Here's an extremely rare and beautiful American Classical Empire Period Grecian Couch. Or recamier. This piece was most likely made in New York City around 1815- 1820. It has four big and boldly carved hairy paw feet(finished in the round) on casters, the front feet with with cornucopia and fruits and leaves, fine crotch mahogany throughout, gold gilt stenciling along the front bottom and along the back, the arms are also heavily and deeply carved with cornucopia and what looks like dogwood flowers(typical for NY furniture) and the back has rope twist carving with gilt anthemions and a big gilt accented roundel. Wow! This piece has it all! It's also much smaller than most recamiers, which makes it even more desirable and rare: it's only about 73" long, perfect for most living rooms, bedrooms and even apartments. Empire Couch - Family owned for 40+ Years
This Empire Couch has been owned by our family since the early 1960's. I has not been used to sit on but as a decorative piece in one of our bedrooms that was used entirely to house a collection of handmade dolls. We are as far as we know the 2nd family to own it since World War II. It is believed to be from the late 1890 to 1920 era. We have no real confirmation of this except for stories told by our great grand parents to our parents who are now all deceased. It is a very nice piece and we over the years considered recovering it but since it had a good general condition we did not. Local pickup only. Or have a service pick it up and ship to you. This sofa is ornate with hand carved walnut wood about 2" thick in dark brown color of the grape and leaf patterns. The cushion is about 4" at highest point. 58" long without arm, and 20" deep. It is an original tanned upholstery with the small mauve flower pattern. It is decorated with some fabric buttons on the cushion. The cushion is very firm. There are 3 light water stains on the cushion sitting area as shown in the pictures. There is a small worn area on the fabric of the left arm. No major damage on the cushion. The cushion is 5" high from the floor. It has the brass rivets stitched along the cushion all the way around the front. The arm is 24 1/2" high from the floor. The stitching at the back along the left arm has come detached about 2" The legs are very stunning with the hand carvings on wood about 2 3/4" thick. It is faded. There are rusty nails holding back cover. That is partially torn off. The bottom of the couch covered with the fabric. It is old, has no tears. All the tears mentioned can be fixed. Rare 1860's Large Empire Hotel couch over 7' long
Large and rare 1860's commercial couch from Abilene Kansas hotel. The couch is in great condition for being over150 years old. It has been professionally recovered with a crushed velvet in a sage green. It measure approx. 85 1/2" wide and 36 1/2" tall and 28" deep. Very unusual size for the time period. Antique American Empire Carved Mahogany 1800's Couch
This is a antique empire couch in mahogany and reupholstered with a cotton damask fabric. Overall in very good condition. However. Antiques are by their very nature imperfect with time and develop a patina of the wood that is desired. There are slight areas of marring to veneer. The carving on the front of arms in beautiful condition. The mahogany is gorgeous. Fabric is clean and not flawed. Very little wear to fabric. The arms are slightly loose and can be repaired. This is a gorgeous Empire Style sofa couch that is from circa 1850. As you probably know. The Empire style predates the Victorian era. So, this is one old sofa. In overall amazing shape, and recently recovered. Very comfortable to sit on. Does have some missing decorative wood work. But what sofa from circa 1850 doesn't? Any basic furniture restoration person can make a mold and recreate what's come off over time. Pictures detail what I am referring to. These minor inconsistencies do not detract from the overall beauty and functionality of this piece. This sofa would sit perfectly as is in any classy, elegant living room. When you take in the splendor of the while piece, you hardly notice the inconsistencies. One of the big expenses when buying one of these very old sofas is getting it recovered. 1850 Empire Transition into Victorian Era Carved Walnut Sofa Couch, All Original
Antique 1850 Late Empire Style transitioning into Victorian Era. Carved Walnut Sofa. During this time period the Empire and Victorian styles were overlapping. One style was coming in, the other going out. This created some unusual and beautiful pieces of history in limited quantities. This sofa is made of solid walnut with walnut burl veneer accents. It has the early, referred to"Hairy Claw" type front feet. The construction is sound. Still contains the original horse hair stuffing, which is in perfect condition. No popped springs. Is a very firm but comfortable sofa that measures 88" Long. It has the pull-out type pillows which rest under the arms. See photo's- some veneer needs gluing and some is missing.
