely. There are some scratches, discoloration and the whole thing is tarnished. Today they are called Brides Baskets, as they were very popular as wedding gifts during the Victorian era. I'm sure that most brides today would LOVE to have one as well! The basket measures approximately 12" Tall and 12" W at widest point. The quadruple silver basket is footed for a secure base and is decorated with a beautiful circular band around the base. ... moreThe handle has a twisted design topped with a pretty leaf and berry design decoration. The basket and bowl are in very good condition. Especially taking into account its age. I'm including a photo close up of a small raised half circle spot on the underneath base of the basket. Where one of the prongs is attached on the top. The prong seems just as sturdy as the others, so I'm not exactly sure if this is a small repair or what. If it is a repair, it seems like a good one! The ruffled bowl is white on the inside and has a lovely pink edge. It is designed especially for this silver piece. With a round flat base and fits beautifully into the base of the basket. There are a few manufacturing glitches on the bowl that are small but will mention. One is a small lighter white circular spot that you will see in a photo and a small circular raised spot nearby. These are manufacturing glitches. There is scratch wear on one inside section that is visible and these are totally"human glitches"from actually using this beautiful piece a lot. Beautiful heavy weight ornate grape design basket. I believe that it was common to give a silver(plate) basket as a wedding gift so they took on the name"wedding basket" Those with a moveable handle like this one were used as cake baskets. The handle also will stay upright. It is stamped quadruple and the number 265. It also has the number 478 etched into it which I am told came from the Baltimore tax office. Measures 11" across. 2" high. Quite unique and beautiful!
