This is a true Victorian gem! I have never seen anything like it. It is a fainting sofa/ chaise that opens and turns into a bed. The back has hinges and is meant to go down. The cushion opens up and folds out to reveal a hand made mattress, additional legs and even a hand made pillow. The mattress and pillow are made of straw and horse hair stuffing and are very heavy and amazingly in great shape. All antique experts that I have asked about this piece agree that this is extremely rare and nothing like they have seen. It has a metal plaque on the bottom with date and patent number from Boston. Continental Empire Style Fruitwood Daybed Probably Late 19th Century Item# 130006KIA13 For any decorator. Interior designer or anyone looking for an airy and classical form for their formal living room, this is a simply outstanding find. With quite fine form, the daybed lacks the bulky and overbearing appeal that too often is associated with works of the Late Classical and Empire periods. The thin scrolling profile is distinctly Neo-Grec in form, the arms in opposing S-scrolls flanking a large scrolling back rail. The loose upholstered cushion remains in good condition with just light staining and snags, as such giving it a certain vintage appeal that is attractive to some and unacceptable to others. It is deep and comfortably stuffed with down, giving it a lasting fullness throughout. The sofa rests over sabre legs over small ball feet. ... moreProbably crafted during the late 19th Century. The piece remains in excellent condition- notwithstanding the bit of looseness in the arms(and accompanying"crookedness" visible only from the side) this is an exceptional piece for anyone seeking a formal and classical solution to a living room or sunroom. Measurements: 79" long x 20 7/8" wide x 32 1/8" high to taller side; 21" high to top of the cushion Condition Report: Small stains and snags to upholstery. Oxidized scratches to the frame. As well as other scattered abrasions and dings throughout as expected with any antique. Light chipping to right leg; rear back leg has half of the ball foot chipped off. Old crack in back leg. The arms are a bit loose when lifted upward- they are very sturdy and strong and do not require restoration when it isn't being moved, but to lift upward from either side shows wiggle. We would recommend quickly re-gluing the joints eventually, but not worrisome as is; viewed from the side, you can see a slight crookedness to the arms, but this is not noticeable when looking at the sofa more generally. Was told this was from a Brothel in the late 1800's. It has been reupholstered and stuffed. A beautiful dark red. Almost burgundy. Truly feels like a cloud when reclining on it! I haven't used any scratch remover or polish so I'm sure that would clean right up and shine! The tufts aren't as deep as I like but that's just my preference. I hate to sell this but as you can see it doesn't match my color scheme. I live in Boerne. My husband and I have been doing furniture and collecting antiques for a whole now and this is one of the best pieces we've come across. Qi bought from an elderly coulple that had it covered in a bedspread sewn to match their room. She said it had Benin her family since early 1900's from Germany. This deeply worn and patinated with traces of gilt over a green and cream ground, the chaise lounge exudes a provincial charm that can only be found from years of enjoyment and exposure. Crafted very clearly in the French Louis XV taste probably during the mid to late 19th Century, it remains in quite nice condition despite it's years. We would certainly change the upholstery, as the wing is a bit too discolored to be forgiven, but the down stuffed cushion remains very full and comfortable. If you like the upholstery, a small pillow could be used to hide the discoloration ... moreand the upholstery enjoyed in it's current condition until you find the ideal fabric for it. Finely carved throughout. The deeply channeled and molded frame is interwoven with naturalistic embellishments throughout; there is a strong acanthus presence throughout- in the carved hand holds, the turns of the molding and in the outflow of the crest and apron carvings. These two in particular, the crest and the apron, both are deeply and robustly carved in a most admirable way. A distinctly rocaille design, the shell grows from the molding in a perfect transition, the finely incised lines detailing the inside of the shell and the outflowing foliage. The entire form rests over six cabriole legs terminating in scrolling french toes. Auction is for fainting couch only. This lovely little princess fainting lounge comes from a non smoking home. It is a very sturdy piece in need of reupholstering. HI. here is a rare piece of antique furniture. this is a salesman sample or patent sample for a Mission. Arts&Crafts style rocking chaise/ chair. it is constructed of wood and nicely detailed and works well, as it;would be for a working sample model of a to be produced piece of furniture. it measures 13.5 inches long on the base,and 12.5 inches high to top of chair and 8 1/8 inches wide in the front. the inset on the chair is a mohair velvet, the back is all wood with a diamond wood center the nails on the upper left are potrusding slightly, this can be due to age but all is there. there is well detailed trim on all the sides and wood finials at the top of the arms. it rocks well with miniature springs on the bottom, you can imagine this blown up to full size and looking great. found a while back and it is here to sell, email any questions ... moreyou might have before bidding. we accept paypal only and payment due within 3 days at the end of auction. thanks for bidding
