SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sofa is a n original ca. 1840 American Empire style built from solid Santo Domingo mah ogany moldings with cherry and white pine secondary woods and exquisitely veneered surfaces of bookmatched Santo Domingo crotc h veneer with whole crot ch veneer on lyre faces of arms. The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. A beautiful American Empire sofa/settee. Amazing carved mahogany details with olive green mohair upholstery. Measures approximately 64 inches long x 24 inches deep x 34 1/2 inches tall at the back. The round fluted crest rail has downturned curved ends on either side with acanthus leaf carvings above a smooth curved back. The front of the arms have carved cherries. Pears, oak leaves, acanthus leaves, and nuts framed by a cartouche of C scrolls. Feather design carving on legs with paw feet. Possibly made in New York. There is overall fading on the upholstery along with a worn spot on the back, a tear on the side, and the trim is loose in one section(see photos) Appraised at 2,300. SALE Classic American Empire Sofa in the Classical Style Made in New York 1825-1935 I can no longer keep this beautiful sofa which I have owned for 25 years. It was purchased from a friend of mine. An antique dealer, who inherited it from his family. I fell in love with the lines of this piece so I put together pennies and beat a New York antique dealer to it by half an hour. I thought I would never sell it but I am downsizing. I simply have too much stuff and this is a showpiece that should not be buried among other pieces of furniture. It really it best served as a centerpiece of a room. It is a work of art and a piece of sculpture. The earliest of these pieces made before 1925 were more English in look and more decorative with gold touches. This piece is in between the more gaudy English pieces and the later American pieces which were ... moresomewhat clunky. It is in very good condition. With beautiful antique mahogany wood that makes it look quite grand. At this time it is covered in a white subtle satin and silk(polyester of the highest quality) I tried silk but it was a nightmare- can't clean it, spots so easily, is very delicate and easily rips, The new polyester which looks and feels just like silk(you cannot tell the difference)can be easily cleaned. In fact I have a special super cleaner which I have used on it and my other valuable antiques which takes dirt right off, even wine stains! I will send the new owner the name of the product. There is a small piece missing on the bottom frame which we have in our overstuffed house and are now making a concerted search to find. If it is not found we have a person who can make an exact duplicate. However. I believe we will find it. There is also a repair(about three inches long) on the bottom side of the cushion. It is not visible with the cushion in place because the the top side of the cushion is in very good condition. They were both reactions to the spirit of individualism and democracy which had taken over most of the Western world at that time. Women threw off the constraints of heavy corsets and layers of undergarments to wear simple beautiful dresses that tied under the bust and flowed down. The simple life was portrayed as the way to happiness and people's philosophy of life was respected in all areas of society. The middle class was flourishing and furniture took on a more classical simple style away from the heavier ornately carved style of Louis XVI. Empire furniture used the Greeks as inspiration and Grecian type tunics and gowns appeared on young women. The furniture in America was made later than the European Empire style which was more ornate and used lots of gilt. American Empire style was quite beautiful. This is a lovely 86" empire style sofa in excellent. Clean and offensive odor-free condition having most recently been reupholstered in the mid 1980s with lovely cream-on-cream brocade. The sofa has been in a pet-free and smoke-free environments for at least the last couple of generations. There are no stains or tears on the fabric and the wood is in excellent condition. Evidently there was originally a decorative molding in the center of the back, but the to insertions holes wer, long ago, filled with matching mahogany plugs. The legs do have holes into which casters can be placed if so desired. This item is available only for pick-up in a residential area of Pittsburgh. It has recently been upholstered and the upholstery is in excellent condition. There are no bolster pillows unfortunately, and the padding on the seat is rather sparse. It should have had another two or three inches of padding built up on the seat when it was re-upholstered. It would be nice with one long cushion in our opinion. It was made so that all the pieces can come out for simple re-upholstery and it is extremely solid. Made of Mahogany. And perhaps from its 1820s-1830s origins. Excellent example of American Empire style. Details include cornucopias, paw feet, reeding, and carved crest rail. Original finish, excellent condition, covered in green Napoleonic Bee fabric, not overstuffed. Will need to be re-upholstered. See complete description and details below. Background History: This sofa is an early 19 th Century Sofa. Purchased in 1974 from the sale of the contents of the Stephen Upson House(a.k.a. the Franklin-Upson House) at 1022 Prince Avenue, Athens, Georgia. In 1974 the Upson House was sold for rehabilitation as a bank and the family contents were sold by Elliott Antiques, of Atlanta. How long the sofa ... morehad been in the Upson House is not known. It may have been there when the Upsons purchased the 1847 house in 1885, or it may have come with the Upsons from their earlier residences in Georgia. The sofa was purchased by the current owner from Jim Elliott at that estate sale. There is a poor quality photo taken in the Upson House parlor at the time of the sale. There was no published sales catalog. The sofa was then placed in a 1830s house in Oxford. Georgia, built by Rev. Edward Lloyd Thomas(who died in Athens, Georgia in the early 1850s) In restoring the house, the owners wanted a fine period sofa for the parlor. The parlor of the Thomas-Stone House in Oxford. Georgia, had feather-grained paneled wainscoting, plaster molding and a center plaster medallion. The sofa remained in this house until it was sold in 1995. At that time it moved with the owners to a new residence. The last photo included here shows the sofa in the parlor in the restored Thomas-Stone House in Oxford, GA in 1981. Powerful acanthus leaf carved legs and gadrooned trim Circa 1830's.This Empire sofa is quality made and we believe it to have been crafted in Philadelphia by one of the famous makers of the era and is in fabulous antique condition.This 19th century sofa is very solid, tight and very well made and has its brass casters on all four feet. The vintage fabric is in very nice condition with only some mild picking on the seat area. There is a very small spot of veneer loss on the seat rail which I have shown a close-up picture of and definitely not a distraction from this fabulous sofa and very common in these early Empire pieces. YOU ARE BIDDING ON A LARGE BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE AMERICAN MAHOGANY EMPIRE& OR FEDERAL PERIOD HEAVILY CARVED CLAW FOOT SOFA WITH GREAT HEIGHT FROM THE FLOOR. THIS SOFA WILL NEED REUPHOLSTERED AND REFINISHED. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH SOMEONE MAY HAVE STARTED TO REFINISH THIS SOFA AND DECIDED NOT TO FINISH THE JOB. IT IS VERY SOUND STRUCTURALLY. IT HAS 3 OF THE ORIGINAL PERIOD BRASS WHEELS AND ONE REPLACED WHEEL IN PORCELAIN. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE PHILADELPHIA OR BALTIMORE MADE. I ALSO BELIEVE THIS TO BE FIRST PERIOD EMPIRE BUT MAY BE SECOND PERIOD(not 100% sure) ONE OF MY PICTURES SHOWS A SCRATCH I MADE WITH MY FINGERNAIL TO DEMONSTRATE THE AMOUNT OF OXIDATION ON THE LARGE PINE OR POPLAR BACKBOARD. New. Deep cranberry red"Napoleon Bee" damask fabric with brass decorative nail-head trim adds a rich and regal look to this gorgeous sofa. A flamed mahogany full roll crest adorns the back of this sofa which features high roll arms and a rounded seat-rail that rests on four hairy paw feet. The front legs each have a beautiful carved Eagle head and winged returns with the Eagles facing each other. This Empire sofa is quality made and we believe it to have been crafted by one of the highest quality furniture makers of the era and is in fabulous antique condition.This 19th century sofa is very solid, tight and ... morevery well made and has its casters on all four feet.
