The couch is upholstered in a velvet material and features extra-long fringe around the bottom perimeter that gives it such unique appeal. The fringe is still firmly attached to the sofa. It has a solid seat surface with a tufted back and side. I believe that the velvet was once a rich green color, but it is now very faded to a sort of yellow. The sofa is 31” tall at the back, 19” tall at the seat, 52” long at the seat, 20” deep at the seat, 22” deep total, and 65” long total.

This is a true Victorian gem! I have never seen anything like it. It is a fainting sofa/ chaise that opens and turns into a bed. The back has hinges and is meant to go down. The cushion opens up and folds out to reveal a hand made mattress, additional legs and even a hand made pillow. The mattress and pillow are made of straw and horse hair stuffing and are very heavy and amazingly in great shape. All antique experts that I have asked about this piece agree that this is extremely rare and nothing like they have seen. It has a metal plaque on the bottom with date and patent number from Boston. Was told this was from a Brothel in the late 1800's. It has been reupholstered and stuffed. A beautiful dark red. Almost burgundy. Truly feels like a cloud when reclining on it! I haven't used any scratch remover or polish so I'm sure that would clean right up and shine! The tufts aren't as deep as I like but that's just my preference. I hate to sell this but as you can see it doesn't match my color scheme. I live in Boerne. Tx and when payment is received can meet with the couch in SAN ANTONIO, AUSTIN, HALF WAY TO HOUSTON or any way that can save you some miles. I go to these places frequently. This fainting couch came from Klemme. Iowa. My mom got it from someone in our town and upholstered it in the 1970's. The fainting couch was moved to Arizona in 1990 and I am now selling items from my parents estate. The fabric is a light cream color with a faint leafy pattern. Comes with three matching pillows. Antique Naperville Khoeler Fainting Couch This is a beautiful Antique Fainting Couch. The body is Probably Quarter sawn golden Oak. That is in remarkably good condition for the age of the piece. There are some barely noticeable cracks. Which are shown. The Upholstery is not original. And needs to be redone. It should be really beautiful once done in a suitable fabric. I have included a photo of the undermesh. I did find a photo of an original piece and it appeared to have a dark brown leather upholstery. I have included a photo of the tag under the piece which states that it was ordered and sent to JK Paul. Pacific Grove Ca. It also bears writing in the upper left hand corner that says San Fran. and 7/25. I am not sure if this refers to a date when this was resold. Since the history of the Manufacturing company dates from 1898. When I purchased ... morethe piece it had a piece of paper with it with the history that it belonged to a family in the wealthy Knob Hill district in San Francisco. So it is possible that either Mr Paul lived there. Or it was later sold to a family in Knob Hill. I think I put this paper away for safekeeping and do not remember where I put it. I have researched the history of this piece. It was built by the Naperville Lounge company. Naperville Illinois. Manufacturer history: Peter Kroehler was born in 1872 the son of immigrant parents. In 1890. He attended the Commercial Academy of North-Western College(now North Central College) in Naperville, Illinois. His professor, James Nichols, and two other men founded the Naperville Lounge Factory in 1893 and hired Peter Kroehler as a clerk at $26 a month. Both the company and Kroehler were off to a good start and by 1896 he entered a partnership with Nichols, Fred Long and John Kraushar, the original investors. The Naperville Lounge Factory changed its name to the Naperville Lounge Company in 1898. built between 1898 and 1904 specifically for Mr J.K. Paul. Oak and tufted velvet fainting sofa built around 1890 Eastlake Co.
I have up for bid an Oak and tufted velvet fainting sofa. It was built around 1890. I believe, by the Charles Eastlake Company(you can tell by the Eastlake straight lines carved in the oak) with a heart carved in the top of the back. The back is removable and the two arms have 6 positions that they will crank down or up for comfort. This sofa was professionally recovered. The sofa also has carved feet. In the first picture the back is 43” tall. 62” wide and the seat is 27” deep. It is very comfortable. I noticed in the heart in the back there is a line on the fabric that I never noticed before but it doesn’t appear to be a flaw in the material. I just want to point everything out. This is a rare, beautiful sofa that will look great in your home. We have never seen one like this one before. This is a miniature antique Victorian fainting couch which I am pretty certain was a salesman sample. It measures 32" long. 13" wide and overall height is 16"9 1/2" bed height. It is in its original material which is in quite shabby condition now and its underneath springs need to be re-tied and it needs new webbing to hold them in place. The material is stained and tattered.it looks like a drab brownish gray now but originally it may have more a greenish stripe and I'm sure very pretty. It has turned hardwood legs.I might guess walnut or oak. It is in need of a restoration.and being in its original state you can see what should look like all restored in color and style. BEST Incised EASTLAKE Victorian Era Fainting Sofa~1880s~Walnut & Velvet~MD/VA/DC
From out non-smoking home… Gorgeous fainting sofa. Most likely 1880s, with beautiful Eastlake foliate incising. Beautifully upholstered in luxurious velvet. Rosy-burgundy with golden-green stripes. Velvet is high-end and may be silk. It has some wear, but is still lovely and functional. Lovely woodwork. Including a high pediment with an ornate shield, curved overlaid burled walnut panels, ornate vining incising, turned feet, fluted molding that curves around the rounded base of the couch, and carved base pediment. Original finish, not refinished and ruined. Condition is excellent for approximately 130 years old. There is wear to the upholstery. But it is still beautiful and useful. Fainting Couch, ca. 1860
I purchased this about 1990 for my"dream home" I had wanted a fainting couch after seeing one in an old house that was like a museum. Decorated as houses were in the mid- to latter- 1800's. The story the guide told was that women had them because their tight corsets made them faint(I wanted it for a chaise lounge type use) It is unusual in that it opens up to reveal 2 small beds for young children& the top of each of these beds will also rise so one can sit up slightly. Based on its age, I assume it was reupholstered, but the fabric is of the type that would have been used on 1860's fainting couches. a green/gold velvet-like brocade. The upholstery was well done, but the 2 little beds inside were more poorly restored. that can easily be done more properly. While inspecting it, I found what appeared to be horse hair stuffing. ... moreThe problem was that it was too big for its intended place in my bedroom. Measurments provided on request. In 1990, I found an almost identical fainting couch valued then at $1000.00, but have since learned that was too low. Understandably, the wood pieces are loose from age; but easily tightened.

oak trimmed fainting couch, ca 1860's with rare child-size "hide-a-bed"
This item has obviously been"restored" more than once. As evidenced by varying quality of restorations. some of the original horsehair stuffing is still present upon close inspection. It opens to reveal 2 child size sleeping surfaces each with raisable head sections which have been improperly covered(easily professionally corrected. The green/ yellow fabric used to re-upholster was of the type that might have been used in the 1860's, well-done, but some trim has recently come loose(easily retacked or re-glued, according to buyer preference. As would be expected, joints are loose from age& wear, but also easily professionally corrected. More pictures available upon serious request.

Victorian Antique Dolly Fainting Couch/Chaise Lounge or Salesman Sample
Hello. Today I am offering up for bids this really neat Victorian style"Fainting Couch or Chase Lounge" It is doll size with wooden legs and frame and a stuffed green cloth top. I purchased this at an auction about 12 years ago. The auctioneer thought it could have been a salesman sample and stated that at the time of the sale. It also could have been used for a store display. You be the judge. It weighs over 6 pounds. It is 23 inches long. 9 inches wide and at its tallest it is 9 inches. The green painted feet have some paint warn and flaked off, giving it a true early distressed look. The green stuffed covering does not looked damaged but will need to be cleaned. There is a round stain about the size of a golf ball on top in the center.
