With quite fine form, the daybed lacks the bulky and overbearing appeal that too often is associated with works of the Late Classical and Empire periods. The thin scrolling profile is distinctly Neo-Grec in form, the arms in opposing S-scrolls flanking a large scrolling back rail. The loose upholstered cushion remains in good condition with just light staining and snags, as such giving it a certain vintage appeal that is attractive to some and unacceptable to others. It is deep and comfortably stuffed with down, giving it a lasting fullness throughout. The sofa rests over sabre legs over small ball feet. ... moreProbably crafted during the late 19th Century. The piece remains in excellent condition- notwithstanding the bit of looseness in the arms(and accompanying"crookedness" visible only from the side) this is an exceptional piece for anyone seeking a formal and classical solution to a living room or sunroom. Measurements: 79" long x 20 7/8" wide x 32 1/8" high to taller side; 21" high to top of the cushion Condition Report: Small stains and snags to upholstery. Oxidized scratches to the frame. As well as other scattered abrasions and dings throughout as expected with any antique. Light chipping to right leg; rear back leg has half of the ball foot chipped off. Old crack in back leg. The arms are a bit loose when lifted upward- they are very sturdy and strong and do not require restoration when it isn't being moved, but to lift upward from either side shows wiggle. We would recommend quickly re-gluing the joints eventually, but not worrisome as is; viewed from the side, you can see a slight crookedness to the arms, but this is not noticeable when looking at the sofa more generally. The piece is masterfully carved and painted in green and an ivory color and wonderful parcel gilt. The crest rail features a laurel wreath extending outward from a central floral rocaille. The rail continues with more floral carved decoration all the way to the bottom and around the back and inside around the cusion. The back is caned with a single layer and the outside panels are double caned. All of the caning is in excellent condition. The bottom features an oak and acorn motif broken up by a carved and gilted ribbon and the top rocaille decorations of each leg. The rocailles above the legs are very well carved and they sit above the cabriolet legs with scroll feet. The canape ... morehas some minor loss of paint that is consistent with normal use over the past 125+ years. There is also shrinkage at the joints and small cracks in the unseen places like the back of a leg. The piece is structurally sound and nothing is loose. LIGHTING French Louis XV Style Painted Antique Chaise Lounge Mid to Late 19th Century Item# 130009TOJ23 This is such a charming piece- boasting an dry early painted surface. This deeply worn and patinated with traces of gilt over a green and cream ground, the chaise lounge exudes a provincial charm that can only be found from years of enjoyment and exposure. Crafted very clearly in the French Louis XV taste probably during the mid to late 19th Century, it remains in quite nice condition despite it's years. We would certainly change the upholstery, as the wing is a bit too discolored to be forgiven, but the down stuffed cushion remains very full and comfortable. If you like the upholstery, a small pillow could be used to hide the discoloration ... moreand the upholstery enjoyed in it's current condition until you find the ideal fabric for it. Finely carved throughout. The deeply channeled and molded frame is interwoven with naturalistic embellishments throughout; there is a strong acanthus presence throughout- in the carved hand holds, the turns of the molding and in the outflow of the crest and apron carvings. These two in particular, the crest and the apron, both are deeply and robustly carved in a most admirable way. A distinctly rocaille design, the shell grows from the molding in a perfect transition, the finely incised lines detailing the inside of the shell and the outflowing foliage. The entire form rests over six cabriole legs terminating in scrolling french toes. This treasure of a chaise will certainly be a strike point to the master bedroom or sunroom with some fresh upholstery- it is a remarkably comfortable and practical piece for any social area and will be cherished in your home for a lifetime. A 19th-century French Renaissance Revival carved oak settee. A beautiful antique that I've had in my family for nearly 40 years-but for which we don't have the proper room in our current home. The single warrior-medallion backs are each crested by two mutually facing perched birds. The armrests commence with open-mouthed gargoyle heads. Terminating in concentric ribbon-rolls. The sage velveteen upholstery rises on legs spaced with carved floral cubes(two on each front leg. One on each back leg. The front legs are joined by carved floral crests. These were purchased in Paris during the 1960's when the current oweners husband was assigned to the French embassy. The set is upholstered in gold and ivory Scalamandre silk brocade reproduction fabric. Settee is in very good condition with minor nicks and digs to the gilding and surface consistent with age and use. One of the chairs has a small separation where the arm joins the back frame. There are some small chips in the walnut and some of the edges of the carvings have been chipped. FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE SETTEE W/ ORIGINAL AUBUSSON UPHOLSTERY 19th Century Item# 1407OYD27Z An absolute treasure. This fine French Louis XV Style Settee still retains it's original hand stitched Aubusson upholstery. The scene is a work of art, the back capturing a pair of Peacocks and a pair of Ducks in a meadow framed in a border of swirling foliage and acanthus while the seat depicts a wolf dressed in a Shepherd's clothing as he creeps up on lambs at rest in the pasture. While the textile has darkened with time and dirt and numerous areas have lost their weave, the overall fabric remains stable and in outstanding condition for it's age. The settee is a fine piece of craftsmanship, the molded frame crested by a demilune display of flowers with gilt highlights, the surfaces throughout with traces of polychromed red and gold wash ... moreover patinated mahogany. The legs are joined with pinned tenon mortise construction, resulting in a very sturdy and stable seating piece despite well over a century of enjoyment. The legs are carved carefully with the typical display of flowers among acanthus leafage and terminating in scrolling toes. A small plaque nailed to the underside of the frame reads"Ameublement Decoration Bellaco et Ses Gendres" presumably an early retailer of the piece. For anyone passionate about the Louis XV form. This is an exceptional investment grade object you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 25 1/8" D x 63 1/2" W x 38 1/4" H; 17" H to seat Condition Report: Original aubusson. Worn and discolored with extensive threadbare areas- however, the covering is stable and incredibly attractive. An authentic Early American maple wood Hired Mans or daybed made in the first quarter of the 19th century. This has finely turned tiger maple posts and rails with highly figured curly grain. The original rope seat support was upgraded to a very comfortable drop-in cushion built on a wood frame filled with springs. The cushion is covered in a soft mohair velvet and shows a little wear. The only upholstery work required on this is perhaps replacing the mohair to the fabric of your choice. This measures 72 inches wide. 26 inches deep and the back is 28 inches high. The top of the cushion measures 19 inches from the floor. It is solid. Sturdy, and designed to support a lot of weight. It is an original period piece. And not made from another piece of furniture. C. 1880 Stamped"Léon ROGER" en verso Item# 409CTI20 This is a very attractive French Provincial daybed from the last quarter of the 19th century. Carved in the Louis XV taste. Though clearly with a Provincial appeal, the surfaces are highly active and wonderfully carved with floral motives highlighting all major spaces. The frame is deeply molded, this particularly bold in the swirling acanthus hand holds flanking the daybed. Constructed with permanence throughout, all joinery is tenon-mortise, most of these joints being pegged tenons. The daybed is crafted to be easily broken down into small pieces, the two sides, front and back rails all coming easily apart with four bolts and two screws. The form rests over short cabriole legs with flowers carved along the knees and ... moreterminating in scrolled French toes. The back leg is stamped with a single brand of Léon ROGER, Paris. An absolutely gorgeous piece with a warm and well developed surface patina. This is a gorgeous piece for any home decorated in the French Country taste. Sturdy and strong, this was crafted to last through the generations and will be cherished well beyond our lifetimes if cared for properly. Very Fine American Classical Style Carved Antique Sofa Settee, 19th Century
EXQUISITE AMERICAN CLASSICAL STYLE MAHOGANY SOFA In the manner of Duncan Phyfe(New York. 1768-1854) 19th Century Item# 1402ZAZ25-Q A very fine example of pristine craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of intertwined cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. This motif captured the spirit of a period of peace and economic prosperity during which this sofa was crafted. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife- it was an expensive detail to have incorporated into a sofa, as any small mistake led to the costly disposal of countless hours of labor and a large plank of ... moregorgeous mahogany. The crest rail has a soft backward slope, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curvature of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. The legs are deeply molded in large tapering horns that simulate the trumpet form of the cornucopia. Each leg scrolling softly along the apron- it is worth noting that the back legs are likewise carved of identical quality to the front legs, despite the time consuming and expensive nature of this carving and their relatively low visibility. Each leg terminates in well formed Lion's Paw, these of outstanding quality with each toe and knuckle well defined and culminating in sharp claws at the front.
