The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. C. 1820-40 Item# 130204KNI21 This is a very fine Rare American Painted Bench or Settee with Six-Chairbacks over Fourteen Legs. A Late Federal work of art in the Sheraton taste, probably c. 1820-40. The design, particularly in the legs, closely conforms to the sentiments of Hitchcock chair designs(c. 1825-50) of the earliest form- the artisan of this bench elevates the form quite drastically with the intense ribbing of the bamboo-style legs and stiles. The canted back features rail-and-ball horizontal spindles over conforming arms flanking a deep and comfortable Rush seat[replaced] The fragility of the form is eliminated with careful attention to pressure points, this work supported with doubled front-to-back stretcher systems in the legs, double-spindle stretchers ... morein the medial of the arms and six spindles per chair back. The settee rests over fourteen legs. Each carefully carved with olive-green highlights in it's precise ring turnings, the legs each terminating in tiny ball toes- the right and leftmost legs flare slightly outward, removing the stoic aesthetic of what could otherwise remain too square to be visually refined. Preserved in unusually fine condition. This is a treasure of early Americana. Forms like this would typically grace a long hallway, entranceway or the landing of a second story. Antique American Empire Carved Mahogany Sofa Settee Circa 1830-1850
A beautiful American Empire sofa/settee. Amazing carved mahogany details with olive green mohair upholstery. Measures approximately 64 inches long x 24 inches deep x 34 1/2 inches tall at the back. The round fluted crest rail has downturned curved ends on either side with acanthus leaf carvings above a smooth curved back. The front of the arms have carved cherries. Pears, oak leaves, acanthus leaves, and nuts framed by a cartouche of C scrolls. Feather design carving on legs with paw feet. Possibly made in New York. There is overall fading on the upholstery along with a worn spot on the back, a tear on the side, and the trim is loose in one section(see photos) Appraised at 2,300. This settee has been well cared for and will provide many years of enjoyment for the new owner.

Antique Tiger Maple Daybed Sofa Hired Mans Bed Early American Old 19th Century
An authentic Early American maple wood Hired Mans or daybed made in the first quarter of the 19th century. This has finely turned tiger maple posts and rails with highly figured curly grain. The original rope seat support was replaced many years ago with a thick drop-in cushion built on a heavy spring loaded wood frame. The cushion is covered in mohair velvet and shows some wear but would steam clean nicely. This measures 72 inches wide. 26 inches deep and the back is 28 inches high. The top of the cushion measures 19 inches from the floor. It is solid. Sturdy, and quite heavy, with no problem of supporting a lot of weight. This is a antique empire couch in mahogany and reupholstered with a cotton damask fabric. Overall in very good condition. However. Antiques are by their very nature imperfect with time and develop a patina of the wood that is desired. There are slight areas of marring to veneer. The carving on the front of arms in beautiful condition. The mahogany is gorgeous. Fabric is clean and not flawed. Very little wear to fabric. The arms are slightly loose and can be repaired. The sofa is 7'8" long by 26" deep by 32" high. Floor to seat height is 14" The sofa features wonderfully carved hairy paw feet with wings and graceful out swept arms, with a reeded front edge. It has recently been upholstered and the upholstery is in excellent condition. There are no bolster pillows unfortunately, and the padding on the seat is rather sparse. It should have had another two or three inches of padding built up on the seat when it was re-upholstered. It would be nice with one long cushion in our opinion. Very Fine American Classical Style Carved Antique Sofa Settee, 19th Century
EXQUISITE AMERICAN CLASSICAL STYLE MAHOGANY SOFA In the manner of Duncan Phyfe(New York. 1768-1854) 19th Century Item# 1402ZAZ25-Q A very fine example of pristine craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of intertwined cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. This motif captured the spirit of a period of peace and economic prosperity during which this sofa was crafted. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife- it was an expensive detail to have incorporated into a sofa, as any small mistake led to the costly disposal of countless hours of labor and a large plank of ... moregorgeous mahogany. The crest rail has a soft backward slope, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curvature of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. The legs are deeply molded in large tapering horns that simulate the trumpet form of the cornucopia. Each leg scrolling softly along the apron- it is worth noting that the back legs are likewise carved of identical quality to the front legs, despite the time consuming and expensive nature of this carving and their relatively low visibility. Each leg terminates in well formed Lion's Paw, these of outstanding quality with each toe and knuckle well defined and culminating in sharp claws at the front. RARE AMERICAN LATE FEDERAL BLACK AND GILT PAINTED FOURTEEN LEG SETTEE c. 1820-40 Item# 130204KNI21 This is a very fine Rare American Painted Bench or Settee with Six-Chairbacks over Fourteen Legs. A Late Federal work of art in the Sheraton taste, probably c. 1820-40. The design, particularly in the legs, closely conforms to the sentiments of Hitchcock chair designs(c. 1825-50) of the earliest form- the artisan of this bench elevates the form quite drastically with the intense ribbing of the bamboo-style legs and stiles. The canted back features rail-and-ball horizontal spindles over conforming arms flanking a deep and comfortable Rush seat[replaced] The fragility of the form is eliminated with careful attention to pressure points, this work supported with doubled front-to-back stretcher systems in the legs, double-spindle stretchers in the ... moremedial of the arms and six spindles per chair back. The settee rests over fourteen legs. Each carefully carved with olive-green highlights in it's precise ring turnings, the legs each terminating in tiny ball toes- the right and leftmost legs flare slightly outward, removing the stoic aesthetic of what could otherwise remain too square to be visually refined. Preserved in unusually fine condition. This is a treasure of early Americana. Forms like this would typically grace a long hallway, entranceway or the landing of a second story. This is an absolute work of art to be cherished for a lifetime by serious collectors of American furniture. Measurements: 20 3/4" deep. Approximately 94" long, 34" high to crest Condition Report: Rush seat is replaced and in excellent condition. Front right foot is restored with a 3" splice and toe is replaced. One ball toe is reattached with a nail. Worn painted black surface over an earlier olive or teal painted surface- surface is heavily worn with significant chipping and loss.
