A top quality high end early Victorian sofa from c1850-1870 with the highest probability from the 1850's. Strong Rococo Revival Lines such as heavy naturalist carvings and c curves throughout. It is made up of solid dark walnut and appears to have the original finish. The sofa has wonderful carved cabriol legs and a great carved motif on the front along with its original castor wheels.Regardless of the maker. Scrolls, foliate and floral on the triple serpentine crest-rail, with a highly carved serpentine seat-rail,full covered arms with carved arm supports, demi-cabriole styled legs with the original casters intact on the front feet we believe this sofa to also have its rich original finish. Although we cannot say with any certainty that this sofa was made by John Henry Belter. One of the preeminent American cabinetmakers of the 19th century, it hails from the same time period and is strikingly similar to Belter's intensely beautiful and ornate Rococo Revival furniture. Because of its excellent condition it is clear the sofa has been lovingly cared for throughout the years. It was professionally(and tastefully) re-upholstered in 2000 in a deep red Damask fabric and crème pattern. The intense ornate carvings of what appear to be wild roses or magnolias- complete with seed pods- are exquisite! The molded frame exhibits robust rocaille carvings in the crest and three divisions of the apron- these are not identical carvings, but rather each is imagined and executed with artistic leisure. Likewise, acanthus influenced swirls break through the molding and allow the frame to meander more subtly in it's barrel back form, culminating in the handholds that each exhibit the typical foliage wrap over seen in these forms; ... morehowever, the bold character of even these hand holds is exemplary, the foliage lifting in the back to curl where the wrist would rest. The cushion is deeply and comfortably stuffed. Presumably with down(though we have not actually checked the contents- if this is important to you, we can certainly do so) resting over a long and comfortable lounge surface. A very beautful antique. Circa 1860's, French style Rococo Revival carved walnut sofa. It has a finely carved scrolling crest and carved center front skirt. It has been reupholstered in a cream color fabric, the back rest tufted. Nicely refinished. It measures 3'11" 47" tall by 5'10" 70" wide by 2'6" 30" deep, the seat 22" deep. Very good plus condition: solid construction, front casters, fabric without wear or stains. The bottom of both back legs have been cut down 1-1/2" and replaced back with walnut, probably caused by original caster damage(see photo.
