Interior designer or anyone looking for an airy and classical form for their formal living room, this is a simply outstanding find. With quite fine form, the daybed lacks the bulky and overbearing appeal that too often is associated with works of the Late Classical and Empire periods. The thin scrolling profile is distinctly Neo-Grec in form, the arms in opposing S-scrolls flanking a large scrolling back rail. The loose upholstered cushion remains in good condition with just light staining and snags, as such giving it a certain vintage appeal that is attractive to some and unacceptable to others. It is deep and comfortably stuffed with down, giving it a lasting fullness throughout. The sofa rests over sabre legs over small ball feet. ... moreProbably crafted during the late 19th Century. The piece remains in excellent condition- notwithstanding the bit of looseness in the arms(and accompanying"crookedness" visible only from the side) this is an exceptional piece for anyone seeking a formal and classical solution to a living room or sunroom. Measurements: 79" long x 20 7/8" wide x 32 1/8" high to taller side; 21" high to top of the cushion Condition Report: Small stains and snags to upholstery. Oxidized scratches to the frame. As well as other scattered abrasions and dings throughout as expected with any antique. Light chipping to right leg; rear back leg has half of the ball foot chipped off. Old crack in back leg. The arms are a bit loose when lifted upward- they are very sturdy and strong and do not require restoration when it isn't being moved, but to lift upward from either side shows wiggle. We would recommend quickly re-gluing the joints eventually, but not worrisome as is; viewed from the side, you can see a slight crookedness to the arms, but this is not noticeable when looking at the sofa more generally. Ornate Antique 19th Century French Caned Louis VX Style Canape en Corbeille For your consideration is a stunning antique French Louis XV style canape en corbeille. The piece is masterfully carved and painted in green and an ivory color and wonderful parcel gilt. The crest rail features a laurel wreath extending outward from a central floral rocaille. The rail continues with more floral carved decoration all the way to the bottom and around the back and inside around the cusion. The back is caned with a single layer and the outside panels are double caned. All of the caning is in excellent condition. The bottom features an oak and acorn motif broken up by a carved and gilted ribbon and the top rocaille decorations of each leg. The rocailles above the legs are very well carved and they sit above the cabriolet legs with scroll feet. The canape ... morehas some minor loss of paint that is consistent with normal use over the past 125+ years. There is also shrinkage at the joints and small cracks in the unseen places like the back of a leg. The piece is structurally sound and nothing is loose. This deeply worn and patinated with traces of gilt over a green and cream ground, the chaise lounge exudes a provincial charm that can only be found from years of enjoyment and exposure. Crafted very clearly in the French Louis XV taste probably during the mid to late 19th Century, it remains in quite nice condition despite it's years. We would certainly change the upholstery, as the wing is a bit too discolored to be forgiven, but the down stuffed cushion remains very full and comfortable. If you like the upholstery, a small pillow could be used to hide the discoloration ... moreand the upholstery enjoyed in it's current condition until you find the ideal fabric for it. Finely carved throughout. The deeply channeled and molded frame is interwoven with naturalistic embellishments throughout; there is a strong acanthus presence throughout- in the carved hand holds, the turns of the molding and in the outflow of the crest and apron carvings. These two in particular, the crest and the apron, both are deeply and robustly carved in a most admirable way. The single warrior-medallion backs are each crested by two mutually facing perched birds. The armrests commence with open-mouthed gargoyle heads. Terminating in concentric ribbon-rolls. An authentic Early American maple wood Hired Mans or daybed made in the first quarter of the 19th century. This has finely turned tiger maple posts and rails with highly figured curly grain. The original rope seat support was upgraded to a very comfortable drop-in cushion built on a wood frame filled with springs. The cushion is covered in a soft mohair velvet and shows a little wear. The only upholstery work required on this is perhaps replacing the mohair to the fabric of your choice. This measures 72 inches wide. 26 inches deep and the back is 28 inches high. ORIGINAL 1860s FRENCH PARLOUR SEAT In need of re upholstering. Very rare find and will be a fabulous piece of furniture. Picked up from the Flaxley Abbey Estate in Gloucestershire. Oliver Messel famously worked on the reconstruction of the abbey interior from 1958-65. Famously referred to as the foremost& most sought after theatrical designer of the 20th Century. His artwork regularly sells in the thousands. This Mid 19th Century sofa formed part of the redesign by Messel. The work can be seen featured in the Country life magazine from 1972. CONDITION The sofa is in need of a complete re upholster but the frame is in amazing original condition with, we are informed by its previous owner. Its original paintwork! Very Fine American Classical Style Carved Antique Sofa Settee, 19th Century
EXQUISITE AMERICAN CLASSICAL STYLE MAHOGANY SOFA In the manner of Duncan Phyfe(New York. 1768-1854) 19th Century Item# 1402ZAZ25-Q A very fine example of pristine craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of intertwined cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. This motif captured the spirit of a period of peace and economic prosperity during which this sofa was crafted. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife- it was an expensive detail to have incorporated into a sofa, as any small mistake led to the costly disposal of countless hours of labor and a large plank of ... moregorgeous mahogany. The crest rail has a soft backward slope, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curvature of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. The legs are deeply molded in large tapering horns that simulate the trumpet form of the cornucopia. Each leg scrolling softly along the apron- it is worth noting that the back legs are likewise carved of identical quality to the front legs, despite the time consuming and expensive nature of this carving and their relatively low visibility. Each leg terminates in well formed Lion's Paw, these of outstanding quality with each toe and knuckle well defined and culminating in sharp claws at the front. 19th century parlor set. As you can see there is beautiful carving throughout. Still has original upholstery so slightly worn. There is some wear/damage to the right side inner armrest of the chair where it has been scratched by a cat. Photo 3) Also. The cushion that comes with the chair as well as one of the three couch cushions have bad zippers and need new foam.
