American Classical Empire Grecian Couch Recamier c.1820
Here's an extremely rare and beautiful American Classical Empire Period Grecian Couch. Or recamier. This piece was most likely made in New York City around 1815- 1820. It has four big and boldly carved hairy paw feet(finished in the round) on casters, the front feet with with cornucopia and fruits and leaves, fine crotch mahogany throughout, gold gilt stenciling along the front bottom and along the back, the arms are also heavily and deeply carved with cornucopia and what looks like dogwood flowers(typical for NY furniture) and the back has rope twist carving with gilt anthemions and a big gilt accented roundel. Wow! This piece has it all! It's also much smaller than most recamiers, which makes it even more desirable and rare: it's only about 73" long, perfect for most living rooms, bedrooms and even apartments. Reupholstered ... morein bright empire green fabric with gold medallions, matched gold gimp, and has two wonderful pillows(one round with a gilt metal center and gold greek key border tape, and one square with four big lovely tassels. This is a crown piece of American Classical furniture and was restored with much(way too much) care and effort. If you collect and love classical, empire, regency, federal furniture and interiors, this is a rare rare chance to add a once in a lifetime piece to your collection. One of the front feet is a replacement but was done by a master carver who used the other original foot as a model, so it's a perfect match and fit and you wouldn't know unless someone told you. Antique American Empire Classical Crotch Mahogany Sofa c1840~Magnificent
SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sofa is a n original ca. 1840 American Empire style built from solid Santo Domingo mah ogany moldings with cherry and white pine secondary woods and exquisitely veneered surfaces of bookmatched Santo Domingo crotc h veneer with whole crot ch veneer on lyre faces of arms. The base is constructed of half round and cove pattern all the way around front and sides. Very well formed and veneered. The double cyma-curved crestrail is classic American Empire. Significant positives about this piec e from the perspec tive of an antique f urniture restorer with over 30 years experience show that this piece stands out in at least 3 ways. The original veneering shows no sign of glue failure at all. It is amazin gly intact with very little damage. The finish appears to be original. In excellent condition, and finally, it appears ... moreto have been upholstered only twice- the second time ti me with s taples. Usually on a piece like this. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. for sale a wonderful period piece. this is an antique mahogany slipper sofa or bustle bench some are called. it is very nice condition. It has new fabric which cost about 500 to put on. the back is tufted. it has great form and beauty. the front of the sofa is 42 inches at the widest part of the outside of the feet. it is 47 inches wide at the top at the widest portion of the part of the back that flares out. it is 32 inches tall at the tallest point and 26.5 inches tall in the middle. the seat is app. 17 inches deep. it sits 15 inches from the floor. it is very cozy and comfortable. it is in great antique condition. there are a few minor veneer chips, but no loose veneers. the finish is wonderful. i just cleaned it with liquid gold so it may look a bit shinny. i started to take pictures in my house, but it was dark where i had it, so i moved ... moreit outside for better lighting. it is solid and sturdy. it may be picked up at my home or shipped at buyer's expense. good luck. ps. i am starting it for a lot less than i have in it. i did not realize how much it was going to cost to recover it.

Interior designer or anyone looking for an airy and classical form for their formal living room, this is a simply outstanding find. With quite fine form, the daybed lacks the bulky and overbearing appeal that too often is associated with works of the Late Classical and Empire periods. The thin scrolling profile is distinctly Neo-Grec in form, the arms in opposing S-scrolls flanking a large scrolling back rail. The loose upholstered cushion remains in good condition with just light staining and snags, as such giving it a certain vintage appeal that is attractive to some and unacceptable to others. It is deep and comfortably stuffed with down, giving it a lasting fullness throughout. The sofa rests over sabre legs over small ball feet. ... moreProbably crafted during the late 19th Century. The piece remains in excellent condition- notwithstanding the bit of looseness in the arms(and accompanying"crookedness" visible only from the side) this is an exceptional piece for anyone seeking a formal and classical solution to a living room or sunroom. Measurements: 79" long x 20 7/8" wide x 32 1/8" high to taller side; 21" high to top of the cushion Condition Report: Small stains and snags to upholstery. Oxidized scratches to the frame. As well as other scattered abrasions and dings throughout as expected with any antique. Light chipping to right leg; rear back leg has half of the ball foot chipped off. Old crack in back leg. The arms are a bit loose when lifted upward- they are very sturdy and strong and do not require restoration when it isn't being moved, but to lift upward from either side shows wiggle. We would recommend quickly re-gluing the joints eventually, but not worrisome as is; viewed from the side, you can see a slight crookedness to the arms, but this is not noticeable when looking at the sofa more generally. This is a solid mahogany federal- or regency-style early sofa with a detailed claw foot and carved legs that probably dates from the 1840s ... moreor‘50s era. With solid Mahogany construction. It was upholstered a long time ago in a dark cranberry fabric, that still looks to be tear-free and is probably very usable for most people. The springs are a bit used where they are starting to bounce back up after having been tied down. It has solid construction on the back plate with deep carved grooves in the center, which is very unusual. It has scrolled solid mahogany arms, coming down into a flame mahogany and satinwood banded frame box that follows the beautiful flame mahogany skirt. On the bottom it has an eagle head carved with a drape in its mouth, fruits and berries, and a big bold carved foot on the base. The back also has claw feet. The overall size is 96 inches long on the outside, and 6 feet long on the inside, 24 inches deep back to front, 39 inches high to the back, 33 inches high to the arm, and 18 inches high to the seat. Hello! I have a really pretty Antique Empire sofa for sale! From my research. I think this sofa dates between 1840-1860. It measures 80 in. Long, 22 in. Wide, and 36 in. Tall. As per previous owner, the sofa originally came from savannah georgia. The sofa still retains its original horse hair stuffing which is covered in a navy blue material. As you can tell the sofa is missing some veneer and ornamental applique pieces. I originally bought this sofa for a winter project, but found another sofa that I liked better. Beautiful Empire style couch and matching ottoman with walnut trim from the mid 19th century. Upholstery updated in 2006. This is a lovely piece which I would love to keep. But am downsizing and will no longer have room for it. The matching ottoman sets this piece apart from other similar couches. Dimensions: 6 ft 3 in wide. 2 ft deep. Couch has wheels. The left rear wheel came off(I have it) and probably would not be difficult to put back on. Since I've owned it I've had it resting on a small block of wood which has worked very well. Empire Couch - Family owned for 40+ Years
This Empire Couch has been owned by our family since the early 1960's. I has not been used to sit on but as a decorative piece in one of our bedrooms that was used entirely to house a collection of handmade dolls. We are as far as we know the 2nd family to own it since World War II. It is believed to be from the late 1890 to 1920 era. We have no real confirmation of this except for stories told by our great grand parents to our parents who are now all deceased. It is a very nice piece and we over the years considered recovering it but since it had a good general condition we did not. Local pickup only. Or have a service pick it up and ship to you. Offered here is a fine and rare American Empire Box Sofa. Made in Philadelphia, Pa. circa 1825-1830.This sofa has been attributed to the famous workshop of Anthony Quervelle, Philadelphia. Made with wonderful Flame Grained Mahogany with outstanding carving on Lion Paw feet. Shell on arm(which is signature of Philadelphia and Cornacopia's on back ends.A very solid substantial piece of functional art! Condition is outstanding. With only minor chipping to feet. The tufted fabric is a silver/grey color highlighted in blue and in very nice condition with no rips or tears. The frame is mahogany with rosettes on each side of the head. A dragooned edging runs around the entire lounge. Wonderful claw feet with leaf carvings support the lounge. Very solid and sturdy with. I believe, no apologies. A hard to find piece of Empire furniture, this is a masterpiece of workmanship and beauty and will add beauty and elegance to any home.
