Carved Mahogany Federal Sofa New Upholstery
Very nice and clean federal cornucopia carved setae with carved claw feet. Carved acanthus leaves scrolling down the curved arms ending in a floral rosette. Gadrooned scalloped front apron above very heavily carved cornucopia baskets of nuts and berries ending in large claw feet. This setae is smaller then the obnoxiously built larger sofa models which I also live equally but they don't fit just anywhere. We have cleaned this one since I pictured it and looks much better now. The upholstery is brand new never been sat on yet in a light gold/yellow Damascus fabric. Very pretty sofa with awesome flowing lines and details. This is an estate fresh piece that came directly out of multigenerational Manhattan apartment that has been passed from family member to family member from just about the time of New York City defining itself in the early 19th Century. It is a sad epoch to note the last of this family. This sofa was either made by the hands of Duncan Phyfe or one of his shop's very best workers. These are hairy Griffin paw feet with detail right down to toe nails flowing from carved sunflowers, an urn with just a breathtaking array of a floral motifs emanating from it with satinwood inlaid capitals over them. Antique Settee or Loveseat- my research indicates that this is probably Sheraton/Sheraton style. Hepplewhite/Hepplewhite style, or American Federal Style. I lean toward Sheraton because the style matches that most closely, and the wood does not look like Mahogany and Sheraton furniture was frequently done in Satinwood. An absolutely marvelous example of craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of opposing cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife. The crest rail has a soft backward ... morecurvature, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curve of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. The legs terminate in well formed Lion Paw feet over a ball-bearing caster, this original on all feet and still functioning smoothly. Most importantly, the finish on the sofa is just outstanding- very early and quite possibly original, the grimy surface preserves a well patinated mahogany beneath the alligatored crackling of old shellac. Areas of high use and traffic have rubbed through this shellac and have a brilliant ruby glow to them, but much of the less trafficked areas on the sofa remain untouched and hazy. Exquisite crotch mahogany veneers applied in a matched repeating flame pattern on the exposed wood sections of the sofa. It is 90" wide. 28" deep, and 34" high. Circa 1820-1830. Finely carved swans in profile form the arms and built in bolsters. Reupholstered in a subtle tone-on-tone medallion/flower/wreath pattern in an ivory color. Includes 2 matching custom-made pillows(seen in the pictures) Mint condition. Original casters. Beautiful and functional antique. We specifically had the finish and patina kept intact when the sofas were reupholstered, and the last two pictures taken in natural light without flash show how the wood actually looks. The sofa is solid mahogany and has wonderful carved detail featuring fruits and hairy paw front feet. The back feet are plain. The sofa measures 86” long. 33-1/2” high, 23” deep, and the seat is approximately 19” high. The sofa frame is all there and mostly solid. But the left arm needs gluing. The fabric is in OK condition. And was put on in 1968. There are also some old repairs on both arms(see pictures) Please look at all of the pictures carefully as they are part of the description. It came out of an estate out of upper New York. We had to do a couple of small repairs to the repair and a fix a toe that had some chipping. But overall this sofa is as found. The upholstery must have been done in the last two or three years in a period style upholstery and is in excellent condition. Someone did the right thing and took the extra fabric to make under the arm pillows. The frame itself has been glued, sanded, stained, and applied multiple coats of satin sheen lacquer on it to bring out the flame mahogany, basket urns, carved hairy paw feet and the carved floral fronts of the rolled arms. It even comes with the old country turned back leg, which they usually did in those days as they took things from some old job as the back didn’t count in their rules. You are buying on beautiful ready to go into the home sofa. This one is very comfortable to sit in as they have put in a real thick foam cushion, which is very comfy compared to the old back breakers. This is a wonderful size as it is not over large. In the Sheraton style and made in New England, probably Boston. The framework is mahogany with birch or maple panels on the legs. It is 53" wide by 34" high at the back by 29" deep. Floor to seat height is 20" With good color and a nice old re-finish. Please view all photos carefully. It is 6" wide including the frame by 1" deep. Guaranteed to be as described. Empire Sofa Federal Style Paw Feet Mahogany late 1800's
Very good condition. No holes. Stains. Minor color fading on the sides. Pillows are in great shape. Fabric is period style, color is dark coral with bumble bee design. The length is 73 inches. Width is 21.5 in. height, floor to arm rest 30 in. floor to back 35 in. We have owned this for over 20 years and was used in a formal living room with little to no use. Smoke. Pet, child free home. It is stored covered in our basement. Buyers are responsible for moving the sofa. If you need more photos please ask. We are located close to Long Beach Island on the Jersey shore. Approx 100 miles from New York, and 70 miles from Philadelphia.
