Duncan Phyfe Sofa c late 1800's-gorgeous carved details SALE
Exquisite Piece Was my mom's. She purchased it as an antique about 50 years ago It was sent to a very very bad man to have upholstered. And he stripped the fabric off only(Montclair, NJ) and kept her deposit. Anyway this is the real deal in antique sofa's. It has original horsehair stitching. Springs were updated in the 60's I believe. The wood work is in good shape. Has some normal wear from age, it just needs some TLC. The sofa is 6 feet from arm to arm, exterior measurement(about a 5 ft inside) it stands 32 inches high and about 33 inches deep. Also the rear back right leg was repaired at the joint where it meets the frame by a professional recently. The springs were redone in the 60-70's I think when my mom bought it. She paid $1200 then. STUNNING CIRCA 1815 NEW YORK CITY CARVED MAHOGANY FEDERAL PERIOD SOFA ATTRIBUTED TO DUNCAN PHYFE-EXCEPTIONAL! With our utmost honors and pleasure we are honored to bring you this absolutely remarkable later Federal period circa 1815's New York City masterfully carved sofa attributed to Duncan Phyfe. Before we press on. This is an estate fresh piece that came directly out of multigenerational Manhattan apartment that has been passed from family member to family member from just about the time of New York City defining itself in the early 19th Century. It is a sad epoch to note the last of this family. This sofa was either made by the hands of Duncan Phyfe or one of his shop's very best workers. It is unquestionably his work and it is simply flattering to be in its presence and own just briefly. The sofa from top to bottom starts with ... morea finely formed mahogany and crotched mahogany back rail that terminates in acanthus carving and fabulously carved rosettes. It has feather carved scrolled arms of just fantastic proportions and scale. Of course, the show stopper is these breathtaking legs. These are hairy Griffin paw feet with detail right down to toe nails flowing from carved sunflowers, an urn with just a breathtaking array of a floral motifs emanating from it with satinwood inlaid capitals over them. The frame is in exceptional condition. No breaks or repairs-pure and still on its original caster wheels. If this is your tastes its the last word on the subject. This would be defined in either Wallace Nutting's Furniture Treasury of Israel Sacks New York Furniture as"the best" or"finest" depending on each's grading system. It measures 73" long overall, 25 1/2" wide(deep) has an 18" high seat, 30" high arms and a 33 1/2" tall back rail. Its seat size is 58" long and 22" deep. NEW YORK C. 1810-20 Exquisitely carved; In the manner of Duncan Phyfe(New York. 1768-1854) or a Contemporary of similar skill Item# 1402ZAZ25-Q This is one of the finest sofa's we've had the opportunity to carry. An absolutely marvelous example of craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of opposing cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife. The crest rail has a soft backward ... morecurvature, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curve of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. The legs terminate in well formed Lion Paw feet over a ball-bearing caster, this original on all feet and still functioning smoothly. Most importantly, the finish on the sofa is just outstanding- very early and quite possibly original, the grimy surface preserves a well patinated mahogany beneath the alligatored crackling of old shellac. Areas of high use and traffic have rubbed through this shellac and have a brilliant ruby glow to them, but much of the less trafficked areas on the sofa remain untouched and hazy. This is a beautiful piece! We used it in our formal living room for many years. Therefore. It was only sat on rarely! The upholstery was replaced about 14 years ago and is in very good condition. The fabric is off-white with contemporary swirls. The sofa fits in well with various decorating styles. We had a somewhat eclectic mix in our living room. With a mix of antiques, reproductions, and more contemporary items. It all worked together very well. We originally purchased this sofa for more than twice what it's listed for. We used it in an old Spanish-style house in Coral Gables. FL. It then moved with us to a splendid Tudor house in Boca Raton, FL. This is an antique Empire style sofa in excellent condition. It features Duncan Phyfe style legs and rolled arms. We believe the wood trim is cherry. The fabric is in excellent condition. The sofa has been reupholstered in a heavy cream colored material. But we do not know the fabric content. My mother in law purchased it from an estate in the early 80s.
