Highly Carved Antique Victorian Rococo Loveseat Sofa - Pickup in NJ only
Up for auction is this beautiful Victorian Rococo loveseat with a magnificent. Highly carved walnut frame. It measures approximately 40 inches high and 66 inches at its longest point. The seat height is 16 inches. The seat measures 21 inches deep. If you measure from where the back of the frame where it touches the wall, to the front of the seat, it measures approximately 30.5 inches deep. It has its original 4 casters. The springs are in good condition. And there are no tears in the fabric. It does have a spot with some light staining, which we never noticed until we were checking it closely for the description. There's one repair on the end of the apron, which can be seen in two of our pictures. It is a 2 inch by 2 inch by 1.5 inch triangle. This is not part of the leg, only a part of the apron. No reserve. Victorian Rococo Revival Sofa - Belter Style
A top quality high end early Victorian sofa from c1850-1870 with the highest probability from the 1850's. Strong Rococo Revival Lines such as heavy naturalist carvings and c curves throughout. It is made up of solid dark walnut and appears to have the original finish. The sofa has wonderful carved cabriol legs and a great carved motif on the front along with its original castor wheels.Regardless of the maker. Who ever made this was a fine cabinetmaker back in the day- not just some average cabinetmaker. Notice the depth of the carvings on the frame: What quality! The upholstery may actually be the original with green velvet filled with either horsehair or straw cushing. It is in real good shape considering its antique age with just a few blemishes as to be expected with antique fabrics. This auction is for an Antique Victorian Rococo Heavily Carved Grape Serpentine Front Walnut& Rosewood possibly Belter- Quality Sofa. It measures 76 3/4" long by 28 1/2" wide by 43 1/2" tall- it has been reupholstered at sometime in a maroon velvet type material with a floral design- the upholstery is in excellent condition and doesn't need redone- the sofa is in structurally solid excellent condition- there is very minor wear on some of the carving and there is a repair on the skirt above the back right leg- it can be picked up for free or I will ship using R& L Carriers(Gator Freight) anywhere in the US for a maximum of $350.00 or less depending on your location- or you can choose another shipper although I have found R& L Carriers to be the most reasonable and reliable.

This 19th century sofa is grand and elegant and features beautiful ornate carved shells. Scrolls, foliate and floral on the triple serpentine crest-rail, with a highly carved serpentine seat-rail,full covered arms with carved arm supports, demi-cabriole styled legs with the original casters intact on the front feet we believe this sofa to also have its rich original finish. Although we cannot say with any certainty that this sofa was made by John Henry Belter. One of the preeminent American cabinetmakers of the 19th century, it hails from the same time period and is strikingly similar to Belter's intensely beautiful and ornate Rococo Revival furniture. Because of its excellent condition it is clear the sofa has been lovingly cared for throughout the years. It was professionally(and tastefully) re-upholstered in 2000 in a deep red Damask fabric and crème pattern. These typically sell for $6000 an up! Nice bargain here. John Henry Belter, original name Johann Heinrich Belter(born 1804. Hilter, near Osnabrück[Germany]died Oct. 15. 1863. New York, N.Y. U.S. cabinetmaker and designer known for his superb Victorian Rococo pieces. Belter served as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice in Württemberg(now in Germany) Where he was trained in the Black Forest tradition of rich carving so admired during the 19th century. Settling in ... morein 1833. He married and opened a fashionable shop on Broadway. Although he also worked in walnut and mahogany, his favourite material was(then popular in the United States) With which he experimented.
