This is an amazing piece and although there are issues that I will explain, it is by far one of the most stunning Empire sofa you will come across. The level of the veneer work and carving is of the HIGHEST quality. This is an 1800's walnut veneered sofa with hand carved fruit and bird's feather feet with incredibly detailed claws. The entire top of the back is rolled veneer in excellent condition. The wood glows. This piece is a work of art! It would be the focal point of you living room or Victorian parlor. I was told this is a Philadelphia piece. Here is the opportunity to get an incredible high style Victorian sofa AND choose the fabric to match your decor. What is ... morethere can be used as a template by the reupholsterer to recover this piece. The fabric here is worn so it must be done. This sofa does not need to be refinished. The wood finish is gorgeous! There are some small chipped areas of the carved wood on the right side. A very old wood crack that is not open but could use some stiffening as long as it is in the hands of a good restorer and some small veneer chips. During the reupholstery process, when all of the fabric is off, all of this can easily be addressed by a restorer. This is common and almost all antique furniture has some issue to address once the fabric is off. When you are done. It would all be worth it. This is an heirloom sofa. The shape and style is SO high end that it borders on Victorian iconic! This could be a museum quality piece. You can see the hand carved feathers. Each claw has hand carved toenails! Even the back of the sofa is nicely carved and finished. Brass tacks follow all of the curves front and back. Is a French-inspired Neoclassical style of American furniture and decoration that takes its name and originates from the Empire style introduced during the First French Empire period under Napoleon's rule. It gained its greatest popularity in the U.S. after 1810. The most elaborate furniture in this style was made around 1815-1825, often incorporating columns with rope twist carvings, animal paw feet, anthemion, and acanthus-leaf ornamentation. THE LISTED MIRROR: This is a beautiful piece which has undergone a brand new mirror replacement. When received. The old mirrors were cleaned but were still found to be very"clouded" with age. Please note ... morethe first four photographs showing the new mirrors. Compare them to the last two photographs that show the original mirrors in poor condition. This piece has regained its elegance and is ready to grace any home. It measures 31 3/4" high by 16 1/16" wide by 2 1/2" wide, and weighs 10 pounds. CONDITION: As mentioned. The mirrors themselves are brand new and unused. The wood columns are in great shape, with only a couple of tiny marks. The one defect of notable mention are the two areas of chipped paint loss on the wood at the very bottom of the mirror framing. See photograph# 7} This area could easily be touched up. The back of the mirror shows great age. It was very carefully removed and reinstalled during the mirror replacement work. There is an old small sticker on the top of the back that apparently notes somebody's name. The first name looks to read"Priscilla" but the last name is illegible.
