This is a structurally sound beautiful sofa or loveseat believed to be black walnut and burl walnut applied carvings 1820s to 1860s time periods. From the Civil War era. This sofa is what they call“transitional, which is when the style changed from empire from the 1830's to 1860's, into what became known as the Renaissance or Victorian era. "Green Velvet" Antique Victorian/Empire Loveseat
A very unusual settee or loveseat. This appears to be Victorian Empire with a dark red/black flame mahogany frame, likely late 1800s. Origins unknown. Loveseat is a simple, yet elegant piece of furniture with a floral motif on curved wings on each end of the back. Dimensions: 42" tall by 48" long. It has its ORIGINAL GREEN VELVET UPHOLSTERY with original tooled brass fabric nails and appears to be stuffed with horse hair or straw. The varnish on the wood is so old that it has a"reticulated" appearance- love it! The legs gently curve with"demi claw" feet that have three toes, more like a heron's feet than an eagle. This is a structurally sound beautiful sofa believed to be walnut and burl walnut applied carvings 1820s to 1860s time periods. This is a very comfortable sofa that I purchased about 25 years ago from an antique store in Westchester County. I had it reupholstered and it has been in a rarely used formal living room ever since. This is a lovely 86" empire style sofa in excellent. Clean and offensive odor-free condition having most recently been reupholstered in the mid 1980s with lovely cream-on-cream brocade. The sofa has been in a pet-free and smoke-free environments for at least the last couple of generations. There are no stains or tears on the fabric and the wood is in excellent condition. Evidently there was originally a decorative molding in the center of the back, but the to insertions holes wer, long ago, filled with matching mahogany plugs. The legs do have holes into which casters can be placed if so desired. This item is available only for pick-up in a residential area of Pittsburgh. Elegant carved side arms with leaves. Gorgeous feet! In very good condition. As you look at the sofa. The wood on the right arm has a split. There is a very little chipping of the veneer at the bottom. See photos. Antique Furniture Victorian Empire Walnut Civil War Sofas Couch 1800s
This sofa/ couch was made in the Civil War era. 1820-1860) It is 82" long and 39" high to the center at the back. This sofa is ornate with hand carved walnut wood about 2" thick in dark brown color of the grape and leaf patterns. The cushion is about 4" at highest point. 58" long without arm, and 20" deep. It is an original tanned upholstery with the small mauve flower pattern. It is decorated with some fabric buttons on the cushion. The cushion is very firm. There are 3 light water stains on the cushion sitting area as shown in the pictures. There is a small worn area on the fabric of the left arm. No major damage on the cushion. The cushion is 5" high from the floor. It has the brass rivets stitched along the cushion all the way around the front. The arm is 24 1/2" high from the floor. Each arm of ... morethe sofa has embossed hand crafted grape leaf design. There is a wooden surface damage on the top right arm. The stitching at the back along the left arm has come detached about 2" The legs are very stunning with the hand carvings on wood about 2 3/4" thick. The end of the legs have brass wheels about 1" diameter. There is a tear at the back on right foot area of the upholstery about 2" But it is not noticeable. The back felt cover is purple/ blue. It is faded. There are rusty nails holding back cover. That is partially torn off. The bottom of the couch covered with the fabric. It is old, has no tears. All the tears mentioned can be fixed. Up for auction is a fantastic late Empire trending into early Victorian high back and nicely carved walnut sofa. I literally bought this out of a barn about 35 years ago. Been sitting in the basement(it's really dry down there) ever since and I am getting ready to build a new house so it's just gotta find a new home. The sofa will obviously need to have the springs retied and the upholstery re-done. The wood is in surprisingly good condition as is most of the finish. I think that touch-up of the finish would do it some minor re-gluing. Front and rear feet both are claw shaped. Fancy, and in great shape. No additional charge for the dust or wood chips

Antique 1850 Late Empire Style transitioning into Victorian Era. Carved Walnut Sofa. During this time period the Empire and Victorian styles were overlapping. One style was coming in, the other going out. This created some unusual and beautiful pieces of history in limited quantities. This sofa is made of solid walnut with walnut burl veneer accents. It has the early, referred to"Hairy Claw" type front feet. The construction is sound. Still contains the original horse hair stuffing, which is in perfect condition. No popped springs. Is a very firm but comfortable sofa that measures 88" Long. It has the pull-out type pillows which rest under the arms. See photo's- some veneer needs gluing and some is missing. The missing toe just needs glued back in place. Everything about this piece is original. I have seen this sofa, completely ... morerestored, sell for over $5000.
