Being offered for sale is this beautiful Victorian Rosewood Triple Back Button& Tufted Sofa circa 1860.This 19th century sofa has all the charm and elegance one expects from the Victorian era and is executed in beautiful rich rosewood. This sofa features beautiful pierced carved crests on the triple back.Half covered arms with scroll carved arm supports that join to the long serpentine seat-rail with applied carvings at the center, demi-cabriole styled front legs and tapered back legs with triple back boasting of button& tufted fabric. This fine sofa measures 38 1/2 inches in height from the floor to the top of the center at the back. Total length arm to arm of 78 inches, with a seat width of 66 inches, seat depth front to back of 22 inches and seat height of 17 inches and this sofa weighs approximately 100 lbs. This sofa has older ... moregold velvet covering and it does show some wear and some spots on the seating area. The covering on the back has a small tear on one side about 3 inches long. There are some old veneer repairs to a couple of areas on the crest-rail which I have shown in the pictures. These are done nicely in my opinion and not noticeable unless close inspection. There is a small piece of the bottom edge trim missing on the seat rail bottom on the right side. This sofa has a elegant presence. Is solid and tight and would be a wonderful addition to your Victorian decor. With deep serpentine seat rail, Marvelous Arm Chair, four nicely executed Side Chairs, and a very impressive pair of opposing Meridiennes. Presented in professional restored condition this marvelous ensemble has been professionally upholstered using the buttoned& tufted fluted design in carnation pink. Our restorer uses a technique closely akin to French Polishing when refreshing the old finish. The Belter Henry Clay pattern chairs have a distinctive outline. Carved Parlor Set Rosewood, Marble, Vintage Victorian, Italian Made Three-Piece
Here we have an amazing vintage rosewood and marble three-piece parlor set. Without a doubt. This set is of high quality. The bases are handcarved Rosewood and a fine craftsmanship. They are very solid. The marble is Mark made in Italy, so I assume that means the entire set including the wood is made in Italy. I can't say for certain and I don't know for sure where the bases were made however you can tell they're very well-made. There's very few condition issues however there's some missing finish, more so on one of the end tables, but also a couple other locations on the other tables. It's not a lot of finish loss but it's worth mentioning. The marble loosely sits on top of the rosewood but the way he holds it perfectly and position. The marble was definitely made to fit the wooden basis. There's one small ... morechip in one of the end table tops. See photo. It appears that one of the tables has a slightly lighter color wood, but it's really not that noticeable. Someone may have added a second table, but definitely from the same manufacturer and same quality. Let me know if you like better photos or if you're interested in seeing them in person. There are carnations with open pierce carving on each individual hand-carved crest, hand-carved knuckles, rosewood frames, carved cabriole legs with flowers adorning the elbows of the legs, and a beautiful hand-carved center crest on the serpentine skirt, with applied carving all intact. Big old brass casters finish off the cabriole legs. The fabric is crushed velour in a nice teal green, and is in great condition. Thomas Chippendale was one such artisan as was Louis Comfort Tiffany a century and a half later. Another such name is that of John Henry Belter. A German immigrant to America whose extraordinary technical innovations and masterful artistry quite literally changed the face of furniture making during the mid-1800s. For almost 100 years after his death, any furniture of the period exhibiting an exuberance of carving or the styling of ... morethe Rococo Revival was dubbed"Belter" furniture. It wasn't until the 1960s that the true genius of John Henry Belter was finally realized, when experts began making important distinctions between the superior work of Belter and the lesser works of his competitors. Belter emigrated to America from Germany as a young man in 1833 and became a naturalized citizen by 1839. He was already an accomplished furniture maker when he arrived in New York having been apprenticed to a furniture maker in Stüttgart, Germany. Belter came to America with little more than talent and ambition and by 1844 he had used both to become a well-respected cabinetmaker, even showing his works at the prestigious New York Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. By 1854, he oversaw the building of his five-story factory in the heart of New York City. This beautiful sofa feautres a scolloped crest rail with open carved flowers and foliate~great detail. Something you don't see today. Also offered are carved arm supports and a shaped carved seat rail. The vintage fabric is a cream color and in I feel, great condition with no rip or tears, there are a few spots that will probably disappear with a light cleaning. The back is beautifully tufted as it would originally have been. This is a solid heavy sofa with its original finish. Decorative carvings have been place over the joints in the back for extra sturdiness. 1840-1860s Victorian Triple Crest Laminated Rosewood Sofa
1840-1860s Antique Victorian sofa. Ornately carved laminated rosewood frame with triple crest and tufted back. Sofa was re-upholstered some 30 years ago in a light blue silk brocade that now has some soils(see pic#9) which could be cleaned. Ribbing is loose. Two front legs have upside down violins carved on them! Also, one leg on the right back has an old repair(see pic#10) Back of sofa is in fine condition as is the seat. Dimensions: 81" in length by 40" tall(2 end crests) by 34" tall(middle crest) Seat is 19" wide and distance from floor to seat is 16. Owner just wants to see it go to a good home. $750 OBO. RARE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ROCOCO ROSEWOOD RECAMIER ATTR TO JOHN HENRY BELTER circa 1860 ESTATE FIND size: 40" wide x 36" high x 27" deep. Attributed to the best American cabinet maker of the period. Fine rosewood structure in a very pleasing velvet type fabric. Sits on 4 castors. Tiny loss to carvings. The legs show some restoration/repair. Really a pleasure to sit in. These typically sell for $6000 an up! Nice bargain here. John Henry Belter, original name Johann Heinrich Belter(born 1804. Hilter, near Osnabrück[Germany]died Oct. 15. 1863. New York, N.Y. U.S. cabinetmaker and designer known for his superb Victorian Rococo pieces. Belter served as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice in Württemberg(now in Germany) Where he was trained in the Black Forest tradition of rich carving so admired during the 19th century. Settling in ... morein 1833. He married and opened a fashionable shop on Broadway. Although he also worked in walnut and mahogany, his favourite material was(then popular in the United States) With which he experimented. In 1856 he received one of a total of four patents for his method of processing laminated rosewood in many layers to achieve thin panels that, once shaped in molds through steam heating, were finely carved. This rather personal Louis XV revival style, a somewhat heavy, florid Rococo called zweites Rokoko. Succeeded the uniquely Neoclassical and functional Biedermeier period created in his homeland(and the Empire style imported by Duncan Phyfe to New York) and reflected the more nostalgic tastes then evolving in Europe.
