It's from France and it dates to the late 1800's or possibly early 1900's. It is in excellent antique condition. Ready for use in your home. The beautiful, elaborately carved oak frame solid and strong. The vivid red upholstery is in good antique condition with no discolorations or fading but it is a bit worn along the two center seams(photos) The springs and padding are as they should be and the sofa is comfortable with no lumps or sags. Of course the upholstery is not original-from style of the underside we estimate it is 25 to 50 years old. Victorian Rococo Revival Sofa - Belter Style
A top quality high end early Victorian sofa from c1850-1870 with the highest probability from the 1850's. Strong Rococo Revival Lines such as heavy naturalist carvings and c curves throughout. It is made up of solid dark walnut and appears to have the original finish. The sofa has wonderful carved cabriol legs and a great carved motif on the front along with its original castor wheels.Regardless of the maker. Who ever made this was a fine cabinetmaker back in the day- not just some average cabinetmaker. Notice the depth of the carvings on the frame: What quality! The upholstery may actually be the original with green velvet filled with either horsehair or straw cushing. It is in real good shape considering its antique age with just a few blemishes as to be expected with antique fabrics. The sofa is very sturdy and needs no repairs on ... morethe frame that i know of. The springs on the right hand side of the sofa could be tightened up but this could be done and still keep the antique upholstery intact. This has been in a home for over 40 years at least and has not been in the market for some time A John belter or J.W. Scrolls, foliate and floral on the triple serpentine crest-rail, with a highly carved serpentine seat-rail,full covered arms with carved arm supports, demi-cabriole styled legs with the original casters intact on the front feet we believe this sofa to also have its rich original finish. This fine sofa measures a total length of 82 inches. Height from the floor to the highest portion of the back measures 44 inches, seat length measures 60 inches, seat depth of 21 inches and seat height to the floor measures 16 inches and this sofa weighs approximately 95 lbs. Incised carvings, fancy carved crest at the center, carved draped scrolls, ring turned front legs and tapered back legs with casters intact on all four feet. This sofa/ settee measures 44 3/4 inches in height from the floor to the top of the carved crest at the back. A total length of 69 inches, seat width of 56 inches, seat depth of 20 inches and seat height of 18 inches and this settee/ sofa weighs approximately 85 lbs. May be original upholstery.very pretty with touches of silvery blue on salmon pink damask lilies pattern. The back side upholstery is faded from sitting in sunny room.please see photos of back. Very tiny stain on front seat area near edge.might come out.we leave all changes to buyer. This item is one family owned from antebellum home in NC. The wood is in very nice condition with normal wear. There is one stress crack in lower banding on the rear side at bottom that does not effect use.you can view in the close up photo. Extraordinary Victorian Renaissance Revival Sofa & Armchair
Offered for auction is this exceptional sofa and armchair. These two pieces are in the American Renaissance Revival style. They are solid black walnut with multiple walnut burl panels. These pieces are from my personal collection and I didn't have to part with them I would not be. Pieces of this quality and condition are very difficult to find. I do not know the maker of this set. But the quality and heft is on par with John Jeliff's work. A very heavy and solid set with excellent carvings. I prefer the"pure" architectural styled Renaissance Revival pieces to those with the carved heads, etc. but that's just my preference. The back top of the sofa has an upholstered bumper to protect walls in case the set was placed against a wall- a nice and interesting original touch. The backs and side of both pieces are elaborately ... moretufted, this treatment was taken from the old upholstery which may have been an earlier replacement, but was period appropriate. There is one very small piece of wood missing on one of the medallions on the armchair, the medallion is intact, just the very tip is gone. This appears to have been gone for many years and is not a recent loss. The set has been professionally reupholstered a couple of years ago in a brown and black fabric with fern sprays. From a distance it resembles the look of horsehair. Which may have been the original upholstery. The original finish was not redone when the set was reupholstered, only cleaned and re-waxed. I do not like to refinish pieces unless there is no alternative. Very sturdy, no breaks or weakness to the frames. Original metal caster except for those on the front legs of the armchair which were missing, but replaced when the set was reupholstered. From a non-smoking home. The sofa and chair were acquired separately. When I found the sofa many years ago the dealer had sold off the set of two armchairs that went with it(don't ask why) I searched for many years to locate one matching armchair, but could never find another matching piece

Wonderful renaissance revival settee from the 1850s or 1860s. What a lovely piece; she's in very good condition. This is techically pre"Eastlake" And likely from before the Civil War.
