This beautiful settee has great form and lovely lines. All the veneers are just beautiful as well as the solid wood and all matching. As antique Biedermeier commands. The settee has a sweeping back rest and ample seat for comfort. It measures 39 1/2 inch across backrest. And approximately an inch less for seat width, 35 7/8 inch from floor to top of backrest, and seat depth is total is 19 1/2 inches and 18 1/2 inches from floor to top of seat. The arms are all solid wood and have wood pegs for construction. The beautiful warm golden brown tones are all with their natural aged patina. The wood type I am not exactly sure of, due to the Biedermeiers were made of several different European woods, however they are GORGEOUS AND ALL ORIGINAL. Please email any questions. Happy to oblige. Gothic Revival Settee Circa 1830 to 1860
This item was appraised by a licensed appraiser. The following is the assessment provided by the appraiser: From experience and research I can tell you The settee is done in the Gothic Revival period style. The face on the back is a Greek Mythology figure and Nymph(young female) who the Sun God Apollo tried to take advantage of and when he did Acantha scratched his face. Apollo got angry and turned her into a thorny manly looking Acanthus plant. Greek and Roman Mythology are heavily used in art for over 2500 years and are the subject of many folklore tales. The settee was made during Gothic revival period 1830– 1860 and is beautifully upholstered to coordinate with the rich patina ware of the hand carved black walnut woods. The item was re upholstered approximately 5 years ago in a neutral. Beige fabric with a soft cotton velvety upholstery ... morefabric. The upholstery is in good condition. The insurance value of the piece is $4,500. The market value range starts at $2800.00. Item is being offered well below market value. This piece is 150+ years old, not a reproduction! I purchased this beautiful piece in 1990 when I owned an antiques and fine jewelry store. This piece was never part of my inventory. The sofa measures approximately 70" long X 30" deep. Ever since I purchased it, it has been in my personal collection. And, since I purchased it, I had it refinished and reupholstered twice. Internally, I had all the springs retied and all new inner padding replaced what was once horse hair. I keep the sofa in my office. The only reason I am selling it is because my office is packed with furniture and I need to free up some space. Circa 1860 Antique Victorian Hand Carved Re-upholstered Sofa
A very beautiful scalloped back 1860's Victorian sofa! The hand carved apron really sets this sofa off with pretty scrolls. Shells and feathers detailing. What an eye-catching design! There is a small piece of the wood missing from the apron and you can see this best in the fourth photo. The piece was reupholstered at some point in time with a cheery floral pattern. There is a small area of the fabric at the back top corner that has loose piping(please see the last photo) It could easily be glued down. There are white smudges on some of the wood trim.
