This item will NOT fit in a flat rate envelope. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth. Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The Herman Miller Furniture Company was devoted to manufacturing period reproduction furniture until pioneer industrial designer Gilbert Rohde walked into their Grand Rapids showroom in 1930. A devout modernist. Rohde convinced D.J. De Pree to focus on modern furniture throughout the 1930s, and to produce exclusively modern furniture by the time Rohde died in 1944. This exact reprint of the 1939 product catalog from the Herman Miller Archives is an historic document showing hundreds of Art Deco and other classic modern furniture designs. All by Rohde. His use of exotic veneers, tubular steel, bentwood, and plastics was innovative and important in the evolution of modernism. With an added price guide, this catalog will be an invaluable tool for the researcher, collector, dealer, and museum curator. Antique Roycroft Arts & Crafts Furniture in 1906
Catalog of Roycroft Furniture and other things” A facsimile reprint of the 1906 Roycroft Furniture catalog. Issued by Turn of the Century Editions in 1981. DISCUSSION: Roycroft furniture was not manufactured in large quantities. Nevertheless. It contributed significantly towards the growth of Arts and Crafts design in America. Furniture and other artifacts made by the Roycrofters at their community in East Aurora, New York, are easily identified by the incised orb and cross and/or“Roycroft” name. The 1906 catalog reprinted here depicts a substantial portion of the furniture designs produced under the forceful direction of Elbert Hubbard. ENGLISH VICTORIAN FURNITURE -MANY REVIVAL STYLES -Classic by Symonds & Whineray
Victorian Furniture” By R.W. Symonds& B.B. Whineray. Published in London by Country Life Ltd. in 1965. 2nd printing. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: It is not always appreciated that there were as many changes and trends in furniture design in the reign of Queen Victoria as there had been in those of the previous five sovereigns. Therefore. In the space of some 50,000 words, this book can attempt only a general survey of Victorian furniture and its use and place in the Victorian home. Discussion of any one aspect in great detail has not been possible; the Exhibitions, wood-working machinery, papier-mache and the Arts and Crafts Movement, to name but a few, are all subjects, closely connected with furniture, which have been or could have been expanded into works of their own. It is hoped, however, that enough has been ... moresaid on each subject to give a balanced picture of furniture throughout the Victorian era" Actually. B.B. Whineray protests too much. This is a well illustrated study of English Victorian era furniture which does a very good job exploring the development and influences of the styles, the methods and materials used, and the social context of the movement. Symonds, one of the leading authorities on English furniture, died during preparation of the book, and it was completed by Whineray, his assistant. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x11" 232 pages, color frontispiece and 281 black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some light wear and scuffs(please see the photos. American Philadelphia Empire Antique Furniture & Cabinetmakers Pennsylvania
Philadelphia Empire Furniture" By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published by the University Press of New England in 2006. DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style in private homes as well as public buildings. ... moreThe arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English. The designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. 1790-1840 FANCY AMERICAN FURNITURE, PAINTED CHAIRS, TEXTILES, CERAMICS, More!
American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation& the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered“Fancy” they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. Whether ... moreexperienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12.5” 267 pages, color and black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: There is a long. Warm gift inscription on the title page from the author. Minor wear. Spine label peeled a bit at the bottom, but otherwise clean and nice, with

Auction Catalog of Rare Antique American Furniture & Historrical Items. Colonial
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An auction catalogue for an auction which took place at Sotheby’s in New York. On 20 January, 2006. As the title says, the auction was for“Important Americana: Including Property from the Collection of Elisha Hanson to Benefit the National Gallery of Art. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. I have other, similar catalogs up now, so check that out too, and save on postage. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, and thanks for bidding!
