The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. for sale a wonderful period piece. this is an antique mahogany slipper sofa or bustle bench some are called. it is very nice condition. It has new fabric which cost about 500 to put on. the back is tufted. it has great form and beauty. the front of the sofa is 42 inches at the widest part of the outside of the feet. it is 47 inches wide at the top at the widest portion of the part of the back that flares out. it is 32 inches tall at the tallest point and 26.5 inches tall in the middle. the seat is app. 17 inches deep. it sits 15 inches from the floor. it is very cozy and comfortable. it is in great antique condition. there are a few minor veneer chips, but no loose veneers. the finish is wonderful. i just cleaned it with liquid gold so it may look a bit shinny. i started to take pictures in my house, but it was dark where i had it, so i moved ... moreit outside for better lighting. it is solid and sturdy. it may be picked up at my home or shipped at buyer's expense. good luck. ps. i am starting it for a lot less than i have in it. i did not realize how much it was going to cost to recover it.

Hello! I have a really pretty Antique Empire sofa for sale! From my research. I think this sofa dates between 1840-1860. It measures 80 in. Long, 22 in. Wide, and 36 in. Tall. As per previous owner, the sofa originally came from savannah georgia. The sofa still retains its original horse hair stuffing which is covered in a navy blue material. As you can tell the sofa is missing some veneer and ornamental applique pieces. I originally bought this sofa for a winter project, but found another sofa that I liked better. In very good clean condition, the rich burgundy upholstery is excellent condition with no wear, it has never been exposed to smoke or pets. All 4 feet are carved lion paws, there is minor damage on the left front paw, otherwise the Settee is in wonderful condition for its age. The back side of the sofa that goes up against the wall is solid mahogany and is not upholstered. A beautiful American Empire sofa/settee. Amazing carved mahogany details with olive green mohair upholstery. Measures approximately 64 inches long x 24 inches deep x 34 1/2 inches tall at the back. The round fluted crest rail has downturned curved ends on either side with acanthus leaf carvings above a smooth curved back. The front of the arms have carved cherries. Pears, oak leaves, acanthus leaves, and nuts framed by a cartouche of C scrolls. Feather design carving on legs with paw feet. Possibly made in New York. There is overall fading on the upholstery along with a worn spot on the back, a tear on the side, and the trim is loose in one section(see photos) Appraised at 2,300. This settee has been well cared for and will provide many years of enjoyment for the new owner.

This is a structurally sound beautiful sofa or loveseat believed to be black walnut and burl walnut applied carvings 1820s to 1860s time periods. From the Civil War era. This sofa is what they call“transitional, which is when the style changed from empire from the 1830's to 1860's, into what became known as the Renaissance or Victorian era. A very neat and unusual eagle carved sofa. The stiles terminate in nicely carved eagle heads. Sits on castors. Paw feet front with nicely turned legs to the rear. The arms show heavily carved acanthus leaves and raised type rosettes. Has good green crushed velvet type fabric which is good condition with matching bolsters. A very unique piece overall. SALE Classic American Empire Sofa in the Classical Style Made in New York 1825-1935 I can no longer keep this beautiful sofa which I have owned for 25 years. It was purchased from a friend of mine. An antique dealer, who inherited it from his family. I fell in love with the lines of this piece so I put together pennies and beat a New York antique dealer to it by half an hour. I thought I would never sell it but I am downsizing. I simply have too much stuff and this is a showpiece that should not be buried among other pieces of furniture. It really it best served as a centerpiece of a room. It is a work of art and a piece of sculpture. The earliest of these pieces made before 1925 were more English in look and more decorative with gold touches. This piece is in between the more gaudy English pieces and the later American pieces which were ... moresomewhat clunky. It is in very good condition. With beautiful antique mahogany wood that makes it look quite grand. At this time it is covered in a white subtle satin and silk(polyester of the highest quality) I tried silk but it was a nightmare- can't clean it, spots so easily, is very delicate and easily rips, The new polyester which looks and feels just like silk(you cannot tell the difference)can be easily cleaned. In fact I have a special super cleaner which I have used on it and my other valuable antiques which takes dirt right off, even wine stains! I will send the new owner the name of the product. There is a small piece missing on the bottom frame which we have in our overstuffed house and are now making a concerted search to find. If it is not found we have a person who can make an exact duplicate. However. I believe we will find it. There is also a repair(about three inches long) on the bottom side of the cushion. It is not visible with the cushion in place because the the top side of the cushion is in very good condition.
